-2nd TALK STATUS OF REMOTE SENSING IN THE

INDUSTRI IN MALAYSIA-

PREPARED FOR :

ASSOC PROF DR KHOIRI MOHD DIMYATI

LECTURER OF PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Talker : Dr Laili Nordin
Project : LBN Precision Farming Tech
Date /time of lecture : 10 august 2010 / 1430pm-1630pm
Title of lecture : Status of Remote Sensing In The Industri In Malaysia

Dr Laili Nordin is a former Remote Sensing expertise worked at MACRES

(Malaysia Centre Of Remote Sensing ) situated at former office at Jalan Tun Ismail,
Kuala Lumpur. He is one of senior and very experienced person that directly used
and applied the knowledge of RS in Malaysia. Currently he is conducting and
managing a company that used RS technology in Farming industry and many more.

MACRES was established in august 1988 currently known as Malaysian

Remote Sensing Agency under MOSTI. The HQ is situated at Kuala Lumpur and the
ground receiver station situated at Temerloh Pahang state. Currently, Remote
Sensing Malaysia is equipped with computer system for satellite data image
processing, geographic information system and global positioning system, satellite
ground receiving station for real time data acquisition, microwave remote sensing
laboratory remote sensing digital photographic laboratory and remote sensing data
archiving & retrieval centre. The objective, vision and mission of Malaysian Remote
Sensing Agency are achieved through the implementation of its two main
programmes: Research and Development; and Technical Services, with clearly
defined activities as research and development programme and technical service
programme. There are four core activities that MACRESS implement which is
research and development, data services, training services, and consultancy.

The main flow work of MACRES can be summarized such initially they
launched satellite ,variety of satellite in shape size function and etc. then from the
satellite the image is captured using various technics. After that from the capturing
image the data is being manipulate and analysize. There are satellite data that
MACRES provided such as Landsat, spot, radarsat, quickbird, ikonos, MODIS, OCM
and NOAA.

There are some geographic data or image data capturing using other
technology like LIDAR using airbone and radarsat using radar technology. Almost all
of data are distributed by private agency rather than government. The cost of
image data depend on their size and data resolution means that the smaller the
resolution the higher the prices. There are also some data categorized as restricted
and non restricted. For the public purpose the restricted data are prohibited to sell
to public.

For the final stage which is applying used of image data , the must be
considered which type ,resolution data that suite to the project purpose. In
addition GIS (geographical information system) is the software that ideal for RS
integrating project because its support all of image data. In simple way, RS is a
process to store and process image data, GIS is a support software that be
analyzing through it.

In Malaysia, RS technology have been applied in many field and sector

through various agency include government and private agency. The field that
involved such as agriculture, forestry, water resource, urban and rural planning,
geology, marine, environment, archeology, infrastructure development, biodiversity
and health. Currently the government agency that using RS/GIS is related to the
above field.
