Lucinda Erbachs Professional (3 5 year) Growth Plan
Membership in Library Associations and Attendance at Professional Conferences
I will join and attend annual state-level VAASL conference. After several years, I will offer to make presentations and/or head a committee. I will attend annual regional VAASL conferences. After a couple of years, I will offer to make presentations and/or head a committee. I will encourage/coordinate and attend district librarian meetings at least one annually. When it fits into my personal budget or the district will pay for it, I will join the AASL.
Reading of Professional Publications
It is important to read professional publications to stay abreast of trends, get new ideas, read reviews and learn about opportunities for collaborating/networking with other professionals. Publications I plan to regularly read/review: Newsletters from VAASL, School Library Journal, eSchool News, Teacher-Librarian
Exploration of Professional Internet Resources
Through reading professional publications and networking with other professionals, I hope to discover resources beyond what already exists/is available to me in the library. Certainly, AASL and VAASL have a lot of professional resources with which I will continue to refer. The above mentioned eSchool News is a free on-line resource that I will regularly explore.
Provision of Professional Development Opportunities for Other Educators
I will request that I be allowed a 5 minute block at each monthly faculty meeting to highlight programs/collection resources. I will recommend that I be allowed time during New Teacher Orientation to help new teachers navigate available on-line resources and be available to them throughout the year for check-ins. I will offer to host staff development sessions whenever there are teacher professional development (PD) days. These sessions will depend on the theme of the PD, what teachers have shown an interest in and/or what the principal would like to see. They could include collaboration ideas, copyright and other ethical issues, and use of on-line and/or collection resources.
Establishing Connections with Other Libraries and Strengthening Cooperation
Among Library Colleagues I will encourage/coordinate at least one annual meeting of all district librarians. I will encourage/coordinate at least three meetings with all same level librarians within my district. I will encourage/offer my assistance with an open email/phone call policy to any of my peers to share ideas and ask questions. I will establish a Google share file that is specifically meant for the sharing of lessons. I will create a forum for us to share district specific questions/help. I want to create a way to easily share knowledge of unusual items we hold in our collections, like book sets and gadgets. I would like to co-plan and host professional learning sessions with library colleagues for teachers. I hope to establish a book exchange program with the local public library to share resources and extend programs for after school and during the summer. Participation and Collaboration as a Member of a Social and Intellectual Network of Learners Through relationships with district peers and participation in VAASL, I plan to continue my professional growth. This includes participating in intellectual discussions about policies (local, state and federal) affecting school libraries, reading and discussing research on best practices for school libraries and attending meetings and conferences that provide opportunities for open exchange and growth.
Practice and Modeling of Ethical Principals of the Profession
Through my 5-minute faculty meeting discussions, mentoring of new teachers, regular participation in grade-level meetings, and presentations during professional development days, I hope to inform my colleagues about best, ethical practices for their use and how they can teach/model these for their students as well. I will teach and offer to co-teach lessons that include modeling of best, ethical practices to students. These best practices will include crediting sources, digital footprints and smart use of digital resources. I will model through collection development of the library and management of student data the promotion of intellectual freedoms. I will encourage, through a 5-minute faculty meeting presentation and to new teacher mentees, teachers practicing intellectual freedoms in their own classrooms.
Use of Evidence-Based, Action Research to Collect Data to Use to Improve
Practice At the beginning of each school year I will review school data (SOL results, reading program results, etc.), consulting with grade level coaches when possible, to begin the process of choosing topics to teach. From there, I will present my ideas to grade levels, and with their help, come up with a plan to teach in the library appropriate topics/skills in library lessons. I will use a variety of assessments, to include formal, summative assessments of student learning, self-reflection, and student and teacher feedback to determine effectiveness of lessons and/or programs.
