Karma- Why Pandavas went to Hell?

In the story of Mahabharata,Pandavas, the good souls who followed the right path had Lord Krishna
in every

journey of their life. It is obvious fact that who has Lord on their side will reach Heaven and the
wrong

doers, The Kauravas will reach Hell.

But here the outcome was different. There was a twist in tale. Pandavas ended up in Hell while
Kauravas

ended up in Heaven!!!

How can this be Justifiable?

The Pandavas who went through all miseries in this world, lost their rights to rule, finally fought
against the

their cousins Kauravas and in the end what they get is HELL!!!

The Kauravas who oppressed their cousins, usurped their kingdom and their rights, lived happily and
in the end

get killed for the wrongdoings finally end up in HEAVEN!!!

So what is the moral? Do bad deeds you end up in heaven, and you be righteous and good, you will
end up in

hell???

So here is the story which specifies why we need to earn profits of karma...

The Pancha Pandavas ruled the Hastinapura dynasty for 36 yrs and earned a good name and fame.
They established

a righteous Kingdom and one day finally they all decided that the time has come for them to
renounce the world.

So the five Pandavas and thier common wife,The Draupadi left to the path of liberation.

For this purpose they all climbed the Meru Mountain which leads them to the Swarga Loka.
Unfortunately on their

way, they slipped and died one by one.

The first to die was Draupadi, she was imperfect because she preferred Arjuna over her other
husbands.Then it

was Sahadeva, imperfect because he was smug about his knowledge.Followed by Nakula, imperfect
because he was

arrogant about his good looks. Then fell Arjuna, imperfect because he was always jealous of other
archers.And

then, Bhima, imperfect because he was a glutton.

Only the eldest pandava, Yudhisthira, reached the door of Swarga Loka carried on Lord Indra's
chariot.On

reaching Heaven he did not find either his virtuous brothers or his wife Draupadi. Instead he saw
Duryodhana,

Bheesma, Dronacharya etc and their sons.

He wanted an explanation from Lord Yama,The lord of death.

Lord Yama explained,

Because the Kauravas died as warriors are supposed to, on the battlefield. This earned them so
much merit and

credit that it wiped out all their debts.

Yudhisthira demanded to know where his brothers and his wife were. He was then taken to Hell.

Lord Yama explained,

They are experiencing the reactions of their actions.

Yudhisthira was astonished.

Lord Yama smiled and said,

This is temporary. Once the debt has been repaid, they will join the Kauravas in Swarga. You too
had to

experience Hell for the one and only white lie you spoke in your lifetime

Yudhisthira loyally meet his brothers, but the sight and sound of gore and blood horrified him.
Though

initially he was tempted to flee, he mastered himself and remained after hearing the voices of his
beloved

brothers and Draupadi calling out to him, asking him to stay with them in their misery. Yudhisthira
decided to

remain, ordering the divine charioteer to return. He preferred to live in hell with good people than in
a
heaven of his enemies. Eventually this turned out to be another illusion to test him and also to
enable him to

atone for his sin of telling a white lie.

Flashback........

(It is said that Yudhisthira never spoke a lie. Once he did it, in Mahabharat war it was felt that Guru

Dronacharya should be killed as he would not allow pandavas to win.

On the 15th day of the Mahbhrata war, Drona got instigated by King Dhritarastra's remarks of
being a traitor.

He used the Brahmadanda against the Pandavas. Brahmadanda was a spiritual divine weapon that
contained the

powers of seven greatest sages of Hinduism. But Drona did not impart this knowledge either to
Arjuna nor to

Ashwatthama. Thus, he proved to be unconquerable on the 15th day of war.

Observing this, Lord Krishna devised a plan to bring down the invincible Drona. Krishna knew that it
was not

possible to defeat Drona when he had bow and arrow in his hands. Krishna also knew that Drona
loved his son

Ashwatthama very dearly. So, Krishna suggested to Yudhisthira and other Pandava brothers that, if
he were

convinced that his son was killed on the battlefield, then Drona would get dejected to such an extent
that he

would lay down all his arms on the ground and it would be easier to kill him.
In order to find a way out, Krishna suggested Bhima to kill an elephant by name Ashwatthama and
claim to Drona

that he has killed Drona's son Ashwathama. Following this plan, Bhima located and killed an
elephant named

Ashwatthama, i.e. the same name as Drona's son. He then loudly proclaimed that he had slain
Ashwatthama, so as

to make Drona think that his son was dead.

Drona however, did not believe Bhima's words and approached Yudhisthira. Drona knew of
Yudhisthira's firm

adherence to Dharma and that he would never ever utter a lie. When Drona approached Yudhisthira
and questioned

him as to whether his son was truly slain in the battle by Bhima, Yudhisthira responded with the
cryptic

Sanskrit phrase "Ashwatthama hathaha iti, narova kunjarova" "- ,

..." meaning 'Ashwatthama is dead.

But, I am not certain whether it was a human or an elephant'.)

While Yudhisthira was remembering this past events,Lord Indra and Lord Krishna appeared before
him and told him

that his brothers were already in Heaven.

This story is a moral that no one can escape from bondage without balancing our Karma.

Even Lord Krishna had to suffer the consequences.Lord of Lords was bound by Karma.
Mahabharata, the historical battle fought in Kurukshetra resulted in the death of all the hundred
sons of King

Dhritarashtra and Gandhari. Lord Krishna is said to have visited Mother Gandhari to offer his
condolence. In a

fit of rage and sorrow, Mata Gandhari cursed Bhagwan Krishna that just as the Kaurava dynasty had
ended

fighting with each other, similarly the Yaduvanshi dynasty would end fighting and killing each other.
Mother

Gandhari felt that Sri Krishna didn't play a fair role in putting an end to the war. Lord Krishna happily

accepted the curse.

According to a folklore, Sage Vishwamitra and Sage Narada once visited the city of Dwarka to meet
Lord Krishna.

A few children of Lord Krishna dressed up Samba (Son of Sri Krishna and Jambavati) as a pregnant
woman and

asked the visiting sages to foretell what kind of a child Samba will bear. Feeling insulted, the sages
cursed

that Samba will give birth to an Iron rod which in turn will be instrumental in the fall of the
Yaduvanshi

Dynasty. The very next day, Samba gave birth to an iron rod. Lord Krishna's sons crushed it into
powder and

threw the bottle in the sea. However, one day the bottle was washed up the shore and the
powdered iron took

form of an arrow. Lord Krishna could foresee everything and as a last resort to save his Dynasty,
prohibited
liquor in the city of Dwarka. Eventually, the Yadavas became drunk and killed each other with iron
rods. None

of them survived.

Lord Krishna went to a forest near Somnath in Bhalka Tirth to meditate. Jara, a hunter mistook the
lord's feet

to be a deer and accidentally shot him with the arrow. This arrow was the same which was made
from the cursed

iron rod

Unless we perform... unless we indulge in good karma all the time... our manifesting the human
form is a

disgrace! In present times... ... the Dark Age it sometimes becomes difficult to distinguish human
beings from

animals! We sometimes stoop so low that the very purpose of a soul atman manifesting a human
form seemed lost!

In sacred Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavatham of Hinduism Lord Krishna exhorts all human beings to
exert karma at

their best! If we truly desire manifesting destiny ever in life... we need controlling our karma... the
base

input! It is by controlling our karma... finally overcoming it... human beings reached the stage of

enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) forever.

Just like a clever buisnessman puts his earnings and hardship in those areas where he is sure to gain
profits, likewise we need to surrender to the Lord and do our service in such a way that we gain
profits of good

karma and attain liberation from bondage.

Let Goodness prevail in thoughts and actions and let goodness prevail to serve mankind.

Good definition...done very well to be understood by them who are eager to know about 'Bharatiya
Sanskriti'...

every Holy books preaches of goodness and ways of being a good human... I think Bhagvad Geetha,
Ramayan,

Mahabharatha.....describes everything concerned about Human life with reasons and explanations,
what is going

on and what comes upon is all for a reason...nothing happens without a reason, this is well
explained....the

only fault is we people do not read it well or I believe do not try to understand what our ancestors
have

predicted well before....

Only when Yudhishthir realizes that compassion is a greater virtue than 'truth', he sees the universe
as it is
- a playground of the divine. He than sees the maya and lila of the Lord functioning for the delight of
the

universal spirit. There was no heaven, no hell, no karma, no bonds. Just divine lila.

A nice blog with mythological example. When the story was written, knowledge was limited. Can any
one walk to

hell or heaven. But pandavas did walked to through Himalayas, where where hell or heaven supposed
to be. Is it

so? So far could any one locate, location of our imagination. Presently rockets and men reached
highest point of

the sky,may be more in days to come. So far nothing is located. Hell or heaven are nothing but bad
and good

which keep happening in our day to day life. All these are our suffering during our life time. A
thought only.

Just as we believe there is good and bad,day and night, god and devil why not heaven and hell. Earth
is a

mixture of all these if we perceive it this way.Anyway thanks for sharing your view.
