Introduction to IRC

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a multi-user,

multi-channel chatting system.
Imagine sitting in front of your computer
and "talking" through typed messages with
either one person or many other people
from all over the Internet, all in real time!

IRC is based on a client-server model.

You run a client program on your own computer
which connects you to a server computer on the
Internet.
These servers link to many other servers to make
up an IRC network, which transport messages
from one user (client) to another.
In this manner, people from all over the world
can talk to each other live and simultaneously.

: What Are Mailing Lists?

A mailing list is basically a group of people who

share a common interest (usually this is a large
group).
The members send messages to the mailing list,
that relate to the common interest, and these
messages are then distributed to everyone on the

A variation is to have a mailing list that is out-going
only. Companies use this type to send their
customers newsletters and update information.

An automatic mailing list server developed by Eric

Thomas for BITNET in 1986. When e-mail is addressed
to a LISTSERV mailing list, it is automatically broadcast
to everyone on the list. The result is similar to a
newsgroup or forum,
forum except that the messages are
transmitted as e-mail and are therefore available only to
individuals on the list.
Although LISTSERV refers to a specific mailing list
server, the term is sometimes used incorrectly to refer to
any mailing list server. Another popular mailing list
server is Majordomo, which is freeware.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a technology that

allows you to make voice calls using a broadband Internet
connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line.
Some VoIP services may only allow you to call other
people using the same service, but others may allow you
to call anyone who has a telephone number - including
local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers.
Also, while some VoIP services only work over your
computer or a special VoIP phone, other services allow
you to use a traditional phone connected to a VoIP
adapter.

VoIP (voice over IP - that is, voice delivered using the

Internet Protocol) is a term used in IP telephony for a
set of facilities for managing the delivery of voice
information using the Internet Protocol (IP).

In general, this means sending voice information in

digital form in discrete packets rather than in the
traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public
switched telephone network (PSTN)

to voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP)
networks because it is cheaper to carry voice traffic
over Internet Protocol (IP) networks than over
switched circuit networks.

In the future, IP telephony networks are expected

to enable innovative new multimedia services while
working seamlessly with legacy telephone
networks.
A VoIP network carries voice traffic cheaper than a
switched circuit telephone network because IP
telephony networks make better use of available
bandwidth.

In a public switched telephone network, for example, a

dedicated 64 kilobits per second (kbps) end-to-end circuit
is allocated for each call.
In a VoIP network
network, digitized voice data is highly
compressed and carried in packets over IP networks.
Using the same bandwidth, a VoIP network can carry
many times the number of voice calls as a switched circuit
network with better voice quality.
The savings realized in using VoIP networks are often
passed onto users in the form of lower costs.
