Rodgers will have surgery
on his broken right collar-
bone. The rest of Rodgers
season is in jeopardy.

you for this moment?
A
A lot. A-Rod is my
boy, my brother. I love
him to death. Hes taught
me everything I know. So
its going to be fun, and it
will show on Sunday.
Q Aaron went through it
with Brett Favre. How
are you different not having
played to start your career?
A
A lot. Just watching
film from my first year,
even coming out of col-
lege, Ive seen such an
improvement in my game.
Im really happy with where
Im at. Theres a lot to
grow, and I want to be one
of the greatest to play this
game, but theres a lot of
growth to do. I think it was
a blessing in disguise to be
behind 12 for this long. Ive
been preparing every week
for three years now, so I
felt ready.

You played more than
all of the other quarter-
backs in the preseason. How
much has that helped you?
A A
A lot. Whenever you
get some playing
time it helps. The pre-
season, its always differ-
ent than the regular sea-
son, but its still playing.
This is learning through
the fire, as you could call
it, especially last game,
and sometimes youve
got to learn that way.

Id rather learn from

Other than obviously
getting the reps, Ive been
practicing. You prepare for
a reason for these situa-
tions, so when it happens,
its not (that) youre scram-
bling trying to find stuff.
You just stick on your same
schedule, now youre just
getting reps.
Q A handful of days ago,
this team was con-
sidered a legit Super Bowl
contender. Are you confident
you can keep this team in the
mix?
A
Yeah, our goals
havent changed and
they wont. Everything is
in front of us, and we can
still go to where we want to
go to and just everybody
loves 12, but our goals are
the same.
Q What does it mean to
have coach Mike Mc-
Carthy say youre his guy
rather than the team signing
a veteran?
A Yeah, it gives me a lot
of confidence, and Im
grateful for that to have a
coach and a team that be-
lieves in me. Im going to do
my best to make sure I go
out there and help them.
Q After 25 years with Brett
Favre and Aaron Rodg-
ers at quarterback, there are
a lot of fans who are writing
off the season. What do you
say to those people to win
them over?
I dont feel like we
have to win anybody
over. Opinions on the
outside dont matter, so
were not really worried
about that. Were here to
play football. Were here to
win games. Im sure their
opinion wont hurt us when
we step out on the field

out that outside noise?
A Obviously, you guys
do your job, but were
not 100 percent interested
in your guys opinion be-
cause we know what we
have to do on Sunday. So
the outside opinion, were
not worried about it. We
have to do what we do, and
thats win football games.
Thats what weve been do-
ing even when 12 was here.
The first thing we dont do
is go to social media and
see what you guys think.
Its just what we have to do
and get done on Sunday.
Q You got hit a lot on Sun-
day, including your last
snap of the game.
A
Yeah, its funny be-
cause my body hasnt
felt like this in a while, Ill
tell you that much. You
sort of got to adjust to it,
especially as a backup not
getting hit for a while. So to
get those first couple hits
was its not like refresh-
ing because nobody wants
to get hit but it sort of
wakes you up. Your body
is sort of back to, All right,
were playing football.

Sloppy Saints put in extra work after win

A victory normally earns
New Orleans Saints players
a day off the day after the
game.
Not this week.
Coach Sean Payton said
there was really nothing
normal about the Saints 52-
38 victory against Detroit
on Sunday, so no day off.
Payton saw enough imper-
fections in the performance
to bring the players in Mon-
day and review how the Li-
ons cut a 45-10 deficit in the
third quarter to a 45-38 mar-
gin in the fourth.
We have to understand
the situation, Payton said
Monday. When took our
largest lead it was still early
in the third quarter and
there was a lot of football
left.
In the NFL, in order for
a comeback from five touch-
downs to happen, there are
about eight things that have
to happen and four or five of
those things happened.
New Orleans spent its
team meeting Monday
morning reviewing those
things, including a 74-yard
punt return for a touchdown
by Jamal Agnew in the third
quarter. The Saints turned
the ball over three times in
the second half, and one of
Drew Brees two intercep-
tions was returned 2 yards
by AShawn Robinson for
a touchdown that pulled
Detroit within seven points
with nearly seven minutes
remaining.

Ingram II, the only blemish
on the Saints first 100-yard
performance by a run-
ning back this season. The
Saints hadnt turned the
ball over before Sunday.
We had a chance to do
something that no team in
the history of the NFL has
done and that is to not turn
the ball over in the first five
games of the season, Pay-

New Orleans also was
penalized 13 times for 118
yards.
Certainly the penalties
were problematic, Payton
said.
Its always easier to
have a critical eye on mis-
takes that need to be cor-
rected when the feedback
comes after a win.
Everything is better af-
ter a win, Robertson said.
Even when youre sore,
youre not as sore after a
win. Thats what a win will
do to you.
Despite the flaws in the
performance, the Saints (3-
2) are the only team in the
NFL to win three consecu-
tive games by at least two
touchdowns this season.
Theyll visit Green Bay on
Sunday.
Against Detroit, the de-
fense had five takeaways,
three of which were touch-
downs and a fourth that
led to a touchdown, and
sacked Matthew Stafford
five times.
Despite the offenses
three turnovers against
Detroit, New Orleans is
still plus-6 in turnovers
during its winning streak
has allowed just two sacks
while recording 13.
Its not just about get-
ting ball carrier down or
the quarterback down,
said linebacker Alex Oka-

t is at least reasonable to
ask if the NFL has reached a
turning point from which it
may never recover, at least
in terms of reclaiming its
heretofore unassailable perch as the
most popular entertainment vehicle
in America.
Please dont misunderstand, we
wont be holding any tag days for the
league soon. Sunday Night Foot-
ball has been the No. 1 rated show
on prime time TV for the past six
years running and will be again this
year, Sunday late-afternoon kicks
get even more viewers than the SNF
games and Super Bowl LII will abso-
lutely be the most-watched TV show
of the year again by a ridiculously
wide margin.
However, as I reported here in this
column just last week, those huge
ratings were down eight percent in
2016 over 2015, and are currently run-
ning about 10 percent below 2016s
ratings for this year.
Its a problem, but just the tip of
the iceberg-sized list of issues cur-
rently facing the game.

er Rankings on page 3.
Through just six
weeks of the season, only
the 49ers and Browns are
winless, and other than
the 5-1 Chiefs and Eagles,

the NFLs 28 other teams
are all within two games
of each other between 4-2 and 2-4.
Perhaps even more surprisingly,
24 of the NFLs 32 teams are within
one game of each other with either
two or three losses.
Competition thrives on the good
and the bad, and almost anything
becomes less fulfilling when every-
thing looks the same.
We have been asking the question
for decades whether the NFL has
achieved parity or mediocrity, and
there is no way this season to make
an argument for anything but medi-
ocrity.
Then we have a number of the
leagues players using the game to
the president and vice
president are staging
premeditated protests of
their own accusing the
protesting players of be-
ing unpatriotic for tak-
ing advantage of their
first amendment rights.
Stuck in the middle
ARKUSH
are tens of millions of
fans being cajoled by the
president to desert their
favorite sport over the actions of the
protesting players, while those pro-
testers and their teammates make
it a little easier each Sunday for the
fans to leave as the competition be-
comes less compelling.
This past Sunday we learned the
original protester, Colin Kaeper-
nick, has filed a collusion complaint
against the 32 team owners for deny-
ing him the right to work over his
personal convictions.
It is a case Kaepernick almost cer-
tainly cant win, but it is guaranteed
to further stain the game and draw
our attention away from the field,
and it is particularly unfortunate in
Americas favorite sport for his own
political gain.
As if all this wasnt enough, weve
also learned in the past week or so
that the executive director of the
NFL Players Association, DeMau-
rice Smith, and a small band of play-
ers representing just six of the 32
teams apparently completed a closed
door, under-the-table maneuver to
guarantee Smith another three years
leading an association which he has
failed miserably to lead until now.
Looming over all of the above, is
the ever-growing specter of chronic
traumatic encephalopathy, traumat-
ic brain injuries that make the game
more and more dangerous for the
players every time they take the field.
It is certainly not too late. The
game can be fixed, it can be made saf-
er and it can be saved. But will it be?
Unfortunately, those prospects are
dimming, as much like what seems
to be going on everywhere around
us these days, the folks in charge
seem more intent on bringing the
game down than they do on making
it great again.

circus for Rodgers weekly ses-
sion with reporters.
On Wednesday, the circus
came to Hundleys town.
Its crazy, Hundley said with
a smile. Well, hello, everybody.
Hundley will say hello to
about 78,000 people on Sunday,
when the Green Bay Packers
host the New Orleans Saints.
With Rodgers out with a broken
collarbone for perhaps the rest
of the season, Hundley will make
his first NFL start.
Theres a lot of stuff new,
Hundley said. You guys here
at my locker, meeting with Mike
(McCarthy) last night (for a
game-planning meeting). Its all
new. Im adjusting, just going
with it. My focus is just staying
focused, keep the main thing
the main thing, play football and
have fun.
Hundley didnt have too much
fun in Sundays 23-10 loss at Min-
nesota. Not only did Rodgers
season potentially end on the sec-
ond series, but Hundley watched
the starting offensive line drop
one by one. First, it was left guard
Lane Taylor. Then, it was right
tackle Bryan Bulaga. Finally, it
was left tackle David Bakhtiari.
An offensive line and a running
game are a young quarterbacks
best friend, but Hundley had nei-
ther as he played behind three
backup offensive linemen for
the final quarter. Hundley was
sacked four times and rarely had
time to survey the field.
Bakhtiari and Bulaga prac-
ticed on Wednesday, but their
status is very much in doubt.
Protection will be key for Hund-
ley against a defense thats one
of only two in the NFL to rank
in the top 10 in sacks per pass
attempt and interceptions per
pass attempt.
Whoevers in there is in

of our situation, Hundley said.
Its the next-man-up mental-
ity. Obviously, 12 goes down, I go
in. Somebody on the O-line goes
down, somebody else gets in. We
just have to do our job no matter

ways. Obviously, we have some
momentum. We like the direction
that we are going. We understand

it gives us a great chance to win.
