Annex A:

THE PROPOSED CURRICULUM FOR B.S. PIPING AND PLUMBING ENGINEERING

The following list of subjects under the curriculum for Piping and Plumbing Engineering.
A student must take the general subjects in senior high school under Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) prior to take this course. For the graduates of any allied
engineering course, you may take selected major subjects of the said course. The allied proposed
course are Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Petroleum, Civil and Sanitary Engineering. The
Piping and Plumbing Engineering have composed of the following subjects:

Engineering Mathematics:
College Algebra
Algebraic expressions and equations; solution sets of algebraic equations in one
variable: linear, quadratic in form, exponential and logarithmic equations;
decomposition of fractions into partial fractions; solution sets of systems of linear
equations involving up to three variables.
Advance Algebra
Matrices and determinants; arithmetic and geometric series; solution sets of
different types of inequalities and systems involving quadratics; solution of linear
equations using determinants and matrices.
Plane and Spherical Trigonometry
Trigonometric functions; identifies and equations; solutions of triangles; law of
sines, law of cosines; inverse trigonometric functions; spherical trigonometry
Analytic Geometry
Equations of lines and conic sections; curve tracing of both rectangular and polar
coordinates in two-dimensional space.
Solid Mensuration
Concept of lines and planes; Cavaliers and Volume theorems; formulas for areas
of plane figures, volumes for solids; volumes and surfaces areas for spheres,
pyramids, and cones; zones, sector and segment of a sphere; theorems of Pappus.
Differential Calculus
Basic concepts of calculus such as limits, continuity and differentiability of
functions; differentiation of algebraic and transcendental functions involving one
or more variables; applications of differential calculus to problems on optimization,
rates of change, related rates, tangents and normal, and approximations; partial
differentiation and transcendental curve tracing.
Integral Calculus
Concept of integration and its application to physical problems such as evaluation
of areas, volumes of revolution, force and work; fundamental formulas and various
techniques of integration applied to both single variable and multivariable
functions; tracing of functions of two variables.
Differential Equations
Differentiation and integration in solving first order, first-degree differential
equations, and linear differential equations of order n; Application to problems
involving differential equations; and Non-Homogenous Equations.
Probability and Statistics
Basic principles of statistics; presentation and analysis of data; averages, median,
mode; deviations; probability distributions; normal curves and applications;
regression analysis and correlation; application to engineering problems.
Advance Engineering Mathematics
A study selected topics in mathematics and their applications in advanced courses
in engineering and other allied sciences. It covers the study of Complex Numbers,
Laplace and Inverse Laplace Transforms, Power Series, Fourier Series, Fourier
Transforms and Vector Analysis.
Numerical Methods
Methods of various topics such as Matrices and Determinants, Non-linear
Equations, Numerical Analysis, Eigenvalues & Eigenvectors, and Matrix
Differential Equations.
Engineering Science and Allied Subject:
General Chemistry
Basic concepts of matter and its classification; mass relationships in chemical
reactions; properties of gases, liquids, and solids; concepts of thermochemistry;
quantum theory and electronic behaviour; periodic relationship of elements in the
periodic table; intramolecular forces; and solutions.
Physics I
Vectors; kinematics; dynamics; work, energy, and power; impulse and momentum;
rotation; dynamics of rotation; elasticity; and oscillation.
Physics II
Fluids; thermal expansion, thermal stress; heat transfer; calorimetry; waves;
electrostatics; electricity; magnetism; optics; image formation by plane and curved
mirrors; and image formation by thin lenses.
Statics of Rigid Bodies
Force systems; structure analysis; friction; centroids and centers of gravity; and
moments of inertia.
Dynamic of Rigid Bodies
Kinetics and kinematics of a particle; kinetics and kinematics of rigid bodies; work
energy method; and impulse & momentum.
Mechanics of Deformable Bodies
Axial stress and strain; stresses for torsion and bending; combined stresses; beam
deflections; indeterminate beams; and elastic instability.
Engineering Economy
Concepts of the time value of money and equivalence; basic economy study
methods; decisions under certainty; decisions recognizing risk; and decisions
admitting uncertainty.
Principles of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering
Ecological framework of sustainable development; pollution environments: water,
air, & solid; waste treatment processes, disposal, and management; government
legislation, rules, and regulation related to the environment & waste management;
environmental management system; ecology & ecosystems; disaster &
environmental risk management; and public health management
Principles of Electricity and Electric Circuits
Basic electricity principles, basic laws and theorems used in analysing electrical
circuits in both direct current & alternating current conditions including single &
three phase circuits; and familiarization of electrical plans.
AC/DC Machinery
The course deals with performance characteristics and operation including losses
and efficiencies of DC & AC machines such as alternators, induction/synchronous
motors, synchronous converters and transformers. It includes demonstrations and
laboratory experiments.
Basic Electronics
This course discusses the construction, operation and characteristics of basic
electronic devices such as PN junction diode, light emitting diode, Zener diode,
bipolar junction transistor and field effect transistor. Diode circuit applications such
as clipper, clamper and switching diode circuits will be a part of the lecture.
Operation of a DC regulated power supply as well as analysis of BJT and FET
amplifier circuit will be tackled. It is also discusses the operation and characteristics
of operational amplifiers.
Elementary Surveying
Use of principal surveying instruments; surveying measurements and error theory;
basic plane surveying operations and computational method of position, traverses
and areas; basic cartography.
Engineering Drawing
Practices and techniques of graphical communication; application of drafting
instruments, lettering scale, and units of measure; descriptive geometry;
orthographic projections; auxiliary views; dimensioning; sectional views; pictorial
drawings; requirements of engineering working drawings; and assembly and
exploded detailed drawings.
Computer Fundamentals and Programming
Basic information technology concepts; fundamentals of algorithm development;
high-level language and programming applications; computer solutions of
engineering problems; basic computer aided design.
Engineering Materials
The course deals with the properties of engineering materials including mechanical
acoustical. Electrical, magnetic, chemical, optical and thermal properties;
laboratory experiments using equipment include: tension, compression, bending
shear, torsion and impact test.
Microbiology and Parasitology
The course has three (3) scopes which important for safe transmission of liquids
especially water & liquid waste in pipelines within a building. Scope 1 deals with
the Principles of Biology, and Tools and techniques in biology. Scope 2 deals with
sanitary microbiology, the study of microorganisms like bacteria, virus, protozoa
& fungi and their characteristics, sources, distribution, mode of transmission, roles
in disease transmission; general methods of isolation & identification; application
of bacteriology to public health & sanitary control of environment. Scope 3 deals
with parasitology the study of various parasites, their nature, occurrence and
transmission; transmission of parasitic infections and their implications to
environment and health; preventive and control measures for commonly
encountered parasitic infections.
Principle of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry
The course provides fundamental knowledge on organic and inorganic chemistry
as foundation for further studies on environmental chemistry. It focuses on the
study of hydrocarbons and halides, oxygen and nitrogen organic compounds,
organic compounds of biological interest, polymers, metals, minerals and nuclear
chemicals.
Environmental Chemistry
The fundamental of physical and chemical analysis of water and sewage treatment
process. With laboratory activities involving demonstration, exercises and studies
related to water and sewage analysis; Principles of organic and biochemistry;
Chemistry of environmental pollution.
Major Courses:
Workshop Theory and Practice
The course deals with the basic principles of machine shop practices. it includes
workshop safety and organization; simple workshop measuring instruments, hand
tools, fitting bench work, bench drill and bench grinder; sheet metal working;
principles of welding processes; welding metallurgy; joining process; testing and
inspection of welds; foundry and metal casting.
Thermodynamics 1
A course dealing with the thermodynamic properties of pure substances, ideal and
real gases and the study and application of the laws of thermodynamics in the
analysis of processes and cycles. It includes introduction to vapor and gas cycles.
Thermodynamics 2
This course is aimed to further enhance the student's knowledge regarding the
principles of Thermodynamics by using these principles in practical application
especially in the field of power generation. This includes study of real gases,
properties of gas and vapor mixtures and introduction to reactive systems.
Heat and Mass Transfer
The course deals with the different modes of heat and mass transfer; laws governing
conduction, convection & radiation and its application to the design of common
heat exchangers such as condensers. Cooling coils evaporators; and the
environmental impact of their operation.
Fluid Mechanics
The course deals with the nature and physical properties of fluids as well as the
identification and measurement of fluid properties. It emphasizes the application of
conservation laws on mass, energy and momentum to fluid systems either
incompressible or compressible flow, and inviscid or viscous flow as well as
headloss calculation on pipes and fittings. It is also have computer and laboratory
experiments.
Hydraulics
This course deals with the analysis and hydraulic design of by systems such as
reservoirs dams, spillways, gates, open channels, pipe networks, pumps and
turbines, sediment transport in rivers and reservoir, computer hydraulic modelling.
Fluid Machinery and Equipment
The course is a comprehensive study of principles and theories in the proper
operation, selection and application of the most commonly used fluid machineries
such as pumps and other equipment.
Combustion Engineering
The course deals with principles involved in combustion, carburetion and fuel
injection; fundamentals and basic principles of combustion processes, compression
and combustion charts, fuels, manifolds/engine components, engine performance
and combustion engine design.
HVAC Technology for Piping and Plumbing Engineers
The course deals with basic principles involved to HVAC systems in buildings and
related fundamentals; thermodynamic processes and heat engine cycles;
refrigeration cycles; refrigeration and refrigerant considerations; fundamentals of
fluids and fluid statics; general description of fluid in motion and flow
measurement; steady flow of incompressible fluid in pipes; transport of fluid in
HVAC systems; cooling and heating load calculation; and latest technology
development.
Plumbing and Pipeline Fundamentals
The course is a comprehensive study of principles and theories about plumbing and
pipelines such as historical development of plumbing engineering; plumbing and
piping materials; systems, materials, and fixtures for occupancies; fixtures, fixture
traps, and intercepting devices; water supply systems; flow in water supply piping;
sizing water supply system; hot water supply systems; drainage and vent systems;
flow of water in drainage piping; sizing drainage systems; flow of air in vent piping;
sizing vent piping; gas distribution systems; and miscellaneous pipe services.
Laboratory for this subject composed of actual plumbing and piping installation
including fixtures, hangers and supports, valves and fittings
Code, Contract, Ethics and Standards for Plumbing and Pipelines
The course is a comprehensive study of principles and theories of the plumbing
law, procurement law, code of ethics, ethical theories, and ethical issues in the
practice of engineering. Familiarization with the technical codes and standards
including local and national plumbing codes, codes from National Fire Protection
Association, codes from American Society of Mechanical Engineers, codes from
American Petroleum Institute, and other related codes for plumbing and pipelines.
Vibration Engineering
This course is intended to introduce the students to the fundamental concepts of
vibration as it affects operation and performance of machine components. It
involves modeling of mechanical and piping systems, derivation of the differential
equations for such systems and its varying solutions (responses) based on different
excitations. Emphases will be on analysis, design, measurement, damping and
computational aspects. The computer as a computational tool will also be utilized.
Structural Analysis for Pipelines
The course covers the different types of structural systems, loads & its
combinations & placement, applicable codes & specifications, methods of analysis
for statically determinate structures, and application of structural analysis for
pipelines including overhead/overhang & buried pipes including of the following:
Basic of Fracture Mechanics & Its Application to Pipeline; Fundamentals of
pipelines failure; Assessment of Gouges and Dents in Pipelines; Assessment of
Defects in Pipeline Girth Welds; Fracture Propagation; Fatigue Effects; In-service
Integrity Assessment; Yielding and buckling of Submarine Pipelines; Reliability
based Design of Pipelines; Code guidance on defect assessment; Finite element
method; Fundamental properties of soil; mechanical properties of soil, Ground
water, test of soil, design parameters of soils, Offshore pipeline geotechnical
aspects including; Pipeline stability of seabed, scour, design of buried pipelines,
trenching of pipelines, foundation options, geotechnical design of foundations and
tie back anchors.
Fundamentals of Liquid Hydraulics in Plumbing and Pipeline System
This course deals with solid & fluid transport thru pipelines such as Single-Phase
Incompressible Flow of Newtonian Fluid; Single-Phase Compressible Flow in
Pipe; Non-Newtonian Fluids; Flow of Solid-Liquid Mixture in Pipe (Slurry
Pipelines); Flow of Solid-Gas Mixture in Pipe (Pneumotransport); and Capsule
Pipelines.
Safety Engineering and Management
A course that deals with the study of industrial and construction safety & health
management. It includes risk mitigation process and components from hazards and
risk identifications, evaluation & control, and other principles regarding safety
engineering and management.
Principles of Petroleum and Gas Engineering
A course that deals with the study of petroleum and gas principles. It includes the
properties of hydrocarbons and gases, hydrocarbons and gases process,
transportation and storage of hydrocarbons and gases, and safety management in
petrochemical plants & offshore plants.
Corrosion and Corrosion Control
A course that deals with the study of corrosion fundamentals including: corrosion
reactions, polarization, corrosion cells and electrode potentials. Corrosion
mechanisms including: sweet and sour, erosion, micorbial attack, pitting, crevice
and environmental assisted cracking systems. Assessment of corrosion rates.
Assessment of corrosivity, corrosion control including: monitoring and inspection,
treatments and inhibitors, product processing, coatings and linings, Design and use
of cathodic protection. Survey methods.
Hydrocarbon Production and Process Engineering
A course that deals with the study of hydrocarbons production and process
including: Equations of state and their relationship to the physical properties of
hydrocarbons, Flow Processes, Properties of multicomponent, Mixtures, Single
phase gas and liquid hydrocarbon flow in pipelines, Multiphase, flow phenomena
in pipelines including slugs, Heat transfer, Wax, hydrates and corrosion, Chemical
treatment for flow modification of heavy oils, Hydrocarbon dew point control, Gas
and liquid dehydration, CO2 and H2S removal, Transients, Pumps and
compressors, Optimization/field development, SCADA, pressure protection and
leak detection.
Welding Engineering for Plumbing and Pipelines
This course covers a broad area of welding and joining process with emphasis of
metallurgy of alloys and property changes within engineering materials. The course
will include: weldability of materials; fusion welding techniques; choice of
shielding gases and types of welding electrodes; welding metallurgy; weld defects;
soldering and brazing; adhesive bonding and joint design; current research and
development of new joining techniques for advanced materials.
Plumbing and Sanitary System Design for House, Buildings and Factories
A course that deals with the design application of plumbing fundamentals. It consist
of review of plumbing fundamentals and codes & standards; and Design of
Plumbing and Sanitary Plans within house, buildings and factories including
swimming pools water piping design and LPG pipeline design.
Fire Protection for Building Facilities
A course that deals with fire fundamentals, fire dynamics, fire protection including
familiarization of Fire Detection and Alarm System , fire protection piping design,
fire code, standards & services, and fire safety audit & management.
Fundamentals of Electricity and Electrical System for Plumbing and Pipelines
A course that deals with electrical equipment principles for plumbing and pipelines
including motor control panels for pumps and valves, piping apparatus and
instrumentation.
Control System
A course that deals with the study of control system. It consist of subsystems and
processes assembled for the purpose of controlling the outputs of the processes.
Topics of this subject are modeling in the frequency and time domain analysis, time
response, analysis & design of feedback systems, stability and steady-state errors,
and root locus techniques.
Instrumentation and Automation
The course introduces the basic concepts of instrumentation and process controls
as well as important applications of feedback control systems with emphasis on
analysis as well as design techniques. Automation principles including industrial
control component: pneumatic, electric, electronic and fluid device; and special
control applications.
Principles of Construction Management with Introduction to Offshore Construction
A course that deals with the study of management for construction industries which
piping and plumbing trades are important in this industry. It covers the topics of:
Construction Principles, Procurement Management, Construction Productivity;
Construction Administration; Construction Finance; Introduction to Offshore
Construction including pipeline installation process; and Issues of Construction
related to piping and plumbing.
Total Quality Management
A course that deals with the study of quality management including the business
and industry standards like ISO, business process and other related topics.
Piping System Design and Analysis Theoretical and Practical Issues
The intent of this course is to provide the student with a comprehensive overview
of many varied activities that are involved in developing, operating and maintaining
pipeline infrastructure to transport hydrocarbons. Efficient designs can only be
achieved by using well established engineering principles together with advanced
computer software.
Piping and Plumbing Engineering Computer Application
The intent of this course is to provide the student with a comprehensive overview
of many varied computer activities such as CAD, Revit, BIM and other computer
applications.
Commissioning, Maintenance and Administrating of Plumbing and Piping for Building
Facilities
A course that deals with the study of facilitating the plumbing and piping during
testing & commissioning and maintenance; and building administration including:
tendering and estimating, contractual arrangements, tort and professional ethics,
resolution of disputes, and application of management science principles and
techniques for project management, planning and control.
On-the-Job Training/Supervised Industrial Training
The study includes exposure to industries related to plumbing, piping and pipelines.
Technical Communication and Writings
The nature of technical communication; skills and strategies of reading and writing
literature reviews, journal articles, and technical reports; and making oral
presentations.
Project Study 1 (Methods of Research)
This course covers the study of the methodologies used in conducting an
engineering research. It includes the types and application of research,
characteristics of a good research, research design, research instrument and data
gathering procedures. It also deals with the study of writing a research proposal and
various formats. After the student finish this course, they must prepare and defend
the project proposal.
Project Study 2 (Thesis)
This course aims to conduct scientific research project.
