LESSON DESIGN

Lesson Introduction to Unit Permutations and Combinations

Title/Focus Combinatorics
Subject/Grade Math 30-1 Time Duration 80 minutes
Level

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

Permutations, Combinations and Binomial Theorem SO 1 Apply the fundamental counting principle
to solve problems. [C, PS, R, V]

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Count the total number of possible choices that can be made, using graphic organizers such
as lists and tree diagrams.
2. Explain, using examples, why the total number of possible choices is found by multiplying
rather than adding the number of ways the individual choices can be made.
3. Solve a simple counting problem by applying the fundamental counting principle.

ASSESSMENTS
Formative Observations of participation in class discussions and small group
work
Questioning to elicit student thinking, e.g., Does order matter in
this case? Why or why not?
Circulating to provide feedback to students while they work

Summative Completed notes in workbook

Written solution to Small Number and the Basketball Tournament
Problem
Homework questions

PLAN FOR DIFFERENTIATION

Storytelling format may be more accessible to Indigenous students, as well as providing an
alternative entry point for all students
Different language options available for students with knowledge of Cree, Blackfoot, or Sliammon
languages
Option to work individually and in groups
Information presented orally and in writing
Activity provides different entry point to learning
Use of technology and manipulatives to provide multiple representations of the concept

PROCEDURE
Time Description

Introduction 5 min As students get settled in, hand out printed copies of Small
Number and the Basketball Tournament. Watch the video of
the story as a class.

Problem Solving 5 min Give students some time to attempt the problem on their own
to create a need for an understanding of permutations and
combinations.

Direct Instruction and 15 min Have students open their Precalculus Mathematics Workbook
Guided Practice 12 and turn to the first lesson on Permutations and
Combinations. Go over first lesson as a class. For each type
of question, demonstrate one example (I do), do the next
example as a class and elicit formative feedback by asking
students to show the solution on their fingers (we do) and then
for the final example, circulate the classroom and observe
student work while students attempt the example on their own
(you do).

Problem Solving 40 min Students revisit the problem with their new understanding of
Revisited permutations and combinations. Working independently or in
small groups, students will produce a written solution to the
problem that explains their reasoning to be handed in at the
end of class.

Independent Practice 15 min When finished the problem, students can complete homework
questions from Precalculus Mathematics Workbook 12.
