Redefining Motor Control VT

is the result of over 4 years of development for a fixed speed motor controller that
delivers unrivalled energy saving within the VT industry.

In the past 5 years there has been increasing pressure on industry to lower its energy consumption
and increase systems efficiency. This has been focused on many different attributes of systems
whether more efficient motors or the integration of lower friction belts and bearings or even overall
system design.

With over 70% of the worlds AC induction motor applications being fixed speed has
been specifically developed to focus on energy saving whilst enhancing the increasing demand for
ease of set up and reduction in downtime.

In 2011 after 20 years of designing motor control solutions for the conveyor market Fairford
manufactured the first motor controller for the VT market and specifically for enhanced energy saving
in escalators and hydraulic elevators.

The enhanced energy saving feature iERS (intelligent Energy Recovery System) is Fairfords patented
system with combined internal bypass which saves energy on lightly loaded motors. iERS reduces
the voltage and current supplied to only allow the motor to consume the exact amount of energy
required to maintain the speed at the load.

With increased rebate schemes on offer to offset costs and the spiralling costs of maintaining
contactors in escalator applications is now becoming specified as a retrofit product
and integrated in OEM equipment from factory build.

It offers a distinct advantage over traditional starting methods and is not only a soft starter. At its
core it offers the additional benefit of 45 minute installation time and full programmability as well
as an integrated power meter and field upgradeable software. It is unparalleled in its design using
touchscreen technology and offers the user simple and effective reporting and communications.

Enclosure Ventilation
When fitting into a cabinet, ventilation must be provided if the heat output of the unit
is greater than the cabinet will dissipate. Use the following formula to determine the fan requirement.
An allowance has been incorporated into the formula so that the figure for Q is the air delivery in the
fan suppliers data.

The maximum power dissipation occurs when energy saving.

Heat dissipated can be approximated with the formula:-
Watts ( ) = 1/2 x current rating x 3

Ventilation intrieure

Watts ( ) = 1/2 x courant nominal x3

4xWt
Q=
(T - T )
max amb

Q = volume of air (cubic metres per hour-m3/h)

Wt = Heat produced by the unit and all other heat sources within the enclosure (Watts)
Tmax = Maximum permissible temperature within the enclosure
(50C for a fully rated )
Tamb = Temperature of the air entering the enclosure (C)
If you prefer to work in CFM, substitute F for C. Q is now in CFM
