Abstract
This report outlines 3-story building designed in according to ACI 318M-08 and
Jordanian code for loads and forces. In this project only slabs and beams were
designed where the system of building is a reinforced concrete moment resistant
frame system and slabs are one-way ribbed only.
Our group thanks and respects Dr. Hasan Katakhuda for his efforts and supervision.

Introduction
As any project a civil (structural) engineer takes plans from architectural engineer
to design a building. We toke these plans where they are attached in the first chapter
in this report. Then we designed slabs and beams respectively in the buildings. In
the second chapter of this report we put only final detailing of beams and slabs of
the buildings. In the third chapter we put the calculations of loads how we got
results of the second chapter..
1
Chapter One: Project plans
This chapter will include plans on A3 pages. The project consists of 3 symmetric
stories each story has an area of 430 squared meter.
2
Chapter Two: Final Detailing
In this chapter we will show detailing of beams and slabs for each building without
showing calculations, where calculations are in chapter 3.
*Note: Sections of beams and ribs are only shown in chapter 3. You can go to
chapter 3 to see these sections.

Chapter Three: Calculations
In this chapter we will discuss how we calculated every part in the two buildings:
Loads, ribs reinforcement, beams reinforcement.
Calculations were made in detail only for the first rib and beam. Then we made and
used spreadsheets (excel).
Firstly you should know that we used Fy = 420 MPa, Fc = 28 MPa, Fyt = 420 MPa,
c=24KN/m3, c(walls) =18KN/m3 and other materials = 18 KN/m3.
Cover for ribs and beams are 20mm and 40mm respectively.
For live load we computed it, in according to Jordanian code for loads and
forces, as weighted average load per square meter:
WL = 2.5 KN/m2
3.2 Ribs
R1:
At first here are spans:
4.9 5.9
1.4120315
= or 0.28 28 120 315 / 420
420
= 126 or 119 mm2 = 126 mm2
So use 214 where As provided = 307 mm2 > As okay.
For Positive Moment:
Assume a = 10
9
As = 140 mm2
a = 4.8
As = 138 mm2
Asmin = 126 or 119 mm2 = 126 mm2
So use 210 where As provided = 157 mm2 > As okay.
Smin = 25mm.
No need for stirrups but we put minimum stirrups as hangers. Use closed
stirrups 58/m
Finally As for temperature and shrinkage = 0.0018 x 65,500 = 117.9 mm2
R2:

Use closed stirrups 58/m
As for temperature and shrinkage = 118 mm2

3.3 Beams
B1:
12
Wu = 2.5 x (0 + 5.9/2) x 1.6 + 8.82 x (0 + 5.9/2) x 1.2 + 0.4 x 0.5 x 24 x 1.2
Wu = 48.8 KN/m.
13
Mumax(-ve) = 73 KN.m, Mumax(+ve) = 54 KN.m
Vumax = 61.14 KN
d = h cover stirrups dia. steel dia./2
= 400 40 10 14/2 = 343 mm
1. For negative moment:
assume a = 10
106
As =
0.9420( 2 )
73106
= 10
0.9420(343 2 )
= 571 mm2
a = 20.17
As = 580 mm2
a = 20.47
As = 580
1.4
Asmin = or 0.28 / 420
420
14
1.4500343
= or 0.28 28 500 343 / 420
420
= 571 or 605 mm2 = 605 mm2
Use for all negative moments 414 which gives As provided = 615
mm2>Asmin
2. For positive moment:
Assume a = 10
As = 422 mm2
a = 14.9
As = 425 mm2
a = 15
As = 425 mm2
Asmin = 571 or 605 = 605 mm2
Use for all positive moments 414 which gives As provided = 615mm2
>Asmin
3. For shear:
Vu = 112 KN.
Vc = 0.75 x x bw x d / (6 x 1000)
= 0.75 x 28 x 500 x 343 / ( 6 x 1000 ) = 113 KN
Vu@d = 2 x Vu x (Span/2 d)/Span
= 2 x 112 x ( 4500/2 343 ) / 4500 = 94 KN
Vc >Vu@d > 0.5 Vc. So we should use minimum stirrups (i.e maximum
spacing).
Assume to use two legs closed stirrups 10 Av=157mm2,
Smax = d/2
= 343/2 = 171.5 mm2 = 170 mm2
4500 / 170 = 26.47 stirrups 26.47/4.5 = 5.88 stirrups/m = 6/m
So use closed stirrups with two legs 610/m
4. As temperature and shrinkage = 0.0018 x 200000 = 360 mm2
Note: Other moments details are in chapter 2, here are only calculations and
samples not every single point would be calculated.
