INTRODUCTION
Sleep is a critical determinant of health and well-being that is necessary to fight off
infection, support metabolism, and can perform well in school. (U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services, 2013). Deprivation on the other hand is the result of the frustration
deprivation is a serious and common condition that has been linked to concerns such as
achievement (Carskadon, 2002; Lufi, Tzichinsky & Hador, 2011; Maas & Robbins, 2010;
Malone, 2011; Owens, 2010; Wolfson & Carskadon, 2003) Moreover, sleep loss resulted
in daytime sleepiness that was also correlated with poor academic performance.
For teenagers, the evidence is growing that chronic sleep deprivation affects
school attendance, performance, and their overall mental and physical health
(Carskadon, 2002; Gibson et. , al. , 2006; Maas & Robbins, 2010; Moreno, 2010; NSF,
2012; Owens,2010). Dahl (1999) found that sleep deprivation in teenagers was linked to
students performed poorly on learning capacity skills such as, attention, memory and
problem-solving tasks, and that the lack of sleep therefore affected their academic
described todays teenagers as walking zombies and stated that due to inadequate
sleep, alertness, concentration, memory, productivity, perception, senses, and ability to
think critically and creatively and to multitask are all significantly impaired.
Lack of adequate sleep can affect judgment mood, ability to learn and retain
information, and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injury. In other way
chronic sleep deprivation may lead to a host of health problems including obesity,
Sleep/ Health Sleep , 2017). According to Pilcher and Walters (1997) students who were
lack of sleep for 24 hours scored significantly lower than students who slept under normal
sleeping condition for approximately 8 hours. One of the results may influence academic
sleepiness include the quality and quantity of sleep and the misalignment of circadian
rhythms (Roehrs et al. , 2005). All living organisms have circadian rhythms, which is
eternally generated cycles that occur at the cellular level and direct sleep-wake cycles
(Graham, 2000).
Awareness on the Effects of Sleep Deprivation among the Grade 11 Senior High
School Students in Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges is a study that aims to unveil
how sleep deprivation contributes to the low academic performance and health issues.
The respondents of this study are the students of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges.
This study aims to determine the level of awareness of Grade 11 Senior High
1.) What is the level of awareness on the effects of sleep deprivation of Grade 11
a.) Health
2.) Who are mostly affected by sleep deprivation, specifically in terms of sex
orientation?
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
different variables in the study. The independent variable is the awareness on the effects
of sleep deprivation among senior high students. While the dependent variables are the
level of awareness on the effects of sleep deprivation; health and academic performance
and sex orientation who are mostly affected among the senior high students of Ramon

The researcher delimited their study on determining if the Grade 11 Senior High

awareness.
The result of this study will be useful to a number of people specifically to the
following:
