The Raiders
prepare for
10-day trip
to East Coast
By Josh Dubow
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ALAMEDA After pulling off a successful 10-day stay on

the East Coast last year, the Oakland Raiders are ready to do
it again.
The Raiders flew to upstate New York on Friday to begin
their extended road trip that features road games at Buffalo
and Miami with a week of practice in Florida in between.
Coach Jack Del Rio had his team spend a week in Florida
between games at Jacksonville and Tampa Bay last year and
the Raiders ended up sweeping that road trip. With that in
mind, the team is set to do it again.
You have a chance to maybe come together a little bit as
a squad but it has to do with going there and playing good
football, Del Rio said. Being on point, taking care of
business, thats what allows it to be a good thing. I think
you have to do that, but the process is good, where youre
not flying coast to coast.
Youre minimizing the amount of that travel. I dont
know if anybody does it more than us this year, but were
called on to do a lot of traveling this year so to help miti-
gate that this year, we think its good for our organization.
Much of the work for this trip is handled by the behind-
the-scenes staff led by equipment manager Bob Romanski.
The players and coaches will pack an extra bag that will be
sent straight to Sarasota, Florida, where the Raiders will
practice at the IMG Academy next week before heading to
Miami for the weekend.
The Raiders have perhaps the leagues most grueling trav-
el schedule with seven games in the Eastern and Central time
zone because of matchups with the NFC and AFC East this
season and one designated home game being played in
Mexico City against New England.
Oakland would have had the second-most miles to travel
this season if they had headed home between games. There
are other benefits beyond one less cross-country trip.
The advantage is, one, you dont have to wake up earlier
because of traffic or drive, you just walk downstairs, quar-
terback Derek Carr said. And two, you get to eat every meal
with your teammates. Its almost like another camp where
were all together. Were all doing things together. Guys, if
they dont have their families, theyre going out to eat
together and having dinner. Theyre going out together and
hanging out in the room together. Those kinds of things.
Carr will fly his wife and kids to Florida to spend the week
with them. But other players will be solo, which allows for
more time to build relationships with teammates.
Everyone was living in the same confined place, run-
ning back DeAndre Washington said. The guys definitely
bonded. We bond usually, but being outside and not being
able to go home and see our families definitely brought our
guys a lot closer.
NOTES: CB David Amerson (foot) and CB Gareon Conley
(shin) are out for the game and S Karl Joseph (groin) is
doubtful. ... LB Cory James (knee), LB Marquel Lee (ankle),
LB Nicholas Morrow (ankle), RT Marshall Newhouse (foot)
and P Marquette King (right groin) are questionable.

wouldnt change in terms of the bones of it, but you intro-

duce some elements that create a regional draw and destina-
tion.
Until recently, the councils main focus had been possi-
bly replacing the aging recreation center with a new multi-
use community center. Initial cost estimates, which ranged
up to $27 million, led the council to postpone any decision
as it faced other pertinent infrastructure upgrades to its
levee and sewage treatment system. Now, staff and a council
subcommittee are slated to return in December with a pro-
posal to hire a consultant and consider options at the park.
Vice Mayor Sam Hindi, who also serves on the subcom-
mittee, said its about starting a broader dialogue on an
important service Foster City offers to the community.
I think the consensus was to kind of explore this area as
a blank sheet of paper, not just the footprint of the current
recreation center, Hindi said. We could bring components
that the community currently lacks and those components
could add value and enhance the quality of life and the expe-
rience of living and working in Foster City.
Some ideas floated during the study session were to con-
sider making room for a unique restaurant or wine bar, and
possibly seeing if the local Hillbarn Theatre would like to
partner at a multi-use site, Hindi said.
Were seeing a change in demographics, and in the needs
and interests of the community, Liu said.
The next steps will be for staff and the council subcom-
mittee to refine a request for proposals and return to the
council to consider spending $300,000 to hire a consult-
ant. The other option was to spend up to $200,000 on a
consultant to only review options for the multi-purpose
facility. Liu and Hindi noted the citys earlier public out-
reach on the recreation center will be included and
$100,000 has been allocated toward the failing roof to
maintain the facility in the interim.
This could also fit into the citys goal next fiscal year of
taking a comprehensive look at its entire system through a
Parks Master Plan. With 24 parks, Liu said she hopes the
community will come together to discuss how to differenti-
ate and prioritize offerings at the numerous sites.
The master plan will help re-envision the park system to
help both fiscally and financially, and environmentally, be
more sustainable. I truly believe that people come to this
community, move to this community because of the park
system and I want to make sure that our resources are used in
the most responsible manner to prioritize, Liu said.
Theres a lot of things we can consider to add diversity to
our parks system.

Jack Bannon, co-star of

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK Jack Bannon, who played the genial and

raffish assistant city editor Art Donovan on Lou Grant,
has died. His stepdaughter, Molly Allen,
says Bannon died Wednesday in Coeur
dAlene, Idaho, where he had lived since
the mid-1990s. He was 77.
Bannon was a regular on the acclaimed
newspaper drama, which starred Ed Asner
in the title role and aired on CBS from
1977 to 1982.
The crusading journalists of the fiction-
Jack Bannon al Los Angeles Tribune were mostly high-
spirited and sometimes volatile. But Art
Donovan stood out as a calming, fastidious presence (as dis-
played in the opening titles as he carefully arranges his suit
jacket on a hanger which he hooks on the coat stand).
Before Lou Grant, Bannon appeared in such series as
Heres Lucy, Daniel Boone, Mannix, Kojak and
The Rockford Files.
He later co-starred on the short-lived 1983 ABC medical
drama Trauma Center.
Both Bannons parents were actors. His mother, Bea
Benaderet, was a regular on The Beverly Hillbillies, which
she left to star in another long-running sitcom, Petticoat
