Note

About the Bhaktivedanta Vidyapitha Overview charts of Srimad Bhagavatam

This document consist of the overview charts of all the 12 cantos of Srimad Bhagavatam, translated and
commented by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. We have tried to present the flow
of each canto within a flow chart spanning over one to four pages depending on the expanse of the canto.
These charts may be used as quick reference to get the flow of the various chapters of each canto, while
studying or while giving a presentation.
Our intention is to assist the readers of Srimad Bhagavatam in appreciating a full canto at a glance. This is an
attempt made to serve the Vaisnava community, as a part of our study of Srimad Bhagavatham at
Bhaktivedanta Vidhyapitha.
We have tried to present the Bhagavatam without any deviation. But in case of any ambiguity, please refer to
Srila Prabhupadas Srimad Bhagavatham and Sarartha Darsini commentary by Srila Visvanatha Chakravarti
Thakura, translated by HH Bhanu Swami. We hope that this attempt would be pleasing to all the Vaisnavas.

Features & Nomenclature of the Notes

For a better understanding of the flow of the contents of Srimad Bhagavatam, we have included the following
features in these charts
Connections between different cantos
Connections between different chapters of the individual cantos
The predominant theme of each canto as given by Srila Prabhupada and Srila Viswanatha
Chakravarthi Thakura [Sarartha Darshini tika translated by HH Bhanu Swami].
The questions of the inquirers (Saunakadi rsis, Parikhit maharaja, Vidura etc) and the answers by the
speakers (Suta Goswami, Sukadeva Goswami, Maitreya etc).
The branches of a flow chart give various sections in a canto that provide an easy understanding of
the flow of the chapter.
The first chart compares the different cantos of Srimad Bhagavatam with the different limbs of Lord's
transcendental body.
The Verse number of each verse is given in the format (SB) cc.ch.vr [cc Canto number. ; ch
Chapter number. ; vr Verse number]. It helps in locating the verse.

CANTO 2 At a Glance

Part A: 2.1-3 Superiority of Bhakti Yoga

Q1. What is the ultimate duty of every person, especially one

day, Kamsa heard unembodied voice that he would
be killed by Devakis 8th son. Kamsa tried to kill
Devaki & Vasudeva convinced him not to kill her,
by promising to give all her sons to Kamsa. Narada
informed Kamsa about the appearance of demigods
in Yadu dynasty, thus Kamsa killed 6 sons of
Devaki, imprisoned her & Vasudeva, & started
persecuting Yadus.
10.2: Baladeva entered Devakis as 7th child. Lord
ordered Yoga maya to transfer Him to Rohinis
womb, & told her to appear as daughter of
Yasoda. Lord entered Devakis womb as 8th child.

A2: Dhara & Drona prayed to Brahma to take part in the
pastimes of the Lord. To fulfil the benediction of Brahma,
Lord performed pastimes in Gokul, Dhara & Drona
appeared as Yasoda & Nanda. (Actually Drhara &
Drona entered the nitya siddha forms of Yasoda &
Nanda)
10.9: Parikshit was not pleased by the answer, so Sukadeva
told him Damodar Lila: When mother Yasoda was churning
yogurt, Krishna desired to drink milk. Yasoda put Krishna
down & went to save the boiling milk on stove. This
angered Krishna & broke the pot. Yasoda chased &
captured Krishna . Yasoda was not ale to bind Krishna, by
seeing her hard labor, Lord agreed to be bound. Lord is the
Supreme controller, but he comes under the control of His
devotees. Brahm,, iva, & Lakshmi, did not obtain, such
mercy as received by Yaod.(It is wrong to think that
Yasoda is sadhana siddha, who got boon from Brahma.
Nanda & Yasoda are nitya siddhas). Krishna was bound to
the mortar, then he observed the Yamala Arjuna trees, who
in their former birth were sons of Kuvera, they were cursed
by Narada.
Q3. What abominable activity they did, that Narada
became angry at them? (10.10.1)
A3. Two sons of Kuvera were enjoying in Mandakini with
young girls, Narada went there, but they could not cover
their bodies. To show mercy to them, Narada cursed
them. Narada described the dangers of wealth & benefits
of poverty. They became trees in gokul, Lord uprooted
the trees by dragging with his mortar & delivered them.
They offered prayers to the Lord.

vendor pastime, by seeing the disturbances in gokul,
elder gopas decided & moved to Vrindavan. At
Vrindavan Krishna & Balarama started tending
calves. Killing of Vatsasura & Bakasura.
10.12: Cowhered boys entered the body of serpent
demon Aghasura, to save them Krishna killed
Aghasura. When the demon was killed demigods
offered prayers to Krishna, Seeing all this Brahma
was astonished. Cowherd boys disclosed this
incident of killing Aghasura, after one year in vraja,
as if it had taken place on that very day.
Q4. Why the killing of Aghsura was not discussed
for one year (10.12.40-43)
A4: 10.13: After killing Aghasura, Krishna was taking
lunch with the cowherd boys. Then their calves went
away, Krishna went out to search for the calves.
Brahma saw Krishna killing Aghasura & decided to
test Him, thus Brahma took away the boys and calves
to another place. Krishna understood the work of
Brahma & expanded himself as calves & boys. The
affection of cowherd men and cows increased
towards their boys & calves. After one year Brahma
came back & was bewildered by seeing two sets of
boys & calves. Calves & boys transformed into
Vishnu forms. Brahma offered prayers to Krishna.
After that Krishna came back to Vraja along with
cowherd boys, who sang about killing of Aghasura.
Usually parents have more love for their own
children, even if others children have better
qualities. Hearing that the parents of Vraja had
more love for Krsna, who was the son of another,
than for their own sons, Parikshit inquired, Q5.
How cowherd women developed such love for Lord
Ka more than their sons.? (10.14.49)
A5: The dearness of children, wealth, etc is due to
the dearness of the self. But Krsna is the highest
object of Love, the greatest love is felt for Him,
which was shown by the Vraja-gopis.
10.15: After reaching pauganda, Krsna took charge
of tending cows. Krishna killed Dhenukasura. Cows
and cowherd boys lost their lives by driking poisoned
water, Krsna revived them by his glance. Krishna
chastised Kaliya to purify the river.

Govardhan. When Vrajavasis followed Krishnas orders,
Indra became angry & attacked Vraja. Krishna lifted
Govardhan hill & relieved the distress of Vrajavasis. Indra
was ashamed & offered prayers to the Lord along with
Surabhi. 10.28: Krishna saved Nanda from Varunas

10.29-33: Rasalila- Krishna played flute & attracted the
minds of Gopis. Gopis went to the forest but Krishna
asked them to return back to home, by explaining the
