0 INTRODUCTION

Thermal comfort is an aspect of learning about the human body's response to the
effects of climate. Climate meant here is the climate of a given area by conditions prevailing
winds and its elements such as sunlight, temperature, humidity, wind and precipitation that
could affect the thermal conditions in a building. The relations of human comfort with its
surroundings depends on several factors such as physical condition, psychology and sociology.
Thermal comfort is something that is subjective depends on an individual to interpret it. For
these reasons, it is very difficult to create occupant comfort for all mankind.

Thermal comfort in a place of living is an important physical aspect of peoples

quality of life. This depends on internal and external thermal discomfort that contribute to
quality of life from the surrounding. There are some discomfort issues that may affect the
building occupant comfort of life of residents in certain area whether in city or in rural area.
This is because nearly 80 percent of the time people spend their times indoor so the thermal
comfort in the building is very important. Other than that, thermal comfort will ensure a good
building occupant comfort for people to use.

As in this assignment, we are required to do a fieldwork assessment on the effect of

climatology in the building occupant comfort. We have chosen a residential area located in
Taman Universiti Parit Raja, Johor. This residential is a terrace house with a total area of
(650011500) mm. The height of the house is equal to 2400 mm. The area of the front door is
(20002000) mm while the back door is (10001000) mm. This house is the middle house so
it has only one window at front and back of the house respectively with a size of (10002000)
mm.

In order to complete this task, there are a few climatology data that have been
collected. The data are temperature, air velocity, relative humidity and luminance. These data
measurement was carried out at 6.00 am, 12.00 pm, 6.00 pm and 12.00 am. The data collected
was tabulated in the table and also computed in the Ecotech Analysis 2011 software for an
analysis.
CONCLUSION

Based on the data collected, the comparison of data that can be make from the
software and luxmeter is not significantly different. The differences that happened is due to the
Ecotech Analysis software. This is because the software is a 2011 version which is not the
latest one. Other than that, the setup location is also not in Batu Pahat but in Kuala Lumpur and
this contribute to the differences that resulted from the analysis.

This exploratory of the assignment concluded that in order to achieve good quality of
life, many aspects need to be count and considered such as environmental sustainability,
provision of facilities and facilities of shelter, transportation, accessibility to facilities, and so
on. Thermal comfort inside and outside the building is one of the most important aspects that
are assessed to ensure the rapid development of the country and also to make sure that the
comfort of the residents is on good level and not just provide shelter only. Provision of shelter
compromising thermal comfort can affect the quality of life of the population.

Based on this fieldwork, it stressed the importance of air circulation in the house and
also the landscape to help simplify the comfort temperature to achieve the thermal comfort in
the building. This aspect greatly influences the quality of life because the uncomfortable
situation such as feeling hot due to high temperature and difficulty in breathing due to lack of
air ventilation will cause the thermal comfort to greatly decrease. The discomfort caused
problems among others, lethargy, lazy and so on.

There are two main sources of building heat which contribute to decreasing of thermal
comfort. The two main sources are internal and external. Internal sources include people, lights,
appliances, equipment while external sources include solar load, conduction, ventilation, and
infiltration. Like temperature, there are also two main sources of moisture which is internal and
external. Internal includes evaporation, desorption, and people (breath, clothes) while external
includes ventilation, infiltration, and permeation. In order to create a high thermal comfort,
these are the factors that should be emphasize thoroughly.
