When viewing Weijers body of work, one has an immediate impression of an artist in command of conveying his vision,
realizing truth because it is so honest, communicating universally because it embodies us all.
Weijers has found his line in triumphant harmony by combining gures and subjects in like manner with intersecting consistency throughout each piece,
allowing the viewer to consume the work as a single image, whole unto itself.
His use of coloring populates negative space in a subtle manifestation of form accentuating the power of a mature line.
And though there is clarity, still there is mystery as the viewer breaks down and consumes individual components for detail,
then again brings them together in relation so that a comprehension of the overall image is readily portrayed.
The artist's work reects an understanding of the time which we live where graphic imagery is pervasive in daily life.
Yet it employs rened attributes of classicism that recall a period of appreciation for the art of drawing.
Weijers has now reached a renement many artists aspire to achieve and this observer is eager to see what comes indeed.

Introduction
Weijers translates his views on contemporary issues by painting,

through photography, and composing music.
"My personal quest is to nd the balance between tranquility and tension."

"Painting is the ultimate medium for communicating with myself and others."
In painting, his work conveys an intuitive visual language where interlacing signs
and shapes combine by relational substance to create a mystical place.
Using a rened drawing technique he has successfully liberated the line from
traditional pattern. Figures and elements are thus rendered in their natural state,
one belonging to the other with consistent symbolism that allow the viewer a
ready grasp of their message quality and orientation. Thereby inviting viewers
to consume individual components for detail and to bring them together in
relation so that a comprehension of the overall image is portrayed.
Complementing the subject matter is a specic color palette that effectively

evident in the media he favors. Weijers mainly works on wooden panels and his
work could be described as multi-layered mix media. Through the years he has
matured his painting style by means of materials used, technique and concept.
His high levels of productivity continuously generate a further developing ow
of work. His paintings are on exhibit in a wide range galleries and venues in the
Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
By way of photography, Weijers is keenly adept at capturing the essence of

subject, communicating again his conceptual vision of social and political issues.
Various series such as 'Throw away your TV!', 'It's a stars & stripes circus out there',
'Get Connected with Phonarchy', 'Spray-com 2006', 'LA drive-by shooting',
'Target rush-hour' and 'Fixx the game', intend to bring forth underlying sincerity
relating to the desired theme. His photographic work is shown in galleries in
the Netherlands, Germany and the United States.
As a musician Weijers writes, arranges, produces and releases musical projects

using the name Global Frequency. The recordings of these projects are realized
in corporation with an international group of musical friends mainly in the
Netherlands and the United States. During the past years his musical activities
resulted in the release of ten CD/DVD's. The projects the Break of Dawn,
D-Mans' left wing & painkiller sessions, Trippin' in the temple of doom, Get
Wet, Throw away your TV!, Evo-so-lu-tion, Sounds of Vision and the DVD
Tabasco Tabernacle are some examples of his urge to musically express himself.
Weijers lives and works at his studio in the historic center of Schiedam and for
bigger projects he works out at his studio in the center of Rotterdam.

Creatively involving artists and musicians within the development process of his
projects, had already become common practice for Weijers. Within his earlier
Global Frequency Music projects and releases from the year 2001 on, he involved
a vast group of Dutch and American musicians. His background and long years of
experience as a creative director within an international communication environ-
ment, generated the basic ingredients to work with a large variety of creative
minds. He not only learned to work with creative people and to achieve the
aim for results in a creative sense, more important, he achieved to keep these
creative individuals connected to his projects.

Preface
Ron Weijers usually pushes his audience around, making them change their mind
just when they think they have his art gured out. He continues to put stringent
demands on himself as an artist and on his audience, not merely as viewers, but as
participants in his creative act. Constantly searching for visual predicaments,
Weijers complicates them still further, thereby afrming as an ethical decision the
refusal to accept any one approach as the only possible solution.
Born in Limburg in the far south of the Netherlands in 1960, Weijers enjoyed a
troubled and restless childhood that fused his creative processes to a maximum.
As a youngster he moved towards The Hague in order to get involved within the
Dutch music scene. He became involved in several bands and enjoyed a sparkling
time gigging around. during these years he developed his skills in graphic design
and advertising. In 1985 he terminated his musical career suddenly and moved to
the island of Crete in Greece. For a short while he worked in Heraklion as a graphic
designer but pretty soon he developed his rst advertising company in Greece,
together with Andreas Zetos. A fast moving development of the Greek market and
its needs in the wider elds of marketing and advertising, soon stimulated the

Page 9 his creative advertising company Blue Syndicate ltd. Mainly fashion industries as
his eld of working. For several years he mainly worked on the development of
brands like Diesel, Replay, Union Trade and Smiths American. In these years he
travelled all over the world and even more to the United States. His personal
favorite New York gained a special place in his life and his long-time friendship
with the Paul Metrakos played a role of importance in his relation with the City.
Weijers always concidered New York a kind of a machine that could recharge his
creative batteries and he took every opportunity to do so. Partly he developed
his later Global Frequency Music project with the support of New York based
musicians and for sure he absorbed the art and gallery scene of New York like a kind
of a duplicate Sponge Bob. In 2000 Weijers terminated his activities in Greece and
moved back to Holland in order to settle down as an artist. He had some doubt
about Holland and researched a move towards New York. In the end he decided to
settle in the historic center of Schiedam, close to the city of Rotterdam. By the
time he permanently established his base in Schiedam he had matured as a widely
orinted and skilled craftsman in the arts. These skills together with his knowledge
in the eld of advertising, marketing, public relation, graphic design, music, photo-
graphy amongst others, created a perfect base to further develop a solid career
within the artworld.
From 2000 on he developed a wide range of projects as a photographer and he
permanently worked out on the development of his drawing and painting concepts.
His work has been inspired by painters like the Austrian artist Oskar Kokoschka due
to his intense expressionistic portraits, the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch whose
intense psychological aspects and themes transferred within his work and the Irish-
-born British gurative painter Francis Bacon, known for his bold, graphic and
emotionally raw imagery. With his strongly graphic based background Weijers was
bound to develop a concept related to his creative roots. Weijers developed a

mixed media concept and style of his own, including his typical graphite linework,
acryllic paints, oil pastels, the use of opaques and the in all kind of variations
showing up of collage underlayers. Over the years, obviously some degree of ex-
perimenting became unavoidable and the development of 3D objects based on a
wide range of collagematerial became reality. An important development that
took place within his development, was the period of almost four years, that he
used the monument the Korenbeurs in the historic city center of Schiedam as his
studio. During this stage he started to produce monumental works of art and that
tasted for more. The freedom in motion he gained by working on larger canvasses
contributed strongly to his process. His permanent battle between guration and
abstraction, nally reached a state of satisfaction for Weijers who always had been
ghting his ways towards the abstract side of the street.
Over the years Weijers also maintained a good relation with his background in
organisational skills. The organisation of exhibition projects, involving groups of
artists still today is one of these activities he needs to be involved in. He developed
the 10dence art collective in order to do so in a stated manner. His professional

Page 11 In 2009, Weijers was accepted as a member of the prestigious art foundation Arti et
Amicitiae in Amsterdam.
Weijers is showing his work internationally within ten to twelve venues yearly and
there is no indication at all from his end that he is slowing it down.
In general one could say thet his work is his life and he needs to do whatever he is
doing. One of his favourite phrases expresses it all...

The process
The term mixed media art signies the use of different media in the creation of
one work. This can allow for great versatility uncovering the muliple layers that
characterize the process of working with mixed media. The character of mixed
media contributes to its popularity within the contemporary art world, as it can
blend well with conceptual visual formulation. The end result can be less a direct
visual statement than a way to bring irony into play as a comment on a visual
statement. Mixed media art is frequently used to express political views or social
statements.
Common media combinations include oil paint, graphite, textiles, or sculpture.
However, mixed media pieces can include almost anything. For example, found
objects can be used in conjunction with traditional artist media. The different
combinations of media and varying composition, color, and texture can all be used
for interesting effect. It has been said, Art is not a thing; it is a way.

The 10dence art collective
In december 2008, Weijers founded the 10dence art collective. A wide range of
creative individuals working in a variety of disciplines subsequently became aflia-
ted and associated with the art collective. By means of concept, the 10dence
collective was proled by Weijers as a multidisciplinary nucleus for innovative
creative endeavors, where the participants of the collective, in collaboration with
a wide range of creative participants, generate artistic productions which en-
compass an unprecedented panoply of works of art embracing painting, drawing,
photography, video, literature, sculpture and music, and the collective surveys the
cross-current of activities that constituted the artistic output.
As a contemporary collective, focusing on bringing together innovative creative
individuals from around the world, the 10dence art collective aims on the diversity
of the group and highlights and respects the individuality of all the artists involved.
Aim of the 10dence art collective is to celebrate all the various attributes of this
eclectic group through the development of concepts and exhibition projects.

Due to his involvement within the boards of the art foundations Kunstwerkt and
Music Inspired Art, Weijers in the meantime developed successful group-exhibition
projects like PPJazz 2007 2008 and the unique twee(2)strijd voor 12 exhibition
project, involving 24 artists and creating the creative challenge for them to produce
a work of art in teams. Within these projects he clearly developed the artistic

connections and relations that would form the basic ingredients for the foundation
of the 10dence art collective in December 2008. Over the years Weijers developed
numerous projects like the Labyrinth and Worlds of Abstraction with the artists Kees
Okx, Hlne van Dongen and Nikolaj Dielemans, like for instance the Vortex series,
the Voynich project, the E-Motion Pictures project, the Covert Ops project, the
Laid-back series, the Pulp Vision reections and the ReTart project.
Within the concepts developed by the 10dence art collective, the reection of artistic,
technical, mental, social, environmental, psycholical, literair, photographic, political,
cinematographic, graphical, architectural, musical, racial, religious, visual and
commercial issues amongst others is setting the expressive tone. Shortly, there are
no restrictions to the ways of creative expression by the collective tolerated regar-
ding the message to be send out to the spectator. A group of artistic minds, working
towards the realization of their artistic ideals with no strings attached whatsoever.

Covert Ops uncovered project
The 'Covert Ops' uncovered project transfers an attempt to reect and to revive
debate and dialogue on cover-up issues and scandals as they occur worldwide.
A cover-up is an attempt, whether successful or not, to conceal evidence of wrong-
doing, error, incompetence or other embarrassing information. Weijers questions
traditional social power structures using familiar characters that challenge viewers
to position themselves on multiple sides of an implied conict. The loosely narrative
images offer no conclusions as to which parties actually are the defenders or those
being defended, which are batting down and which are unleashed to stealthily ght
on the side of truth. However, the reality of a larger cause is essential to this work
which asks the public to question the sources, content, and fallout of the barrage
of mediated information, and in turn to collectively rise above the desire for imme-
diate satisfaction of individual needs for the good of the collective. Ultimately, the
work poses the challenge - the viewer can choose whether they will collaborate.
Some well known examples of a cover-up are for instance: the Roman catholic church
sex abuse cases, the Watergate scandal, the tobacco industry cover up regarding

All works within the 'Covert Ops' uncovered project works have been developed on
paper and Weijers uses mediated pop culture imagery as the prime layer creating
an unique and multilayered collage. The individual series of works of this project
consist of vintage magazine and book covers in combination with a second layer of
collage-material, directing the individual works more close towards the 'Covert Ops'
uncovered concept of the particular series of works. Collage-material used for these
series of Works are: Interview magazine-covers (1985-1986) cover-illustrations by:
Richard Bernstein and published by Andy Warholl, Life magazine covers from the 50's,
Saint book-covers designed by Dick Bruna for Charteris, and Popular Science (1943-
1946) cover-illustrations by Edgar F. Wittmack.
Covering while uncovering by adding abstract facial expression. Expressing the
suggestion to take a stand and face responsibility in life, guiding the concept deeper
into a moral message on a more personal and individual level and interacting on this
point with the conscious of the viewer. A mirror called self-reection if one would
want. By painting over the collage partly with lucent acrylic white Weijers empha-
sizes the suggestive character of this underlayer but simultaneously unveils the
hollow promise which lurks behind the pretty surface. Diversion methods as those
from a stage magician or illusionist, direct the public attention to a particular state-
ment or point, while in the mean time the real deal is out in the open but ignored.
The artist explores the ideas of transformation and contradiction. The process of
making the work is fundamental to developing a visual language through which he
can communicate the feeling of experience to the viewer. His works dene and re-
dene the meanings of process and transformation. Bringing elements of chaos and

dissonance into a state of harmony, each work matures into a fully realized presence.
The Covert Ops series of works, obtain their strength when shown together in close
formation. Clusters of 20 individual works, together they transfer like one work the
impression Weijers aimed for, towards the viewer.
Painting on a collage consisting of vintage bookcovers and magazinecovers, Weijers

interrogates the dilemma of time: its recollection, passage and suspension. Within
the overed Ops' body of work, Weijers depicts their given subject while simul-
taneously making reference to the process of their production and their own status
as 'objects'.
During the process of making the paintings, Weijers re-constructs and re-activates
his materials and likens his work to that of building a relationship: a series of attempts
at intimacy with the work, of fallen expectations, of failures and nally, of surrender.

on contemporary issues. By reaching a state of liberation from existing patterns,
the interplay of lines is dominated by the metamorphosis which conceals the
evaluation of his work from the source. The spectator's fantasy is stimulated by the
intuitive and specic combination of color, material and shape, thus seducing the
spectator towards an alternative view on this world. Weijers adds-on additional layers
of stitching and transparent resins within some of the overt Ops' uncovered series
of works.

E-Motion Pictures project
The 2013 'E-Motion Pictures' project, one could review as a series of mixed
media video works that are only present in a specic set space and time as
opposed to his regular mixed-media paintings which are constantly there.
It actually means these temporary pieces of art can be switched off.
In a continuous need to disconnect from and to question the existing on the
one hand and to discover new perspectives on the other, Weijers is one of
those artists constantly questioning the techniques they use, their meanings,
their goals, all the while perfectly aware they shall never be any denite
answer and that their work is meant to remain empirical. He's not an abstract
painter using guration but a gurative painter who is producing abstraction.
Over the past years, video has been a medium in search of its own authority
within his work. Within the imaginary bounders of his quest to distance himself
from gurative aspects in his work and after the development of earlier pro-
duced audio-visual projects, a complete integration of disciplines and capa-
cities within his work became inevitable. With the 'E-Motion Pictures' project,

traditional with new media.
The E-Motion Pictures 2013 assemblages consist of four wooden panels on

size 100 x 100 cm per unit, total size approximately 200 x 200cm. Video pro-
jection (beamer) will take place as indicated within artist impressions
as shown.

Vortex series
The 2013 Vortex series project one could review as a series of mixed media
paintings expressing the suggestion to take a stand and face the reality and
responsibility in life, guiding deeper into a moral message on a more personal
and individual level and interacting on this point with the consciousness of the

became seriously ill and had to ght some serious battles healthwise in order to
reach a situation that would provide a future for him. He managed to recover
from this endeavor and after more than a year not being able to work he needed
a kind of closure of this situation. With this Vortex series he made a good attempt
to research closure on the one end and to open up new roads to travel in a crea-
tive way. Vortex is based on a Yin Yang contrast. Strongly controlled linework on
the one end and a completely unpredictable and uncontrollable backdrop. Also
to be translated as under control and completely out of control and delivered in
the hands of medicine. Vortex opened up his professional road once more and
liberated his mindset from those previous encounters he had to cope with.

Pulp Vision reections
The 'Pulp Vision' reections series, reects and revives debate and dialogue on the
aspect of self-reection in relation to the nancial crisis as it currently occurs
worldwide. Weijers questions multiple sides of the current crisis. The loosely nar-
rative images offer no conclusions as to which parties actually are the defenders or
those being defended, which are batting down and which are unleashed to stealthily
ght on the side of truth. However, the reality of a larger cause is essential to this
work which asks the public to question the sources, content, and fallout of the
barrage of mediated information, and in turn to collectively rise above the desire
for immediate satisfaction of individual needs for the good of the collective.
Ultimately, the work poses the challenge - the viewer can choose whether they will
collaborate. All works within the 'Pulp Vision' reections series have been developed
on paper and Weijers uses collage material like US currency, Greek bonds and insu-
rance papers, Greek accountants books and Pin-Up illustrations and erotic photograp-
hy as the prime layer creating an unique and focused multilayered collage. The
individual series of works of this project could indicate aspects of self-reection if

of depicted guration and abstraction, that his worlds take shape. His painting acts
as a rhythm of color, of possibility, of realization and as a sorting structure through
which the artist makes harmonies within the chaos around him.

Laid-back series
The 2013 Laid-Back series paintings one could review as a series of mixed media
paintings expressing a suggestion for workaholics, overachievers and perfectionists
in general who envy people who seem to oat through life gracefully and never
concerned about what might happen. For all those on the opposite end of the
spectrum, the Laid-Back series of paintings provide assistance on how to sit back,
relax and enjoy the ride that is your life.
In his continuous need to disconnect from and to question the existing on the one
hand and to discover new perspectives on the other, within this Laid-Back series
Weijers reveals a personal follow-up message to the earlier developed works he
developed within the Vortex project.The process of making the work is fundamental
to developing a visual language through which he can communicate the feeling of
experience to the viewer. Enjoying a kind of a creative explosion, in 2013 Weijers
interacted with an immense body of work with his audience. When asked, he said,
that there was a lot that needed to be brought into the open at that time. Some

Ron Weijers - Laid-back series - I, II, III & IV - 2013 In general the Laid-Back series of works enjoy a more layered collage underlayer
80x90 cm - mixed media on wooden panel than usual. On top of his usual collage underlayer he added layers of corrugated
cardboard, various types of rope and many other kinds of cardboard. This creates
a more 3-dimensional surface underlayer than Weijers usually creates before
developing his paintings.
Reviewing the Laid-Back series of works, the most expressive work within the Laid-
Back series would be the only bigger painting as been shown on page 36.

Voynich project
During 2013, Ron Weijers and 10dence art collective developed an international
exhibition project presenting an alternative vision on the mysterious world of the
Voynich manuscript for release on several exhibition locations during 2014-2015.
Approximately twenty-ve artists from all over the world participate within the
Voynich project and all of them will show their creative vision and expression based
on their confrontation with the mysterious world of the Voynich manuscript.
Within the Voynich exhibition project, a highly respected international group of

artists explore the contents of the mysterious and centuries-old Voynich manuscript,
written by an unknown author, illustrated with bizarre, puzzling pictures and com-
posed in a language that even the best cryptographers can't decode. With this
project the participating artists transfer their artistic attempt to reect and to
revive debate and dialogue on the Voynich manuscript in their own specic manner.
The Voynich manuscript has been studied by many professional and amateur crypto-

for the Voynich exhibitions 2014-2015 subject of novels and speculation. None of the many hypotheses proposed over the
last hundred years has yet been independently veried.
By researching the Voynich Manuscript, the within this project participating artists
became intrigued in how people throughout the ages have created their own worlds
in order to understand the one around them. The artists similarly use their creative
process to create new places to give a feeling of journeying through new or parallel
worlds that mix micro and macro, the botanical and the astrological, and inner and
outer consciousness. The works of art from the participating artists in the Voynich
exhibition project ask to be studied, for the viewer to take their time and allow
each individual mystery to unfold. All works of art within the Voynich exhibition are
conversations, gurative as well as abstract on the dichotomy between our under-
standing of the civilised world versus our understanding of nature, between fact and
ction and the slippages in-between.

Tabasco Tabernacle AV project
Tabasco Tabernacle is a project aiming on maximum stimulation of audio-visual

senses, a creative and artistic international initiative, concept and challenge, a
collective effort created by more than 40 Dutch and American artists & musicians,
a sonic exploration blurring musical boundaries with mind-altering sounds & grooves
and artistic controversial visual tour illustrating an atmosphere of provocative con-
fusion. Ron Weijers initiated and coordinated this project and challenge. He de-
veloped the concepts, storyboards and screenplays for this unique and controversial
visual production for the Tabasco Tabernacle DVD project.
Ron Weijers, Easton Davy and Willem van Veldhuizen, three multi-talented creative
personalities, teamed up in order to guarantee the artistic values of the visual con-
tent. Ron Weijers, concept & product developer, musician, songwriter, painter,
photographer, illustrator, graphic designer and on top blessed with good organi-
zational skills, Easton Davy, painter, illustrator and graphic designer, also with strong
capacities in concept development and last but not least Willem van Veldhuizen,

A collective effort by more than 40 Dutch and American artists & musicians injected
their creativity into this unique audio-visual project. The wonderfull world of Global
Frequency & Tabasco Tabernacle project. The selected group of visual artists partici-
pating in the Global Frequency - Tabasco Tabernacle project consist of the following
highly creative and gifted souls.
New York based American painter Joe Davis participated with a collection of his latest
paintings, the international respected Rotterdam based, Croatian photographer and
illustrator Max Dereta participated with an enormous photographic collection and
provided the concept guidelines for one of the videoclips of the production, the Dutch,
Middelburg based painter Ben Game enriched the visual material with a huge quantity
of his paintings, New York based painter & photographer Toni Dalton almost daily
submitted new photographic work on top of her photogrpahic project 'Contrast &
Decay', a unique collection of collages from the in The Hague based, Dutch collage
artist & painter Carolien Vermeulen added another strong visual asset to the collected
visual material, the Schiedam based Dutch multi-talented painter, illustrator, animator,
videoproducer and much more, Pieter Zandvliet added a huge collection of his charac-
teristic drawings, paintings and animations on top and last but not least the Rotterdam
based, Dutch photographer Joke Schot especially photographed and compiled an
incredible amount of work for the Tabasco Tabernacle project. Ron Weijers, Easton
Davy and Willem van Veldhuizen could not hold back of course and added an even
larger quantity of visual material to the total.

Global Frequency Music
From 2001 on, Global Frequency independently recorded and released around
two CDs a year. All material has been written and produced by Ron Weijers. On
the individual CD projects, he worked together with a wide range of New York
and Rotterdam based musicians and the CD projects have been recorded in a
variety of recording studios in New York and in Rotterdam over the years. Global
Frequency independently released a total of nine regular CD projects and partici-
pated in several special projects with and for other musicians over the past years.
In 2006, the artistic and musical urge, to start up a new Global Frequency project,
resulted into a range of discussions with the New York based painter and friend
Easton Davy on the issue of picking up the challenge to add-on a new challenge
and artistic value to the forthcoming tenth Global Frequency production. These
discussions resulted in the decision to develop the rst Global Frequency audio-
visual DVD production. The challenge to integrate visual arts capabilities in the
disciplines of painting, photography, animation, illustration and graphic design,
into the musical productions, triggered the start of the Tabasco Tabernacle project.

10dence gallery & Korenbeurs
From summer 2007 Weijers obtained a multi-functional space within the historic
city center of Schiedam. A studio space for smaller projects and the 10dence
gallery at the groundoor and his personal living quarters on the upper oors.
An inspiring location for the development of his projects and a meetingplace for
the creative in general.
Also in 2007, Weijers obtained the historic Korenbeurs building from the Dutch
designer Jan des Bouvrie as a studiospace and a location for exhibits. Together
with painter and friend Nikolaj Dielemans he professionally occupied the Koren-
beurs building within the historic center of Schiedam as their studio location for
almost four years. In order to revive this majestic building, they developed an
art related concept based on the setup of an open and for the public accesible
artist studio on the ground oor of the building.
Within this studio, Weijers and Dielemans worked on a daily basis. In addition,
they invited guest artists every month in order to work together with them.

changing contemporary art exhibitions took place, mainly coordinated and
curated by Weijers.
With vision, passion, idealism and a clear pragmatic bussinessplan, over these
years, Weijers invested a lot of energy into the development of a new hotspot
for the arts within the Korenbeurs, at rst in cooperation with Jan de Bouvrie
and at a later stage in cooperation with the current owner van Doorn & Salari
real estate. His vision embraced a plan to regain permanent public access for
the Korenbeurs based on an cultural and arts programm. After a long period of
concept development, public relations, marketing and research, this initiative
resulted in the formation of a board of trustees in 2010 that in close cooperation
with the owners started the realisation of the Korenbeurs art center.
In the beginning of 2011 the activities of the board resulted in a bussiness plan
for the exploitation of the building as art center and at the end of 2011 the
Korenbeurs art center opened its doors for the general public.

As a photographer Weijers targets in on "catching" an objective, but also an alter-

native vision. Photographic projects like "Throw away your TV!", "It's a stars &
stripes circus out there", Get Connected with Phonarchy", Spray-com", Orange

deeper meaning by concept and reect his vision on social and political issues

Manhattan Transfer - a fascinating city full of imagination & surprises

1000 photographic impressions of New York by Ron Weijers
The wealth of the world has a New York address. Legions of artists, philosophers,
businessman, poets, writers, musicians, industrialists, brokers, movie stars, ad-
vertising executives and more, from all over the world created (and still do so)
this microcosm of all that New York has become. Its the story of a great fascina-
ting city and perhaps nowhere else in this world is the essence of being alive
more evident than in New York. A screeching amusement park without a roller
coaster. This metaphor was used in more ways than one, for New Yorks 24-hour
gurative playground. The ultimate place to recharge your batteries on all the
levels of your imagination. New York is one of the few places in the world where
one can watch the night sky lighten and break into streaks of rose that suddenly
saturate the heavens, then burst with sunlight that ignites sidewalks and streets

The images evoked by New York are all tough, aggressive, gritty though alive: tall

trafc; saturating lights; cabbies making wisecracks out of the sides of their
mouths; pedestrians of all colors, races and social stations elbowing their ways
through the teeming mass. Yet despite its stark realities, New York is one of the
most romantic cities in the world. Although it has never possessed the romance
of Paris, it has always exuded the thrill of power, money, ambition, and success.
For all New Yorkers, from nanciers to actresses, from advertising executives to
mobsters, the Big Apple, as it is sometimes called, is the ultimate locale for the
American dreamer. New York City is the largest city in the United States, and has
been for almost two hundred years since shortly after birth of the nation. But size
is not its only claim to prominence. It is also the nations, and perhaps the worlds,
nucleus for business, trade, nance, publishing, communications, theater, music,
and art. Like London, Paris, or Hong Kong, New York is a world capital and not
simply the supreme American city. From its inception, New York has been rocked
with troubles over population, unbearable trafc, crime, racial and ethnic con-
ict, pollution, lth, drugs, and an inordinately high cost of living. But it remains
the greatest of American Dreams, not the City of Light, but the City of Life.
