weaknesses of the current collection, a
schools improvement plan and goals, the
instructional needs of students, and
resource needs of teachers. I was able to
get an idea about general costs, finding
that many resources were much more
costly than I originally thought. The
SLMS has to think about so much more
than books. They are also responsible for
software, equipment, subscriptions, AV
materials, and other supplies, as well as
funding for specific projects. I learned
that with careful planning, and
forethought, it is possible to use funds
wisely.

Facilitates Floor Plan Through this project, I was able to gain

MEDT 6461 professional knowledge that will enable
Program Administrator me to design a space that is patron-
centered and flexible in order to
accommodate learners and users specific
needs as the program administrator.
Every media center is different; the space
is different, the furniture and fixtures are
different, and the needs of the clients are
different. This project allowed me the
opportunity to think in new and creative
ways, with the potential needs of the
clients in mind. I have to think about all
the potential uses of the space. I learned
that flexibility is important. Clients need
to be able to make the space their own
when possible, so it can fit their
individual needs. I was able to identify
ways to make space more usable and
mobile, while providing more varied
work spaces. I also learned the
importance of making materials easily
accessible.
(AASL 5.3, 3.1 PSC/NCATE 3.c, 7.d )

Student & Staff Survey Through this project, I was able to gain
Evaluations MEDT 6461 professional knowledge that will enable
Instructional Partner, me to do needed research as an
Program Administrator, instructional partner, program
& Leader administrator, and leader. This research
will give me information needed to tailor
my program to meet the needs of diverse
users and learners.
What I learned most through this
process was the power of feedback.
Oftentimes the media center is used
regularly by only a few classrooms, but
for most teachers they only visit for
checkout, even though there is so much
more to offer. Surveys and evaluations
help SLMS see how they can improve
their services. I found that new teachers
have very different needs than veterans,
and that often people just dont know
about the awesome resources and
services available. I was also able to see
how important communication is. While
the media specialist was more than able
and available for collaboration, teachers
did not know about, or take advantage of
her expertise.

to see the importance of constant
collection evaluation. By knowing where
the strengths and weaknesses lie, the
SLMS can use funds responsibly.

important is the ability to communicate

understanding where funding goes and
why it is important to continue support.

those needs. Doing so, meant that the
materials found and resources created
were immediately useful for the client.
This project also allowed me the
opportunity to practice evaluating
resources. I wanted to make sure that
everything I shared was relevant, based
on client needs and standards being
covered, but also that they would be
engaging for students. I see this type of
project being something I would want to
engage in regularly as a SLMS.
