Teachers: Mr Salazar, Eduardo Subject: French (9-12)

Standards:

World and Native Languages Standards:

IL.IM.1: Understand the main idea in messages, presentations, and overhead conversations on a variety of topics
related to everyday life, personal interests, and studies.
CUL.IM.1: Investigate and describe similarities and differences in practices, products, and perspectives across cultures
(e.g., holidays, family life, historical and contemporary figures) to understand ones own and others ways of thinking.

Objectives (Explicit):

Students will be able to write a 2-3 sentence summary of a video about La Chandeleur, create a Venn diagram with a
partner, and write a brief description of a holiday, in order to understand the main idea of a presentation as well as
identify and describe the similarities and differences in the products, practices, and perspectives of holidays across
cultures.

Evidence of Mastery (Measurable): Students will listen to/watch a video about the history and significance of La
Chandeleur. They will complete a worksheet by taking notes on what they hear, what their partners heard, and synthesizing
the main idea in a summary of the video. Students will also post on a classroom Padlet, identifying the products, practices,
and perspectives (3Ps) of both La Chandeleur and Christmas, as they move around the classroom. In pairs, students will
turn in a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the holidays that each student chose and a short, accurate description
containing the 3Ps for their holiday (and explaining why their chosen one is their favorite).

Mastery will be 2-3 sentences and include all 3Ps of culture. Ex: Christmas is my favorite holiday because there are
presents and lights! (Products.) During Christmas, we all sing carols by the Christmas tree and drink hot chocolate
together (Practices.) because family is the most important thing for us. (Perspectives.) Nothing beats Christmas!

Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):

- Identify the common celebrations of La Chandeleur

- Define the products, practices, and products (3Ps) of culture
- Identity the products, practices, and perspectives of La Chandeleur
- Identity the products, practices, and perspectives of Christmas
- Compare and contrast La Chandeleur to Christmas

Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life): Students will create a word cloud on
Polleverywhere.com, by answering in 2 words what their favorite holiday is and why. A discussion about holidays will be
facilitated, focusing on how and why they are celebrated. The French holiday La Chandeleur will be introduced and an open
discussion will be held as to why the French would eat crpes as a custom for that day.
