About the speaking test Part 1

The speaking test lasts about 10 to 12 minutes. You take the test with another candidate (in pairs). There may be
two examiners in the room. One examiner talks to you and the other examiner listens to you. Both examiners give
you marks.

The examiners introduce themselves and then one examiner asks you and your partner to say your names and spell
them. This examiner then asks you questions about yourself, your daily life and interests etc.

Example of speaking test

Good morning / afternoon / evening. Can I have your mark sheets please?

Im Janet and this is Mari. Mari is just going to listen to us.

Now, whats your name? Thank you.

And whats your name? Thank you.

Whats your surname? How do you spell it? Thank you.

And, whats your surname? How do you spell it? Thank you.

Where do you live / Where do you come from?

Do you work or are you a student?

What do you do / What do you study?

Do you have English lessons? Do you like them?

Do you study English at school? Do you like it?

The examiner will then ask you one or more questions from the following list:-

Do you enjoy studying English? Why / Why not?


or
Do you like studying English? Why / Why not?

Do you think that English will be useful for you in the future?
or
Will you use English in the future?

What did you do yesterday evening?


or
Did you do anything yesterday evening? What?

What did you do last weekend?


or
Did you do anything last weekend? What?

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

What do you like to do in your free time?
You will achieve higher marks if you reply with more information than just saying yes or no. For example:-

Where do you live? Torrox


Where do you live? I live in Torrox pueblo.

Do you think that English will be useful for you in the future? Yes
Do you think that English will be useful for you in the future? Yes, I think English will be useful for me in the
future because I want to travel to countries where English is spoken.

Lets practise. Answer the following questions:-

1 Do you enjoy studying English? (Explain why you do or dont enjoy it)

2 Do you think that English will be useful for you in the future? (Give some examples of how it will be useful)

3 What did you do yesterday evening? (It doesnt have to be true just use lots of vocabulary past simple)

4 What did you do last weekend? (Think of something interesting to tell the examiner)

5 What do you enjoy doing in your free time? (Give two or three different examples and say why you like it)
