Purpose: The Tip-of-the-Iceberg

This project will require you to work independently and collaboratively, to recall information from
previous lectures and discussion, while also analyzing why events happened the way they
happened and how those events still have effects on today.
Much of this unit has been to get you to focus on the very important and often overlooked
perspective of the native people, the people being colonized; this assignment, however, will give
you a better understanding of the imperialists and why they made the choices they made.
I have attached a visual of an Iceberg Diagram. You will use this diagram to start organizing your
thoughts before you begin your fun Popplet activity. After looking at the Iceberg Diagram, what do
you know about icebergs? What do people mean when they say Thats just the tip of the iceberg?
If the tip of the iceberg is what people can see about the water line, what might the significance be
of the huge mass of ice below the waters surface?
You will not only begin to learn about and recall facts surrounding the Scramble for Africa, but
you will begin to think about how massively significant cause is as it relates to the Scramble.
.
Goal:
Over the course of three days, you will do the following:
Day 1: Research the facts surrounding the Scramble for Africa, begin filling out your Iceberg
Diagram, and review the facts with your partner.

following questions should be at the tip of your iceberg:

your chromebooks to creatively depict both the facts and the causes surrounding the Scramble for
Africa using Popplet.

Africa?

surrounding the Scramble for Africa using Popplet.
