CE 691: Special Topics in Civil Engineering (Blast Engineering)

Assignment 5
Due on October 20, 2017

1. Model a free-air burst using ANSYS. Consider Z = 2.5f t/lb1/3 . You may choose W = 1000 kg
and R = 10 m (the problem considered in the class). Compute incident overpressure, reflected
overpressure, arrival time of the wave, positive phase duration, reflected positive impulse, and
peak dynamic pressure. Compare these results with those obtained in the class. If you have
chosen different values of W and R, then compare the ANSYS results with those obtained
using the UFC-3-340-02 charts in a tabular format.

2. Model a mid-air burst using ANSYS. You may consider the problem solved in the class (height
= 30 ft, horizontal distance = 45 ft, W = 350 lb, R = 54.1 ft) or a different problem. Compute
Pr , ir , shock front velocity, arrival time, and positive phase duration using ANSYS and the
UFC-3-340-02 charts. Compare the results obtained using the two approaches in a tabular
format.

3. Model a surface burst using ANSYS. You may consider the problem solved in the class (height
of charge = 0 ft, horizontal stand-off distance = 54.1 ft, W = 350 lb) or a different problem.
Compute Ps , Pr , is , ir , to and ta using ANSYS and the UFC-3-340-02 charts. Compare the
results obtained using the two approaches in a tabular format.

4. Model a surface burst using ANSYS. Place a wall at a reasonable distance from the charge
(say 10 m). Consider a reasonable charge weight (say 1000 kg TNT). Say the size of wall is
10 m 10 m 400 mm. You can choose other dimensions as well. Calculate the pressure
history at the mid point of the front surface of the wall. Compare the pressure-history with
that obtained using the UFC-3-340-02 charts.

5. Repeat Problem 4 if the wall is replaced with a column of dimensions 10 m 400 mm 400
mm.

6. Compare the pressure histories and clearing time from problems 4 and 5.
