Quiz FI-2202: Electricity & Magnetism

Monday 27-02-2017, Time: 11.00.-13.00. Discussion Room 2, BSCA Building

(Lecturer: Prof. Doddy Sutarno, PhD)

1. A half circle line segment of radius R carries a uniform line charge of .

a. Find the potential difference between points A and O.
b. Find also the electric field at those points respectivelly.
(Sugestion: Find first, the potential along y-axes between O and A).
y

O x

2. A metal sphere of radius R, carrying charge q, is surrounded by a thick concentric metal shell
(inner radius a, outer radius b, as in Figure below). If the shell carries no net charge.
(a) Find the surface charge density at R, at a, and at b.
(b) Find the potential at the centre, using infinity as the reference point.
(c) Now the outer surface is touched to a grounding wire, which lowers its potential to
zero (same as at infinity). How do your answers to (a) and (b) change?
(d) Find potential energy stored in the system for the two case (before and after the
outer sphere is grounded).
