From the Vicarage - Memories
One hundred years ago the war-to-end-wars proved to be anything but
and the twentieth century became the most costly of all in terms of lives
lost as a result of war.
Some people reading this will have fought and suffered in the second
World War, and may still be conscious of gaps that can never be filled, of
might have-beens that still haunt their lives. But most people alive today
can remember neither of the two world wars yet we have inherited the
world left by those wars, we hear of conflicts today many of which have
roots in the past, and we all have memories.
We cannot cut ourselves off from the past - either as individuals or as a
society. Part of what we are depends upon heredity and the influences of
early childhood. When psychiatrists try to heal the mind, they must probe
into the past. Societies are what they are because of what has
happened. It was John XXIII who really changed the image of Papacy in
the twentieth century, and with it, that of the Church which he
represented. Yet he once said, Do not be like those people who think
they are inaugurating a new era; as if before they came along, there had
been nothing but emptiness or chaos. Before we came, there were our
parents, and they were the latest links of a long and sacred chain. . . We
should still be very wretched indeed, and hardly out of the phase of
barbarism, if the civilisation of past centuries had not seen to our
baptism.
You can do two things with memories. You can live in the past, become
the prisoner of nostalgia. Turn up those parts of the Old Testament which
deal with the deliverance of Israel from Egypt, and you will see that once
things got difficult, the people looked back, and wished they were back.
They forgot the oppression of body and spirit which they had endured,
and thought only of the security.
Memory plays strange tricks. People talk about the Dunkirk spirit
forgetting what Dunkirk was really like. People think of the courage and
heroism that undoubtedly blossomed in time of war, and forget the black
market and the dodges and the lies that it engendered. Church people
look back on full churches, forgetting that they were full only on certain
occasions, and that some people were there only because it paid them to
be. We all tend to remember only what we want to remember - investing
the past with a rosy glow that it never had.
There is also that kind of remembering that lies at the heart of Christian
worship - and indeed of Jewish worship as well. When Jews celebrate
the great events of their history like the deliverance from Egypt, it is to
affirm that God is still like that, a delivering-out-of-Egypt-sort-of-God.
3
When Christians celebrate the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus, it is
not in order to escape from the realities of this world into one that seems
less complicated. It is to affirm that the God who did these things is doing
them now - still identified with us, still suffering for us, still triumphant
over that suffering. We look back to the past, we trace the story of Gods
dealings with his people in order to know how he is dealing with us now.
History has been called Gods roaring loom; we would be foolish if we
tried to find in it too neat a pattern with no raw edges, but we would be
blind if we did not see in it the activity of God who is forever visiting and
redeeming his people.
God, at heart, is longing for peace in the world, and the question why he
doesnt produce peace out of a hat must depend on the sort of
constraints that his love and desire for peace are under. Traditionally,
these constraints have been under stood as something to do with his
desire to give us autonomy, free will; the desire to allow us to grow up
and to make mistakes. But within these constraints he longs for peace
from us and for us.
The best image of the limitations of God that I know is in Christ himself.
Christ intervened - or intervenes - and when he most vividly intervened
he did so as a human being. If we look at Christ, the constraints that we
see are the inevitability of suffering, because love involves suffering, and
that if were going to have a world where we have the power to love we
also have the power to hate. And thats the world in which we actually
live. We havent got a perfect world; we havent got a paradise; weve got
a mixture, and that is itself a wonderful thing because it means we have
the ability to believe: were not constrained to believe, and we also have
the ability to be self-sacrificial.
Try to apply this to your own memories. Some bring pain, some pleasure,
but most a mixture of the two. Through them God speaks to you, and
tells you that just as he led you to know love or to endure suffering, so he
will now. For he is the same God. Therefore use memory - not as a
retreat from life, not as a false yardstick with which to compare present
ills, but as a source of power. The God whom we worship is a delivering
God. There is still a promised land for ourselves as individuals, and for
the world society to which we belong. What he asks is the love and
obedience that will enable him to lead us to it.
David Cleeves

Hosting With Host Uk 2017

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some
have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews 13:2
How true such advice can be. Hospitality is an equal partnership, the
feel-good factor of offering it and the delight in receiving it.
HOST UK is a charity whose mission is to give a welcome to
international students in British homes for friendship and cultural
exchange. Whilst not a faith-based charity, it values the offers of
hospitality that result from awareness-raising in Churches through parish
news and word of mouth.
If you are unable to travel abroad, have abroad come to you! Our
students are both curious and fascinated by our traditions and happy to
fully participate in everyday life. If you have a curiosity about exotic
5
places, or desire to improve a second language, or want your children to
encounter those of other cultures and countries, we can offer all of this.
Our international students bring something really special to such a visit
and experiences become treasured memories for all and forever.
Whilst we operate all year round Christmas or New Year is an especially
valuable time to enjoy welcoming guests into your home.
Consider what faces the international student this Christmas; a lonely
hall of residence compounded with the uncertainty of their welcome from
a Brexiting Britain. They may also be from a country experiencing conflict
or natural disaster and if none of this applies, then they are invariably far
from home, family and loved ones.
Hospitality can be offered for one day (daytime only), three days and two
nights at the weekend, or at New Year, or four days and three nights
during the Christmas festive period.
The choice is yours. And remember...your offer can be made at any time
of the year.
If you should like to know more please look at our website: www.host.org
Or email us on: info@hostuk.org Or telephone us on: 020 7739 6292

Save Our Masham Swifts

Swifts are amazing birds; they spend almost all their lives in the air; they
eat, drink, sleep and mate on the wing, only coming down to land to
breed. They travel thousands of miles a year, returning to their nesting
sites in Europe from Southern Africa. They are faithful to their old nesting
sites, returning each year to exactly the same nest. They like old, high
buildings, making their nests in small holes in eaves, gables or upper
walls. There have been swifts in Masham for hundreds of years, arriving
in early May, and filling our sky with exciting calls and stunning aerobatic
flight. Yet like many other places, their numbers here are declining fast:
instead of hundreds, last year there were only twenty or thirty pairs. One
of the main reasons for this is that old buildings are being renovated, and
new buildings do not provide space for them. When swifts return they
find themselves excluded. We can create nesting sites for them quite
easily, by putting up boxes, or by providing access to internal spaces.
Come to a meeting on Friday 10 th November in the Town Hall at 7.00
pm for a glass of wine.Talk at 7.30 pm by Tanya and Edmund Hoare,
to learn more about how we can save our swifts.

Masham Allotment Association Centenary Celebration (1917 - 2017)
This summer the Masham Allotment Association celebrated its
Centenary by holding a BBQ on the Hope Garden. It was a lovely day
and everyone who attended enjoyed an overflowing table of good food,
much of which was created using the fruit and vegetables the
allotmenteers had grown themselves. A sign to mark the occasion was
erected and unveiled in memory of previous and long serving
allotmenteers who are sadly no longer with us. A notice board was also
errected which displayed stories and photographs of the allotments in
years gone by. Thanks go to The Chair of the Allotment Association

Masham Market
Three years ago, in line with other areas, our market was in decline. The
Wednesday market in particular had shrunk to as few as three stalls. It
was at this time that the Parish Council decided to attend to the task of
restoring the market to an attractive retail experience, both for locals and
visitors, by investing in, and employing a person to promote and revive
the market. A new sub-committee was formed to progress the concept,
and it has worked tirelessly and in tandem with a newly formed, local
and positive business group, called Masham Connections.
The Parish Council is delighted with the results, as are a number of local
businesses who have seen a good increase in footfall and income. Year
on year income from the Market and honesty box has increased
significantly, justifying the Council's investment. This has been
augmented by a much improved advertising campaign, the creation of
special themed market weekends, with entertainment and
demonstrations, and the introduction of the Farmer's Market on the first
Sunday of each month from April to October. This includes fresh fish, hot
foot from Grimsby, artisan bread, baking, cheeses, sausages, uniquely
local drinks, fruit and veg, etc. There are also plants, books, clothes, etc.
and very often accompanied by some pleasant musical entertainment for
a summer afternoon. The market place is also now licensed for the sale
of alcohol for the sampling and sales of merchandise. Masham has little
income from local Councils, merely small allowances for grass cutting,
etc. It is one of the most inexpensive places to live in the Harrogate area
with the income from the market and the honesty boxes for parking. rish

Property Marking
North Yorkshire Police are offering a free property marking service using
a 'Dot Peen' machine. Protect garden equipment, household IT items,
farm equipment, power tools, bikes, ride on mowers and many other
items by having a permanent visible unique number marked onto items.
This number if entered onto a National Immobilise property register data
base, vastly increases the chances of property being reunited with its
owner if lost or stolen. No minimum or maximum items marked per
household. Please let me know your name, contact number and
approximate number of items to be marked, this info will be collated and
forwarded to local Police who will then arrange a convenient day / time
to bring the Dot Peen marking machine to the village.
If you would like to make use of this free service or require further
information, please contact Claire Elsworth on 01677 470655 /
