shows such as On the Buses and Coronation Street are shown.

NARRATOR
The television has proven to be a staple of our
society, since its establishment and growth in
popularity during the mid-20th century, the television
has had a dramatic impact on countless cultures
around the world and an undeniable influence on the
development of technology since its introduction.
Televising incredible historical events that moulded
our society.
Compilation of different TV dramas from old to modern is shown.
Television dramas have helped to define eras and set
trends throughout its development, but why have we
chosen to adopt television media into our lives? How
it is that television media has been able to so
effectively appeal to people all over the globe? And
what shows really brought TV dramas to the forefront?

NARRATOR
3 different extracts of dramas are shown and then an image of The
Archers is shown as it is mentioned.
Many of the dramas we know and love today begun on
the radio with shows such as the Archers, the worlds
longest running radio drama originally produced with
collaborative input from the ministry of agriculture
in order to disseminate information to farms to help
improve productivity.
A hand is shown turning on a radio.
The archers arguably defined the soap genre in the UK
and inspired many long running, hugely successful TV
shows such as Coronation Street.
Footage of Coronation Street is shown.
When it came to adapting Radio dramas for the TV.
A TV is shown being turned on.
It was evident that there was a market for the
format that the archers offered. Therefore heavily
popularising the format of soaps and inspiring the
likes of EastEnders and Coronation Street.

NARRATOR
A shop with many TVs lined up is shown.
As television made a revolutionary change from monochrome to
colour during the late 60s, arguably content also became
more colourful and wide spread.
Narration is played over an extract from On the buses.
The sudden surge in popularity and production of democratised
British TV comedies revitalised satiric content and brought
comedy to the forefront of British entertainment for ordinary
people.
Narration is played over content from On the Buses.
Shows like On the Buses and Till Death do Us Part conceivably
brought comedy to a larger audience and integrated the
representation of ordinary working people, differing from
earlier black and white comedies such as That was the week
that was that appealed more to the richer, highly educated
demographic.

NARRATOR
As the format of television dramas became increasingly
popular and marketable. Many more genres emerged to
appeal to a wider audience. Period dramas became
popularised during the 21st century with hugely
successful dramas like Downton Abbey.
INTERVIEWEE 2
Interviewee 2 answers question about Downton Abbey
<Interview extract>
NARRATOR
Period dramas offered the format a historic aesthetic
as well as a heavy investment in themes of romance
integrated into the narrative.
Footage of examples of period dramas (Downton Abbey/Victoria/Call
the midwife) shown with narrative playing over.
The main demographic that period dramas have shown to
appeal to are women from the ages of 17-75, the merging
of period dramas with modern day TV dramas is symbolic
of how TV has had to try and appeal to all audiences,
not just in terms of age however, but with Downton
Abbeys huge success in America, appealing to
international audiences as well.

Narration played over footage of Downton Abbey.

With the recent rise of on-demand TV, it has become
more difficult than ever to try and appeal to a wider
audience. On demand TV has come in direct competition
with television and TV broadcasters such as ITV, BBC
and Channel 4 have started to produce more dramas that
follow similar formats of popular on demand shows.
Narration played over footage of Black Mirror.
For example Black Mirror, originally a channel 4
series, was bought by Netflix, an on demand service.
Sci-fi, a genre that is currently making waves
throughout western pop culture, with Netflixs Stranger
things and Black Mirror. Sci-Fis main demographic
tends to be younger people, who tend to use on demand
services more than watching television.
Narration played over footage of Electric Dreams.
Channel 4 introduced a new show named electric dreams,
similar to the format of Black Mirror, this symbolises
how TV broadcasters are trying to appeal to younger
people and attract a younger demographic to their
content.
As on demand television provides a platform that allows
audiences to choose the content that they watch more
easily, will TV be able to appeal to younger people and
modern audiences in general? Will television continue
to be able to have the same effect on pop culture that
it has over the many years since its introduction?

Contingency Plan
Equipment
Camera
SD card
Tripod
Microphone

There are various items of apparatus I need to create my documentary, for example I need
my camera which is a Canon Legria HF R806. I need to make sure that I have enough space
on my SD card, so before I start filming I need to save any footage already on my SD onto my
computer so that I have enough room on the SD card for the footage I will need. I should
bring an SD card just in case I lose my original one.

I should make sure that any equipment I have such as my tripod is useable and I bring with
me when filming. I should make sure to arrange anything in my camera bag so that I
remember it, if I forget to bring my tripod to college I will try to borrow one for my filming.
In terms of my microphone and any other equipment that I might decide to use nearer the
time I should also make sure that I remember to put all of this equipment in my bag if I have
to do my filming in another area. I should also make sure that all my equipment works
before I start doing filming or recording narration.

I need to make sure that all my interviewees are free when I need them. Therefore I need to
make sure that I am punctual and that I follow my production schedule. However some of
my interviewees may be busy or have something suddenly come up, just in case this
happens I need to make sure to arrange other times to interview them just in case. I should
make sure that I also have asked other people to interview just in case anyone cancels.

When interviewing I should also make sure that I have the questions ready with me, it is
important that I make sure I am asking the right people the right questions as it is important
for the content of my documentary.

Locations/Sets/Props
When it comes to the locations and sets I am using. It is important to make sure that there
will be no issues with the location I am using, therefore I should make sure I am using a
room that I am permitted use. I should make sure my set is also presentable and appropriate
for an interview, for example, I should make sure that I have a room that has good natural
lighting. Therefore I should use a room with a large window in it. If there are any issues with
obtaining this kind of setting I will have to make sure I have some lighting to use just in case.
I should also make sure that the colours in the room are light and muted, to ensure the
background isnt too distracting. Preferably I will need to use a room with a white
background, but anything not too bright or dark and glum will suffice. If possible, using TV
show posters in my background will help to create a more effective mise-un-scene and also
make my setting more interesting.

I will not need to use many props in my production, however I may consider placing
different pieces of furniture/decorations around the interview settings. I should however
make sure its not too cluttered and if my room happens to be quite messy or disorganised I
need to ensure to create a suitable background and move any obstructions out of the way.
