P-V-T DATA CORRELATIONS

PHASE RULE

When the state or phase condition of a system is defined by fixing the

required number of properties, all other properties are fixed.

The Phase Rule gives the number of independent variables, or degree of

freedom for a system:

F = N + 2
F = number of degree of freedom or independent variables (exp: T, P,

mole fractions, etc)

N = number of components

= number of phases

Examples:

Number of component = 1, Phase = 1 F=1-1+2=2

All other properties are fixed if we fix 2 variables (T and P, or T and v, or P

and h, or P and density, etc)

Detail Equation of State will be discussed later.
