ABSTRACT

This research is based on the assumption that actors of our time must be willing to offer a much
wider range of specific skills that will enable them to find faster and more certain a place in the
acting profession. If an actor wants to respond adequately to the tasks in the current
circumstances, it takes as much as possible developed ability to think quickly, react
spontaneously, create and find appropriate stage solutions. The author argues that art education
can help develop these skills and thus build the basic acting skills and help the young
professionals to deal with the demands of the present time and provide themselves a chance to
work. The object of this project is the importance of the use of improvisation in acting pedagogy,
and special attention is given to the Theater games and Theater sports as the subspecies of
Improvisational theatre. After the introductory chapters, where the author presents the theoretical
basis of Improvisational theatre, specifically referring to the history and development of this kind
of theater in the United States and Canada, the most important settings of Keith Johnston, Viola
Spolin, Paul Seals, David Shepherd have been presented. Having explained the process of
collection, classification, analysis and adaptation of a significant number of exercises that are
used in games of Theatre sports as well as in the other forms of Improvisational theatre, the
author presents his practically verified conclusions about the effects of improvisation exercises in
the process of the development of certain abilities and skills of students who participated in
doctoral-art project "Do not hesitate! Improvise". Conclusions are consistent with the initial
assumption that the use of the method of improvisation in acting pedagogy significantly affects
the proper development and progress of students, as it allows them to be liberated, confident and
imaginative on the stage. In addition to the existing methods that are widely used in educational
practice, it has been confirmed that the use of improvisation exercises is also a legitimate
pedagogical method for achieving obvious results or the significant individual student progress in
a short period of time. Using this method, students are directly encouraged to undertake
additional efforts to overcome their own obstacles and constraints, master and develop the skills
and qualities they need for acting profession.
