Verifying an AD DS Installation
Updated: June 4, 2010
After you install ActiveDirectory Domain Services (ADDS), verify functionality such as Domain Name System (DNS)
resource record registrations and SYSVOL replication, and make a system state backup. For verification steps to
perform after you install ADDS, see Verifying ActiveDirectory Installation (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?
LinkId=68736). Those verification steps are part of the AD DS Operations Guide, which also covers many other
procedures for operating AD DS.
If the domain controller is running Windows Server2008R2, you can run the AD DS Best Practice Analyzer after you
install AD DS to determine how it complies with best practices for domain controller configuration. To start the AD
DS Best Practice Analyzer, click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then Server Manager. Double-click Roles,
and click Active Directory Domain Services. In the Best Practices Analyzer section, click Scan this role.
If the domain controller is running Windows Server2008, you can run the Microsoft IT Environment Health Scanner
(http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=155170) to perform diagnostic tests of the entire directory. The Microsoft
IT Environment Health Scanner does not complete tests on AD DS is the domain functional level is Windows
Server2008R2.
Community Additions
Thanks for the feedback. the topic has been updated to mention IT Environment Health Scanner for Windows Server 2008 and
Best Practices Analyzer for Windows Server 2008 R2. Most of the verification steps are duplicated in the AD DS Operations guide,
so this topic links there. The verification steps in the AD DS Operations guide are applicable to both Windows Server 2008 and
Windows Server 2008 R2.
The Netdiag.exe tool is not available for Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2. The Dcdiag, exe tool is built-in to
Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 and it's available if the domain controller role is installed. You can also obtain
it from Remote Server Administration Tools.

Information incorrect
This is a disgusting article. In other words, it's unbelievable Technet allows this article. In fact, the solution is incorrect, because
the link refers to the 2003 server.
So, we're asuming that there's no dcdiag and netdiag in 2008. The alternative is the IT Enviroment Health Scanner.
