Your introduction

Next Question>>

Tell me something about your self.

Go prepared for this question, as this is the most frequently asked question in the interview.
Answer it covering your work experience, educational qualifications and a little information
about your family background. Try to focus on key areas of your work while talking about your
professional experience. This is an open ended question and can help you in taking the interview
in which ever direction you want it to go. You should know where to put a full stop to provoke
the desired question from the interviewer.

Why does this role interest you? Or why have you applied for this job?

Keep the focus of the answer to this question on your skills, experience and personal qualities.
Link the job requirement to your skills rather than talking about the challenges, career and
progression.

Tell me something about your self - Feb 26, 2010 at 14:50 PM by Rajmeet Ghai

Tell me something about your self.

When an interviewer asks to describe yourself, you should ensure that it should be short and
simple. Avoid using flowery words and flaunting about yourself. It should be something like:

Hello, My name is John Wales. I’m from New York and born and brought up in the city. My
father is a businessman and my mother is a teacher. I have two siblings, an elder brother and an
elder sister, both single. I like reading and extremely fond of fiction.

Why does this role interest you? Or why have you applied for this job?

Try and convince the interviewer that you are there for an interview not because you were called,
but because you are supposed to be there and deserve it. Confidence and poise is all that it takes
to persuade the interviewer. It should be something like:

This role was something I always wanted to do. I am confident that I will not just be able to
achieve the responsibilities that will be given to me, but also learn from them. It will only make
me and my company succeed.

Qualifications and work experience

Next Question>>

Why do you think should we take you for this job?

Don't panic if you are asked this question. Make sure that you have understood the job profile
well before you go for the interview. Relate your qualifications and work experience with the job
requirements. If there are any new things that you are expected to perform in the new job, say
that you are always open to learn the new things and take up the new challenges.

What motivates you at work?

You can say that competition and new challenges motivate you at work.

Feb 26, 2010 at 14:50 PM by Rajmeet Ghai

Why do you think should we take you for this job?

Avoid talking too much about yourself. A cliché answer like below would be OK.
With my experience and quality of work, I am sure the company won’t regret hiring me. I am
extremely flexible and can adapt to different work atmospheres.

What motivates you at work?

I feel one should try and find motivation in whatever he does. Looking at people at a higher level
who have more responsibilities than me motivates me the most.

Next Question>>

Switching job

Next Question>>

Why do you want to leave your present job or why did you leave your last job?

The reasons for switching the job could be numerous. The best answer to offer for this question
is to say, “for better prospects”. Now they can ask you another question, what do you mean by
better prospects? To this you can say, better prospects in terms of experience, and exposure.

If you have been made redundant, put your words across very carefully. Your wrong words can
give an impression that only you were the one whose position was made redundant, which hardly
might be the case. May be you can say something like, “Over last 8 months a lot of restructuring
was going on in the company and 40 positions became surplus. One of them was mine but I have
learnt a lot during my tenure at XYZ company and I am sure I can add a lot of value to a position
like the we are discussing about”.

Feb 26, 2010 at 14:50 PM by Rajmeet Ghai

Why do you want to leave your present job or why did you leave your last job?

Try answering this question very confidently. Don’t portray a negative impression of your
previous company. Avoid answers like “I wanted a change”, “I started disliking my job”, “I got
bored” etc. Answer should be something like “I felt I was becoming stagnant there and needed to
grow”, “I felt as though I can do much more than I was”.

N Greatest strength

Next Question>>

What is your greatest strength?

Interpret this question as, what is your greatest relevant strength? Or Why should we hire you?
Tell them a strength that they want to buy. For this you will need to properly understand the job
profile and keep your answer ready. For example, if the job needs you to have convincing
answers ready for the any type customer’s questions, you can sell “your presence of mind” or if
you are required to change you sector or industry you can offer “your adaptability” as an answer.
It is important to keep ready at least 2 examples of the mentioned strength.

Feb 26, 2010 at 14:50 PM by Rajmeet Ghai

What is your greatest strength?

Avoid answering this question by bragging about yourself. Try and mention strengths related to
work. Avoid native answers like “My hard work is my greatest strength”, or “my weakness
becomes my strength”. Ideal answers could be “I can adapt to any situation and work
atmosphere”, “I’m very flexible”.

ext Question>>

Greatest weakness

Next Question>>

What is your greatest weakness?

Interpret this question as, why shouldn’t we hire you? There 3 ways to tackle this question. Judge
the situation and use one of them.

First way: Use your sense of humour. If the interview is proceeding in the light way and you
have built up a good rapport with the interviewer, you can get out of it by saying “Icecream”.
Accompany it with a right body language.

Second Way: If you have to answer this question seriously, give a weakness which doesn’t
relate to the job under discussion. For example, you can say, I have been using a camera since
childhood but I still don’t know how to mend it. If it is spoiled, I will need to take it to an expert.

Third way: Understand the requirement of the role under discussion and say that others accuse
you of having that weakness but you think that it is important for your work. For example, if the
job needs a detailed study and leaving a single step might need you to re-run the whole process
say that “My colleagues accuse me of having a too much eye for detail but I have experienced
that to do this work you need to go into details rather than cutting corners. I have worked with
people following a shorter route and doing the whole exercise again, which I would not prefer to
do.”

Feb 26, 2010 at 14:50 PM by Rajmeet Ghai

What is your greatest weakness?

The interviewer seeks an extremely honest answer to this question. Avoid answers like “My
strength is my weakness” or “I have no weakness”. Answers may vary depending on the person.
Answers like “I take time to mix with people”, “I tend to argue” etc could be some weakness.
Try and mention a weakness which will have an impact on the interviewer.

Greatest achievement

Next Question>>

What is your greatest achievement?

The underlying agenda is to know what personal qualities were required to achieve it. Don’t go
back too far to answer this question as this might give an impression that you have not achieved
anything since then. Find a relevant answer in the recent past for this question. If you are a
fresher and have been a topper of your college or university, you can say that during the
interview.

Feb 26, 2010 at 14:50 PM by Rajmeet Ghai

What is your greatest achievement?

An answer to this question should be more professional oriented rather then personal. Mention
about achievements that happened at work. Something related to the past projects and
applications you worked on for which you were rewarded. Mention about an achievement that
boosted you at work. An achievement that made you confident something related to a module
you worked on or got your company some revenue.

1.Tell me about yourself

The most often asked question in interviews. You need to have a short statement prepared in
your mind. Be careful that it does not sound rehearsed. Limit it to work/Study-related items
unless instructed otherwise. Talk about things you have done well at your college and how you
wanted to perform in the first job.

2. Why Should We Employ You?

For this question, your answer should list out strengths that you feel are relevant to the job.
Given below are some answers which could help you with your answers. However, structure
them to suit your requirements.

I have good co-ordination skills

Good analytical skills
I can persuade people to see my point of view, and get the work done
My greatest asset is my ability to motivate people
Even during emergencies, I do not loose my cool
I have good entrepreneurial skills
I have consistently met my deadlines and targets
Can say “no” to people when required to do so!
I am very co-operative with my sub-ordinates, and would like to see them grow
I am a good team player
I am very flexible, and have the ability to work hard under difficult work conditions
I have the experience and knowledge relevant to this job (Here, give appropriate details and
examples)

3. Do You Have Offers From Other Companies ?

This is of course a difficult question to answer. Obviously, you must have applied to other
companies if you are looking for a job or would have some offers from other companies already.
Therefore, do not lie that you have not. However, you are on thin ice here! The interviewer could
be checking your honesty. On the other hand, he/she may also be trying to find out how focused
you are - are you applying randomly, or is there a well-planned strategy?
Whatever your answer, it should match your career goals.

4. What Salary Are You Expecting?

Try not to get into salary details early in the interview. If pressed, you could say that it all
depends on the job, and would like to talk about it after a job offer. Say this in a convincing tone.
In case you are asked this question in your latter interviews, give a direct answer. Do not sound
apologetic while quoting the figure you have in mind.
SALARY EXPECTATIONS :

1. How much do you expect?

If you have done your homework, you would know how much other people in similar jobs are
paid. Quote the range upfront.

2. How much do you think you are worth?

Work out how much you should be paid, given the market value of the job and your skills. If you
can bring some extra skills to the table, do not hesitate to ask for more than the market value.

3. What kind of a culture are you comfortable with?

It is better to be frank about your preferences. Your interviewer will get a clear idea about your
expectations.

4. Which is more important to you-salary, perks or growth opportunities?

This one will reveal the real you. So be sure what you are going to say. Above all, be true to
yourself. If you think this is a negotiation move, then say clearly that you will never sell yourself
short.

5. What do you know about our company?

Do not give your opinions about the company. Stick to reported facts that you have gathered
from newspapers and so on. Talk about the product portfolio, size, income, and market
perceptions of the company. Also it is better to refer details about each company before going for
the interview from Freshersworld.com or PlacementWeek.com

6. Why should we choose you over someone else?

Talk clearly about problems that you have solved in your College/Project Team and highlight the
quality required.

6. Your qualifications are excellent, but you may be overqualified for the position we have to
offer?
Point out that more experience can never be a drawback. If you are multi-skilled, then highlight
the fact that a company on the fast-track needs multi-skilled people. It needs people within
different departments to work together. Also emphasise that the company's future growth will be
an exponential function of your experience.

QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK :

Interviewers usually round off by giving you an opportunity to ask questions. Treat it like a
welcome opportunity.
You could ask questions like.
a) Tell me about your company.
b) Now that I have outlined my career goals, do you think you can offer me the opportunities I
need?
c) What kind of training and learning can I expect in your company?
d) Describe the work culture and the management style of your company?
e) What is the long-term vision of your company?

As a fresher, current position and status can impact the way you are interviewed. Fresh Out of
College

The basis on which you will be judged is your academic background, family background, and
interests.
If looking for your first job, ensure that your previous experience, even if it is part-time, is
noticed.
Mention projects or responsibilities you may have undertaken. This will indicate your area of
aptitude.
You should be willing to put in regular hours, in line with the company's policies. The
interviewer needs to know whether you can be punctual and put in full-time work.
In case you have applied for the post of management trainee, you should display an ability to
adapt, and indicate all-round interests. Moreover, you should have good interpersonal skills.
You should be enthusiastic to learn, and show commitment towards the organization, as the
company will be spending a lot on your training.

Bring with you :

a) Copies of your resumes
b) References and letters of recommendations.

First Impressions :
There is a common saying that minds are made up within the first 5 minutes of an interview. So
keep in mind these important first impression indicators. Walk in the door as if you already work
there, carry yourself as though you feel perfectly comfortable with the situation. Arrive on time
or a little early. In the waiting area, politely tell the receptionist who you are meeting and in a
friendly way, ask where you should sit. Take slow, deep breaths to help you remain calm and
focused. When introduced to the interviewer, have a firm, but not painful, handshake. Smile.
Have good posture when sitting or standing. Introduce yourself in a relaxed, confident manner.
Have a well-groomed, professional appearance. Project a feeling of confidence. Bring extra
copies of your resume, some thing to write on and something to write with.
