INTRODUCTION
A cigarette is a small cylinder of finely cut tobacco leaves rolled in thin paper
for smoking. The cigarette is ignited at one end and allowed to smoulder; its smoke
is inhaled from the other end, which is held in or to the mouth; in some cases, a cigarette
holder may be used, as well. Most modern manufactured cigarettes are filtered and also
include reconstituted tobacco and other additives
The term cigarette, as commonly used, refers to a tobacco cigarette, but can apply to
similar devices containing other substances, such as cloves or cannabis. A cigarette is
distinguished from a cigar by its smaller size, use of processed leaf, and paper wrapping,
which is normally white, though other colors and flavors are also available. Cigars are
typically composed entirely of whole-leaf tobacco.

Cigarettes carry serious health risks, which are more prevalent than with other
tobacco products. Nicotine, the primary psychoactive chemical in tobacco and therefore
cigarettes, is very addictive. About half of cigarette smokers die of tobacco-related
disease and lose on average 14 years of life. Cigarette use by pregnant women has also
been shown to cause birth defects, including low birth weight, fetal abnormalities, and
premature birth. Second-hand smoke from cigarettes has been shown to be injurious to
bystanders, which has led to legislation that has prohibited smoking in many workplaces
and public areas. Cigarettes produce an aerosol containing over 4,000 chemical
compounds, including nicotine, carbon monoxide, acrolein, and other harmful
substances. Over 50 of these are carcinogenic. Cigarettes are a frequent source of fires
leading to loss of lives in private homes, which prompted both the European Union and the
United States to ban cigarettes that are not fire-standard compliant from 2011 onwards.

8
Smoking restrictions
Many governments impose restrictions on smoking tobacco, especially in public areas. The primary
justification has been the negative health effects of second-hand smoke. Laws vary by country and
locality.Bhutan is currently the only country in the world to completely outlaw the cultivation, harvesting,
production, and sale of tobacco and tobacco products under thE Tobacco Control Act of Bhutan 2010. However,
small allowances for personal possession are permitted as long as the possessors can prove that they have paid
import duties. The Pitcairn Islands had previously banned the sale of cigarettes, but it now permits sales from a
government-run store. The Pacific island of Niue hopes to become the next country to prohibit the sale of
tobacco. Iceland is also proposing banning tobacco sales from shops, making it prescription-only and therefore
dispensable only in pharmacies on doctor's orders. New Zealand hopes to achieve being tobacco-free by 2025 and
Finland by 2040. Singapore and the Australian state of Tasmania have proposed a 'tobacco free millennium
generation initiative' by banning the sale of all tobacco products to anyone born in and after the year 2000. In
March 2012, Brazil became the world's first country to ban all flavored tobacco including menthols. It also banned
the majority of the estimated 600 additives used, permitting only eight. This regulation applies to domestic and
imported cigarettes. Tobacco manufacturers have 18 months to remove the noncompliant cigarettes, 24 months to
remove the other forms of noncompliant tobacco In some jurisdictions with strict sharia law, the public
consumption of cigarettes by Muslims during daylight hours of Ramadan is prohibited.

9
Smoking age

Beginning on April 1, 1998, the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to people under the state purchase age
has been prohibited by law in all 50 states of the United States. The purchasing age in the United States is 18 for 46
of the 50 states but 19 in Alabama, Alaska, New Jersey, Utah, and Nassau,Suffolk, and Onondaga Counties in
New York. The intended effect of this is to prevent older high school students from purchasing cigarettes for their
younger peers. Legislation was pending as of 2004 in some other states. In Massachusetts, parents and guardians
are allowed to give cigarettes to minors, but sales to minors are prohibited.

10
The Cigarette Manufacturing Process - Overview
Primary Stage
1. Reconstituted tobacco sheet and tobacco leaf go through the following processes:

Mixing and wetting

Blending
Cutting

2. Tobacco stem goes through the following processes:

Wetting
Crushing
Cutting
Drying

Secondary Stage
3. At this point the reconstituted tobacco sheet, the tobacco leaf, the tobacco stem, and rag from waste cigarettes
together go through the secondary process:

Mixing
Drying
Cooling

4. This produces CIGARETTE RAG which then goes through the following stages:

Cigarette making machines

Packing machines (Normally cartons of 200 in cases of 3-6,000)
Production account point (On pallets)
Registered store (Awaiting delivery)
Assembly (Orders made up)

Additional notes
Any damaged cigarettes are split and the tobacco (ie. rag from waste products) is returned to the process at point 3.

In Details :-
The Manufacturing
Process --

Growing the tobacco

1 Tobacco is initially grown in outdoor frames called seedbeds. In warm regions, the frames are covered
with mulch or a cotton top sheet; in cooler regions, glass or plastic shields are installed to protect the plants.
After 8-10 weeks, when the seedlings are almost 10 inches (25 cm) tall, they are transplanted to the fields.
Although transplanting machines are available, the vast majority of the world's tobacco plants are still
planted manually. As the plants grow, the heads are broken off by hand so the leaves will grow fuller, a
process called topping. The plants stay in the field 90-120 days before they are harvested.

Harvesting the tobacco

2 Tobacco plants are harvested by one of two methods, priming or stalk-cutting. In the priming method, the
leaves are gathered and brought to a curing bam as they ripen. In the stalk-cutting method, the entire plant
is cut and the plants are allowed to wilt in the field before being taken to the curing barn

Curing the leaf

3 Next, the leaves are carefully, gradually dried in a specially constructed barn by air curing, flue curing, or
fire curing. Air curing uses natural weather conditions to dry tobacco. Stalks are hung in a barn with
ventilators that can be opened and closed to control temperature and humidity. Artificial heat is used only
during cold or excessively humid weather. The stalks are hung for four to eight weeks.
4 flue curing is done in small, tightly constructed barns that are artificially heated. The heat comes from
flues (metal pipes) that are attached to furnaces. Open oil and gas burners are sometimes used, but this
method is problematic because smoke can-not come in direct contact with the tobacco. Flue curing takes
about four to six days.
5 Fire curing dries tobacco with low-burning wood fires whose smoke comes in direct contact with the
leaves, thus producing a smoky flavor and aroma. The tobacco is allowed to dry naturally in the barn for
three to five days before it is fire-dried for 3-40 days.

12
Moistening and stripping

6 Unless humid weather conditions eliminate the need, the brittle, cured tobacco leaves must be
conditioned in moistening chambers so they do not break when they are handled. After moistening, the
tobacco is stripped. During this process, the leaves are sprayed with additional moisture as a precaution
against cracking or breaking.

Sorting and auctioning

7 After the leaves are moistened and stripped, they are sorted into grades based on size, color, and quality,
and tied in bundles for shipment. The farmers then bring the tobacco to warehouses, where it is placed in
baskets, weighed, graded once again by a government inspector and, finally, auctioned to cigarette
manufacturers.

Conditioning, aging, and blending

8 After they have purchased and transported the material to their factories, manufacturers treat and age the
tobacco to enhance its flavor. First, the manufacturer redries the tobacco. This involves completely drying
the leaves by air and then adding a uniform amount of moisture. Packed into barrels called hogsheads, the
tobacco is then aged for one to three years, during which period it develops its flavor and aroma. After it is
aged, the tobacco leaves are again moistened and the stalks and other wastes removed. Leaves from
different types of tobacco are mixed to create a particular flavor.

Making the cigarettes

9 After blending, the tobacco leaves are pressed into cakes and mechanically shredded. Materials such as
fruit juices or menthol are added to give additional flavor. The final shredded tobacco is then dispersed
over a continuous roll of cigarette paper. A machine rolls the shredded tobacco into the paper and cuts it to
the desired length. A device then grabs each cigarette and fastens a filter in one end. Modern cigarette
machines can produce 25-30 cigarettes a second.

Packaging

10 The final stage of cigarette manufacture is packaging. The completed cigarettes are packed 20 to a
package. The hard or soft packs are mechanically sealed in cellophane and hand-placed in cartons.

13
The cigarette is the deadliest object in the history of human civilisation. It is also a defective product, a
financial burden on cash-strapped societies, an important source of political and scientific corruption, and a
cause of both global warming and global warming denial.

Tobacco manufacturers have a long history of promising to stop the production of cigarettes, should they
ever be proven harmful.

The most important reason to ban the sale of cigarettes, however, is that most smokers do not even like the
fact they smoke; cigarettes are not a recreational drug.

It is not in principle difficult to end the sale of cigarettes; most communitieseven small townscould do this
virtually overnight. We actually have more power than we realize to put an end this, the world's leading
cause of death and disease.

14
To Save Us..

Beginning of Electronic Cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes optimize everything about modern technology that is wonderful. They offer great
convenience, save their users a great deal of money, and they provide the same pleasure customers are used to with
traditional cigarettes - all without the burdens that come with smoke.

Would you believe that electronic cigarettes have actually been in existence since the 1960s.

The first known person on record to have the idea for an electronic smoking device was Herbert A. Gilbert. In
1963, he filed a patent for this type of product, being entirely ahead of his time in more ways than one. He was well
aware of the hazards of tobacco.

But sadly, an idea was simply not enough at that time. During this era, cigarettes were so common and so well
accepted in our society that using them in public places was entirely ordinary. At the office, in university
classrooms, airplanes, and just about everywhere, smoking was common, and was not considered healthy or
dangerous in any way.

There just was not a market for a healthier alternative to cigarettes, and the technology was also lacking.

15
16
Why E-Cigs?
Electronic cigarettes are the future of smoking! They give a smoker everything they could
want; the ability to have nicotine, in a manner nearly identical to smoking a cigarette, the freedom of
many modern conveniences, and most importantly, they contain no tobacco, produce no smoke, and
leave behind no tar!

They Are The Better Smoking Alternative

Instantly e-cigarettes became a force to be reckoned with when they hit the market, and the
tobacco industry stopped in its tracks. For the first time in history, a legitimate alternative to
tobacco emerged, and really resonated with smokers. They are better than tobacco, in practically
every single way because they have been designed to go beyond the st andard analog smoking
experience.
Smokers are continually switching to e -cigarettes at a very rapid rate, as more become aware of the
long-term dangers of smoking, and the very practical and very user -friendly option that lies in
electronic cigarettes. Why use a product loaded with carcinogens and health risks when you have the
option not to? The time for a true alternative has come!
Some of the many positive benefits that can be found with electronic cigarettes are:
No Tobacco
No Tar
No Smoke
No Ash
No Stained Teeth
No Odor
No Smokers Breath
No Restrictions on Where You Can Smoke

Be Through With Smoking Bans

For smokers everywhere, this is exactly what they have been wanting for years. Smokers are greatly
looked down upon, as nonsmokers generally do not want it near them. Smokers, therefore have very
few options as to where and when they can smoke.

More Affordable Than Traditional Cigarettes

In some places, such as New York City, cigarette prices can reach $15 per pack. E -cigs cost
approximately $2 to $3 to the equivalent of a traditional pack of cigarettes. When was the last time
you spent that little on a pack? The savings come out to as much as 75%, without the health risks
and all the inconveniences.

17
What's the Difference?

Smoke from a traditional cigarette emits over 4,000 chemicals when lit, including 43 known cancer-causing
(carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. A few of the ingredients that goes into the making of a regular
cigarettes:

Acetone - ingredient in nail polish remover

Methanol - used as rocket fuel
Naphthylamine - a carcinogen
Pyrene - a carcinogen
Naphthalene - moth repellent
Cadmium - used in batteries, a carcinogen
Carbon monoxide - poisonous gas
Vinyl Chloride - used in plastic materials
Cyanhydric acid - poisonous gas
Ammonia - industrial cleaner and detergent
Arsenic - lethal poison
Dibenzacridine - a carcinogen
Polonium 210 - a radioactive element
DDT - insecticide
Formaldehyde - embalming fluid

Electronic Cigarette :-

The electronic cigarette (or e-cig) is a device consisting of a battery and a heating element. When activated,
the heating element boils a small amount of liquid in the device, creating a vapor, which is then inhaled by the
user.

The liquid and vapor contain four main ingredients:

Nicotine
Propylene glycol
Vegetable glycerine
Flavoring

18
19
Top 15 Reasons to Switch to E-Cigarettes

1. No Ash. E-cigarettes work through heating a solution to turn it into vapor. Since this doesnt involve any
combustion, it doesnt produce any ash. When you switch, you can get rid of the stinking, ash-caked tray
overflowing with butts.

2. Considerably Fewer Chemicals. With electronic cigarettes, the thousands of chemicals you consume in
tobacco smoke (including hundreds of toxins and 70 which cause cancer) are reduced to a mere handful of
known and safe ones.

3. Save Money. A single e-cigarette cartridge contains the same amount of nicotine as around 20 cigarettes.
When you consider the fact that you can get five-packs of cartridges for the same price as two packs of
cigarettes (if you happen to live in one of the cheapest states for tobacco, that is), the cost-savings are
immediately clear. 100 cigarettes worth of nicotine for the price of 40? Yes please.

4. Plenty of Choice. E-cigarettes seem pretty futuristic, but you wont be throwing yourself into an androgynous
future with only one e-cig brand to choose from. There is as much variety in e-cigs as youll find in tobacco
cigarettes, with more companies sprouting up by the day.

5. Delicious Flavors and Lots of Them. One of the best things about e-cigarettes is that they can be flavored
much more easily than tobacco. You still get your nicotine, but you can enjoy it in strawberry, vanilla,
chocolate, coffee, even weirder blends like pina colada! You can explore a world of tastes, including some
modeled on classic tobacco cigs.

6. Choose Your Strength. Not all e-cigs contain the same amount of nicotine. In fact, you can usually get
different strengths depending on how much you need. So you can start on 18mg cartridges, and then as you get
used to it work down to 12mg, 6mg and eventually no nicotine at all if you like. You cant do that with
cigarettes without changing your brand or the taste!

7. Just Like Smoking. Electronic cigarettes are intended to replicate the sensation of smoking, and they
accomplish their goal very well. You get a cloud of smoke-like vapor, a realistic hit at the back of your throat
when you inhale, and even a glowing tip when you take a puff. Some e-cigs even have cigarette-like butts and
light up a realistic amber-red when you inhale.

8. Avoid Smoking Bans.Using an e-cigarette is vaping, not smoking. This means that (since theres no
combustion, just heating) they arent covered by the vast majority of smoking bans. In essence, you can use
them wherever you like.

20
9. Easy to Use.They may be modern technology, but theyre extremely simple to use. Most are two-piece models,
which simply require you to screw a cartridge end onto a battery attachment and start puffing. The batteries
usually activate automatically, creating vapor which comes out of the mouthpiece when you inhale.

10. No Fire Risk.If you fall asleep with a cigarette in your hand, it could spell disaster. A ruined home, torched
family memories and possibly worse. Fall asleep with an e-cig in your hand, and nothing. There is no fire
involved, so theres no danger.

11. No Smell. The smell of smoke is extremely off-putting to many people. Most smokers even dont like their
clothes reeking of pungent cigarettes. E-cigarettes smell only faintly, and thats just the flavoring. With
cigarettes, you smell like an ashtray caked in tar; with e-cigarettes, you smell faintly of chocolate, or grapes, or
any flavor you choose.

12. No Stained Teeth. The tar and excessive junk you pump into your body when you smoke a cigarette are
removed with e-cigarettes. Without the dirty chemicals, you wont stain your teeththat sickly yellow-brown.

13. No Second Hand Smoke. E-cigarettes are efficient when it comes to smoke. They dont pump anything out
from the tip (the side-stream you get with cigarettes), and since theyre much safer than smoking anyway,
they dont pose a risk to anybody close to you.

14. No Smokers Cough. Its actually the wide range of toxins present in cigarette smoke whichirritates the back
of the throat and causes a smokers cough. E-cigarettes dont have these toxins, so the cough will disappear!

15. No Cancer. There are 70 known carcinogens in tobacco smoke. In e-cigarettes, theres only nicotine,
propylene glycol (used in smoke machines) and food flavorings you can pick up from the grocery store. There
are trace amounts of carcinogens called nitrosamines, which are a consequence of extracting the nicotine from
tobacco. These are found in FDA-approved patches in similar quantities, and you get 1,400 times more of them
in tobacco cigarettes. E-cigarettes lower your risk of cancer exponentially.

21
How do E-Cigarettes Work?
There are three core components to an e-cigarette. The battery is ordinarily lithium ion, and is the longer
portion of the e-cigarette. There are two pieces in the screw-on cartridge, the atomizer and the e-liquid. An
atomizer is a complicated-sounding word that essentially means a miniscule heater, which functions to turn the
nicotine-containing liquid into a vapor. The process is relatively simple; the concentrated heat supplies the energy
to the liquid which allows the atoms to bond and turn into a smoke-like vapor. The battery drives the atomizer, and
it ordinarily activated when the user inhales on the mouthpiece of the e-cig.
The liquid is a mixture of a handful of ingredients. First, there is nicotine (which the Royal College of
Physicians in London referred to as a very safe drug), then propylene glycol (which is used in asthma
inhalers and theatrical smoke machines), water and some FDA-approved food flavorings. In short, things people
consume all the time.

22
E-Cigarettes Work

The cartridge holds the liquid. When the cartridge is inserted into the e-cig, the cartridge filler (polyester
soaked in e-liquid/juice) makes contact with the atomizers bridge. Using gravity and capillary action, juice is
absorbed via the atomizer bridge into the atomizers steel mesh reservoir where it sits. This is when user input is
required.

When the user inhales on the e-cig, this action pulls the liquid from the atomizers reservoir into the
ceramic atomizer pot. This liquid is then absorbed by the aromatic polyimide wick (which is situated inside the
ceramic pot). At the same time, the device is heating the coil around the wick and therefore heating the liquid until
it becomes a vapor. This vapor is drawn up through the e-cig and out of the mouthpiece.

If your e-cig has a manual switch and you pressed the switch to activate it, the atomizer will only vaporize
the liquid that is already in the ceramic pot. Without the users sucking action, no more liquid is drawn into the
pot or absorbed by the wick.

23
Construction:-

Let us have a look on the working of an e-cigarette. An electronic cigarette also known as an e-cigarette or
e-cig usually comprises of three parts. The larger portion is occupied by the battery which may be of two types. The
battery used in an e-cigarette is a proprietary battery which is all in one part. The charger is usually included in the
starter kit; you only need to screw the battery into the chare to charge it. An atomizer is the second part of an e-
cigarette having a little coil, and a small metal bridge made out of mesh. If we have a close view there, this whole
assembly is packed in a very small space and is used as the basic heating element.
The mesh is in the form of a little arch, therefore also known as the bridge, and the metal coil is attached
underneath this bridge. You cant see this metal coil as it is hidden by the arch; you need to take the bridge out in
order to see it. But it is not easy to do so, as the metal wire of the coil is spun into a spring which is attached on

24
both sides of the bridge. The third part of an e-cigarette is the cartridge inside which some sort of filling or stuffing
is done.

E-Cigarette filling, capping and testing solution (Genesis)

The Genesis is the worlds first solution for quickly and efficiently filling, capping and testing e-cigarettes.
The modular design of the machine means it can easily be adapted to future market changes in the e-cigarette
industry.

Filling
During the filling process, the e-liquid will be injected into the cartridge or disposable. The filling needles
will start filling at the start of the specific needle movement. When no product is available, for example
because it has been rejected during the pre-filling check, a valve will be switched mechanically which
returns the filling dose to the liquid reservoir. An integrated filling and rejection check can be selected.

Capping
Capping the product can be done with an innerseal and a mouthpiece. The seals will be supplied and
positioned by a bowl feeder in combination with a linear track. An integrated check and reject system will
perform a quality control.

Quality Check
After the filling and capping process, a quality inspection is performed. A smoke or resistance check can
be carried out to determine if the product meets the quality standards. A smoke check is established by

25
creating flow and using sensor technology. Depending on the required production layout, it is also
possible to carry out a resistance check earlier in the process. If the product does not pass the quality
check, it will be rejected automatically.

Labelling
In this process, a customized label is wrapped around the product at high speed. It is also possible to
feature the track & trace code on the label.

need to check them out.

V2 Cigs

V2 Cigs is one of the top e-cigarette options on the market right now. They are the largest online
retailer of electronic cigarettes and have a gigantic fanbase. This is because V2 combines a huge variety of products
with great performance. Their best product is their EX line of e-cigarettes, which are the undisputed top miniature,
pen-style e-cigarettes on the market. Check out our V2 Cigs Review to learn more about this brand!

Mig Cigs

Mig Cigs is the fastest growing e-cigarette brand right now. Their tank and battery setups are
powerful, and not sold anywhere else. For a power setup, go with the SR72 or the iStick 30Watt Kit. But maybe the
best thing about Mig Cigs is their MIG21, the BEST miniature e-cigarette on the planet. It can vape with the big
guys in both power and taste, yet it is the size of a traditional cigarette. It's revolutionary. They also recently
released a brand new line of gourmet e-liquid that we highly recommend trying.

28
Halo Cigs

Halo Cigs is an innovator in the industry. Halo offers very competitive and advanced e-cigarette hardware that both
new and experienced vapors will enjoy. We have reviewed their Triton Tank System, which we were very
impressed with (click below for details). They are also very well known for their wide selection of flavors, though
we thought V2 Cigs had a slight edge on them in that respect. Be sure to check out our Halo Cigs Review to learn
more about what is possible with the Triton Tank System.

Apollo E-Cigs

Apollo is a very good brand that we recommend particularly to more advanced e-cig users.
This is because they offer not only the typical e-cigarette model, but the eGo model as well. eGos are fantastic
batteries that connect to a wide range of tanks. You can fill these tanks with any brand of juice you can find,
which makes a more personalized and open source experience. Check out our Apollo E-Cig Review for more
information.

South Beach Smoke

South Beach Smoke has been around for a very long time. They haven't quite improved as much as
some other brands but they are still a solid choice for beginning e-cig users. If you are interested in a brand that has
a great selection of flavors and a solid history, than South Beach Smoke is definitely an option. For more
information, read our South Beach Smoke Review.

New developments :-

Technological developments
This is a rapidly developing field, and although this article has dealt predominantly with electronic
cigarettes, there are many other novel nicotine devices in development likely to come to market in the
relatively near future. British American Tobacco, for example, is bringing to market (via a wholly-owned
subsidiary company, Nicoventures), a novel cigalike device that is a nicotine metered dose inhaler, not an
electronic cigarette. Philip Morris has also invested in a patented novel nicotine device, and other tobacco
companies, the pharmaceutical industry and indeed electronic cigarette companies may elect to do the
same. It is therefore likely that over the near term future, in addition to improvements and developments in
the performance of electronic cigarette technology, novel devices that have similar or greater potential to
appeal to smokers, and offer significantly greater purity and efficacy, and a lower hazard profile, will
become available.

Licensing developments
It is now apparent that companies intending to market electronic cigarettes are now going to have
to meet either medicines or TPD regulations, and probably from 2017 at the latest. Until the current draft of
the TPD was circulated, applications to the MHRA in the public domain were few, but more manufacturers
may now be considering opting for the clarity, albeit at a cost, of medicines regulation rather than the
uncertainty and advertising restrictions of TPD regulation. The Nicoventures inhaler product is expected to
be licensed by the MHRA, and marketed in the UK, within the year, and the same company has also
applied for a medicines license for an electronic cigarette. Other tobacco companies may follow suit, while
pharmaceutical companies, concerned by the loss of over-the-counter sales of NRT to electronic cigarettes,
may also decide to enter this market. It is thus likely that by this time next year, health professionals will be
able to prescribe, and patients will be asking them for, prescriptions of novel nicotine products. Some of
those are likely to be produced by tobacco companies or wholly funded subsidiaries.

30
Summary and conclusions:-
Smoking kills, and millions of smokers alive today will die prematurely from their smoking unless they
quit. This burden falls predominantly on the most disadvantaged in society. Preventing this death and disability
requires measures that help as many of todays smokers to quit as possible.

The option of switching to electronic cigarettes as an alternative and much safer source of nicotine, as a
personal lifestyle choice rather than medical service, has enormous potential to reach smokers currently refractory
to existing approaches. The emergence of electronic cigarettes and the likely arrival of more effective nicotine-
containing devices currently in development provides a radical alternative to tobacco, and evidence to date suggests
that smokers are willing to use these products in substantial numbers. Electronic cigarettes, and other nicotine
devices, therefore offer vast potential health benefits, but maximising those benefits while minimising harms and
risks to society requires appropriate regulation, careful monitoring, and risk management.
