Two global mining giants have joined forces to merge their coal mines at a time when
thousands of Hunter Valley workers are reeling from job losses.

Glencore and Peabody Energy have announced a 50/50 partnership to develop what they
call a brownfield open cut coal project in the Upper Hunter Valley.

It will be between the existing United and Wambo open cut mines, near Singleton.

Glencore says its share of production will not exceed three million tonnes per year.

Peabody says its share of output is expected to remain consistent with historical volumes of
approximately three million tonnes.

The mine is expected to start production in 2017 and the companies say it will deliver
optimal resource recovery and infrastructure use.

They say it will significantly reduce operating and capital costs.

The mine announcement comes after thousands of the state miners have lost their jobs, in
response to tough market conditions.

Peabody's Wambo underground mine is not part of the deal.
