DEVELOPMENTOFSOUTHAZADEGANPROJECT
1.0 GENERAL
1.1 Introduction
CNPCI is responsible for development operations of the South Azadegan oil field located in
the southwest of the Islamic Republic of Iran, close to the border of Iran and Iraq and 80km
west of Ahwaz city in Khuzestan province.
This specification defines the minimum requirements of the surface facilities development
of the South Azadegan Oilfield for the design, fabrication, testing, and inspection of C&I
Earthing.
1.2 Definitions
1.3 Abbreviations
IS : Intrinsically Safe
ISE : Intrinsically Safe Earth system
LER : Local Equipment Room
LCR : Local Control Room
CCR : Central Control Room
PE : Protection Earth
SI : System International Standard Units for Measurement
Azadegan field facilities shall be designed, constructed and operated in accordance with
the IPS (Iranian Petroleum Standards, 5th edition in 2010) supplemented, where necessary,
by internationally recognized standards.
1 Material requisition;
3 IPS;
4 International Standards.
3.1 General
All C&I equipment containing an electrical signal or power supply shall be earthed for
personnel safety reasons and for minimising electrical noise interference. This includes
enclosures, cables, cable trays and conduits.
The instrument earth systems include:
Instrument Protection Earth (PE)
Instrument Earth system (IE)
Intrinsically Safe Earth system (ISE)
C&I Earthing system cables shall be coloured as follows:
PE system green-and-yellow
IE system green
ISE system green with blue stripes every 1m and at cable ends
Hereafter are described the rules to be followed for equipment linked to LERs or CCR. The
same rules apply for other similar buildings and areas in the plant.

The IE is the reference point for all digital and analogue signals. Relevant enclosures in the
LERs shall be fitted with one IE earth bar mounted on insulated blocks.
All relevant instrument cable screens are connected to this point through multi-core cable
overall screens. Screens shall be earthed at one point only. For field instruments, the
screens are insulated from earth at the field end and connected to individual terminal in
junction boxes. For junction boxes, all screens shall be connected to dedicated screen
terminal continuity strips. Junction boxes will be fitted with an extension earth terminal.
Overall screen continuity shall be maintained up to LERs.
Within the LERs, the overall screen, and individual screens if any, of the multi-core cables
shall be connected to screen continuity strips and then to the IE earth bar in the relevant
enclosures. Spare cores within the enclosures shall be connected to terminal blocks and
then bonded to the relevant IE earth bar via insulated conductors with at least the same
section as the spare cores.
For Local Instruments Shields shall be earthed at one point only. This point is located in the
instrument room. Cable glands shall never be used for earthing purposes.
The IE earth bar shall be connected to the IE loop by two 35mm green cables. The IE loop

The ISE is the reference point for earthing intrinsically safe devices (shields and/or screens,
voltage references, etc.). Relevant enclosures in the LERs shall be fitted with one ISE earth
bar mounted on insulated blocks.
All relevant instrument cable screens are connected to this point through multi cable
screens. Screens shall be earthed at one point only. For field instruments, the screens are
insulated from earth at the field end. For junction boxes, all screens shall be connected to
dedicated screen continuity strips. Screen continuity shall be maintained up to LERs.
Within the LERs, the overall screen, and individual screens if any, of the multi cables shall
be connected to screen continuity strips and then to the ISE earth bar in the relevant
enclosures. Spare cores within the enclosures shall be connected to terminal blocks and
then bonded to the relevant ISE earth bar via insulated conductors with at least the same
section as the spare cores. Galvanic barriers and Zener barriers are connected by this
earth system.
The ISE earth bar shall be connected to the ISE loop by two 35mm green cables with blue
stripes. The ISE loop comprised of 35mm green cable with blue stripes shall then be
connected to the ISE earth dispatcher of the concerned room.
The IE is also the reference point for all signals connected to the Control System and their
electronic elements. Enclosures & consoles shall be fitted with one IE earth bar mounted on
insulated blocks. Control System requirements will be confirmed or amended by VENDOR.
All relevant cable screens are connected to this point. Screens shall be earthed at one point
only.
The cable overall screens shall be connected to screen continuity strips and then to the IE
earth bar in the relevant enclosures or consoles.
The instrument earth circuitry shall be a dedicated and isolated from the protection earth in
order to avoid electronic noise and provided with high frequency chokes.
Then the principle is the same as for the other IE earth bars as described in the Instrument
Earth system chapter here above.
Particular attention shall be paid to the isolation of panel reference earth bars within panels
and enclosures. Cable armour shall not be used for screening purpose. All cable screens
shall be kept insulated from cable armour, instrument housing, steel structure and any
other electric conductors.

Power supply, equipment, and instrument signal earth shall not be interconnected.
Generally, instrument signal cable screen are earthed on an isolated bus that is connected
to a separate earth. The exception can be thermocouple screen, which in many instances
are earthed in the field at the thermocouple head.
The equipment is earthed to the power supply earthing dispatcher. It is recommended that
earthing conductor connect the equipment directly to the earthing dispatcher to ensure a
low impedance ground path.
Power earth is typically specified as a maximum of 3 to 5 resistance to true ground for
most plant applications.
Instrument earth shall be less than 1 resistance.
The earth systems shall be checked to verify the installation compliance with the
requirements described in this specification.
The mechanical completion, the insulation of earth cables and earth connections shall be
checked.
All earth resistances shall be measured and if necessary additional earth connections
added to comply with the resistance limits.
3.9 Responsibilities
Each VENDOR, of field equipment and/or room cabinets, is responsible of the compliance
of the part of earth systems within its scope of supply.
The PE dedicated to instrument equipment, IE, ISE earth dispatchers shall be provided by
the Instrument Construction team.
Instrument Construction team is responsible of:
The connection of instrument field cables and interconnecting cables to the relevant
earth bars
