6 tennis balls, masking tape, 12 beanbags, cones

Steps Through the Lesson

Into: (to gain background knowledge) Rationale:

To get warmed-up and introduce the topic
of teamwork, students will play giant tic tac
toe. Tape will be set up on the floor to
create a tic tac toe board. Students will be
split up into two teams per game board.
They will form a line within their team,
about 20 yards away from the game board.
They will then race over and place a
beanbag on one of the open spots. They
must then run back to their line and tag
their partners hand for them to tag off and
place another one. The teams play until
someone gets three in a row.
Through: (direct/indirect instruction)
Students will play capture the flag. They
will be split into two teams. There will be
three tennis balls at each end line of the
boundaries. Students must run over to the
other teams side to acquire a ball and
bring it back. The first team to collect all
three, wins. However, once students cross
the half line, the other team can tag them.
If they are tagged, they are placed in jail
until a teammates runs over tag them and
free them.

After these activities, students will write a
short story about a time they had to work
This game gets kids running and competitive
to get their heart rates up. It also begins to
teach them teamwork as they have to work
together when strategically placing the
beanbags on a specific spot. It is a fun game to
begin with that gets students involved in the
lesson.
Rationale:
This game teaches teamwork in many
different aspects. Students need to
communicate and distribute roles so that not
everyone is running over at once and leaving
their side unguarded. They also need to work
together and at times risk their own life to
bring back their teammates out of jail.

This implements the ELA aspect into the
lesson and has students reflect on teamwork
and what it can help them accomplish. It
