M11 PT STC Injector Cup Cavitation Electronic STC Kit Installation


Instructions
This Installation Instruction introduces the M11 pressure time (PT) Electronic Step Timing Control (STC) and
M11 CENTRY PT modified Electronic STC kits for prevention of injector cup cavitation. The PT Electronic
STC kit began being installed on all production M11 engines starting in mid-March 2000. The PT Electronic
STC kit can also be used on existing M11 engines in the field for fixing injector cup cavitation issues. The M11
CENTRY PT Electronic STC began limited production on January 1, 2001 for all Bomag engines. The
CENTRY PT Electronic STC kit was released on August 1, 2001 for all other OEM's. This kit can be used in
the field on existing M11 CENTRY engines for correcting injector cup cavitation.

Summary

The Electronic STC module kit Part Number (see Electronic STC Module Kit Part Numbers - Table 1) is
determined using the rated engine speed, number of flywheel teeth, and mechanical STC switch point. Also, the
hardware installation kit, Part Number 4024815 (12-VDC systems) or Part Number 4024816 (24-VDC systems),
is needed to do a complete installation.

The CENTRY PT Electronic modified STC kit will only be used on M11 engines that have a CENTRY
ECM and a hydromechanical STC valve . A new ECM calibration, Table 3, will need to be loaded. Also the
hardware installation kit, Part Number 4024815 (12-VDC systems) or Part Number 4024816 (24-VDC systems),
and wiring harness, Part Number 4070697, are needed for a complete installation.

The M11 electronic step time oil control valve has been revised for 24-VDC applications. The electronic step
time control production engines, as well as engines that were repaired under Temporary Repair Practice 9911,
will now use a 32-VDC solenoid on the oil control valve .

Cummins Inc. recommends that if a 24-VDC solenoid fails on a M11 electronic step time control engine in the
field, it be replaced with a 32-VDC solenoid.

The 32-VDC solenoid replaces the 24-VDC solenoid in all 24-VDC electronic step time control applications.

The 32-VDC solenoid can be identified by a 32-VDC etching as a stripe that is black in color painted on the top
of the solenoid.

Injector cup cavitation is a failure mode that after an extended time can result in black smoke and poor fuel
economy. Engines operating at high speed with rapidly varying duty cycles, such as excavators and trash
compactors, are more susceptible to cavitation. Cavitation in the injector cup occurs when engine operation
transitions from engine-rated speed and full load to high idle and no load. The STC valve opens during this
transition as a response to the change in fuel rail pressure. This allows oil into the STC tappets, advancing the
injection timing; however, the fuel rail pressure decay rate is not fast enough, resulting in slow response time of
the hydromechanical STC valve .

When the engine speed increases to high idle, and before the STC valve has time to open, the temperature of
the metering chamber inside the injector is elevated, increasing the vapor pressure of the fuel. This results in
vapor bubble formation. Cavitation damage occurs when the bubbles collapse at the bottom of the injector cup.
These kits address this issue by allowing a faster STC valve response time, sending oil to the STC tappets
earlier, advancing the injection timing, and thus reducing the opportunity for vapor bubble formation.

Diagnostics and Parts Information

CENTRY Fuel System, Bulletin 3666070.

Install a set of new injectors using the 8- or 10-hole cup configuration that was removed from the engine. Refer
to Procedure 006-026. This will make sure that the injectors will not have any unseen cavitation damage internal
to the injector cup at the time of kit installation.

The M11 CENTRY PT Electronic STC kit, Field Fix number (FF NR 7) and the M11 PT Electronic STC kit,
Field Fix number (FF NR 3) must be stamped on the engine dataplate, after the kit has been installed. The
engine dataplate, along with the location of the field fix number location (1), are shown in Figure 1.
