1.2.2 PAT Air Purifier

The PAT air purifier provides the engine with a cleanroom
environment by removing airborne dust particles that damage
dust-sensitive mechanisms and optics. It also provides the engine
with constant positive pressure.
The PAT is only powered OFF when the filters are replaced.

NOTE: The location of the PAT is always towards the front of the
engine and away from the vacuum pump.

1.2.3 Vacuum Pump

EXHAUST

This unit switches on just before imaging to provide vacuum that

holds the plate firmly to the drum surface, and then switches off
to release the plate for output.

replaced.
12 LUXEL V-6 GETTING STARTED TUTORIAL

1.3.3 Switch On the PC

Since the PC holds the RIP and PCI applications, it must be
switched on prior to the engine. Failure to do so will result in the
engine not being detected by the PC.
To turn on your PC refer to the manufacturers documentation.

1.3.3.1 Launch the V-6 LuxelServer

1. LuxelServer, which operates as a web server for PCI, automatically
launches on start-up of the PC.
The PC System Tray shows the LuxelServer Manager as a
minimised icon:

2. Normally, you would not need to open or view the Manager

during job imaging.
If, however, you need to check the Connection status to the
engine, double-click on the LuxelServer Manager icon to obtain:

The message shows that the server is either Online or a Device not
Attached. You can return the engine to Online by switching on
the engine or, for a more complex failure, checking the FireWire
cable connection to the engine.

1.3.4 Switch On the Engine

1. Make sure the processor is switched on (if installed).
2. Locate the On/Off switch at the rear of the engine and turn the
engine power on.

This icon shows as a Wait Timer while the system functions initialise.

PROCESSOR NOT READY:

The processor is currently not ready to receive imaged plates. This
remains in grey if the processor is taking extra time to respond,
possibly because of a problem with chemicals or pre-heat
temperature. Check the processor LCD to determine the cause and
ensure the unit is ready before continuing.

2. As each module completes its initialisation and self-test routines,

the icons on the Boot page turn from grey to bold.

NOTE: If you wish to prevent the machine from immediately

imaging after initialising, click the Pause button and the PAUSE
page appears instead of the RUN page, allowing you to start
imaging when it is convenient.

queue and wait for media to be reloaded. This will prevent you
downloading further jobs to the engine.
Abort Job: Select this option to abort the image from the engine
queue so that other images can be downloaded. Aborted jobs will
remain on the RIP queue for you to retry and expose when media
becomes available.

1.4.2 Laser Calibration

LASER The system is calibrated during the site installation for correct
CALIBRATION exposure for the plate types that you will be using. It can,
however, be periodically recalibrated. See the PCI Users Guide for
more information.

1.5 Managing Media Output from the PCI

1.5.1 Creating New Media
By creating a list of media names for your jobs you can specify the
plate type, size and thickness you require for a typical workflow.
LUXEL V-6 SERIES CTP 19
In addition, you can use the media options to:
create, edit and delete a media name: media names are
selected for any one of the available cassettes used to
output a job.
create, edit and delete a media type: media types are
recognised by the RIP and used to set up the print
characterisation.
In this section, you will only need to create a new media name for
your typical production job. Initially, the PCI shows a set of pre-
defined media names and types which have been factory loaded.
For more details on how to use media create and edit options, see
the PCI Operators Guide.
A media list can have up to 32 different media names selectable
from the RIP, PCI or MMI. From this list you can choose a media
for each cassette depending on your configuration:
Fully-Automatic: these cassettes (with trolleys) are physical
containers which hold a media pack matching a selected
media name.
Your machine may have 1 cassette as standard and up to 4
other cassettes as options.
Multi-Cassette Autoloader: these cassettes are physical con-
tainers which hold a media pack matching a selected media
name.
Your machine will have 2 cassettes as standard and up to 5
other cassettes as options.
Manual and Semi-Automatic: these cassettes are PCI, MMI and
RIP software containers which hold a selected media name
matching the plate to be loaded on the platen.

NOTE: Once the media list is full you will have to delete a name
to make space for a new name.

To create a new media name proceed as follows:

1. While in PAUSE mode, click on the keypad Maintenance button to
open the Maintenance page.

This method is used if, for instance, there are different jobs that
require different plate types and sizes.
3. Keep Autoload disabled for the rest of the tutorial.

1.6.3 Calibrate the Output

At this stage you can calibrate the plate output for:
Linearisation from the RIP Manager, and

 Print Characterisation (if required).

Print Characterisation is the process whereby plate dot
percentages are matched with print machine dot
percentages. They always need to be matched in order to
ensure a high quality of print output.
Follow the instructions in your RIP documentation. Linearisation
and characterisation require a plate load and collection using the
information below.

1.6.4 Load a Plate for Job Output

1. Select and download a typical job from the RIP to the engine.
Now move to the Engine.

1.8 Loading/Calibrating Media (Luxel V-6 Single-

Cassette)
1.8.1 Load a Cassette
This section describes how to load an empty cassette while it is
positioned on top of a trolley. You would normally complete this
operation as part of the Change Cassette procedure, when a cas-
sette needs to be removed and replaced as jobs are downloaded
during a typical workflow. The system can identify up to five sepa-
rate cassettes and hold information on the media currently
selected for each cassette.
If you require more information on the various MMI buttons and
icons that appear while changing a cassette, then refer to the
Luxel V-6 MMI Users Guide.
Loading a cassette is always completed in a safelight area using
any one of the media sizes and types currently specified.

NOTE: Before the cassette is loaded, make sure the plates are
fully acclimatised to the platesetter room environment.

Use the following method to load an empty cassette located on a

trolley:
1. Decide on the number of plates you need, their size, type and
thickness.
Depending on the plate size and weight, you may need to
subdivide the pack into sections and load one section of about 25
plates at a time, ensuring that each interleave paper sheet is in
place.

CAUTION: make sure all the interleaf sheets are in place for a
cassette pack, and there is a plate at the top of the pack.

One practical method for loading a cassette is to open the plate

pack on a table and then lift one section at a time onto the
cassette.
2. Move the trolley into the safelight area and park by pressing your
foot down on the two brake pedals.

1.10 Recovering From Plate Jam Errors

The system software constantly monitors the machine for errors
that might appear because of a fault on the electronics, optics or
media handling. Error reports are given an error code number
which can be of two different types:
Fatal: the system will not restart until the error is cleared.
Non-Fatal: this is usually a warning allowing the user to
continue.
In this section, only the media handling plate jams are explained.
These errors are always fatal and require you to follow a recovery
procedure that is opened as a separate PCI page. You can obtain
full details or all errors and their recovery procedures from the PCI
Users Guide.
52 LUXEL V-6 GETTING STARTED TUTORIAL

1.10.1Plate Jam Errors

When a plate jam occurs you may need to manually remove the
plate from the engine or autoloader. This is a simple operation
and can usually be performed after identifying the plate location
and opening the nearest cover or door. Note that the user access
door on the engine is interlocked and opening it will switch off
all hazardous devices, such as, the laser.

NOTE: Whenever an interlocked cover or door is opened and

then shut, the engine will automatically reboot.

The following shows the sequence of events and recovery

procedure for the drum error 4800:
1. The PCI RUN page shows that an error has occurred with its type
(Fatal) and code number:

handling mechanism inside the drum.
In this example, the plate has been pushed partly into the output
conveyor. You can easily access the plate by:
lifting the pullbar towards the input to access the plate

continuing to wind the roller bands until it exits the

engine, or
pulling the plate into the drum from behind the input
conveyor.
5. After removing the plate, close the user access door and the
system automatically reboots. Its always wise to check the last
plate from the engine to find out which job to resend.

1.11 Switching off the Platesetter

Before switching off the engine at the mains on/off switch, the
platesetter completes a controlled shutdown to ensure that the
spinner slows to a stop, the last imaged plate ejects, and the
traverse moves to a secure position.
Always use the correct shutdown sequence before switching off.
If you fail to select Shutdown, and switch on the system at a later
stage, you may find there are plates in the engine that have not
been ejected.
If the PCI is locked then you can either shutdown at the MMI or
put the MMI in RUN mode to unlock the PCI.
