Literacy resources used at the school

South Coogee uses Talk for writing as a strategy for reading and writing. This is a program aimed at
giving children the language or vocabulary they need for particular topics.

The proses involves starting orally by reading texts to the students before they read and analyse the
text themselves. This is a warm up to give the students an idea of the tune of the text or the pattern
of the language of this type of text. Then students construct a text map and physical movements to
help the children recall the text or understanding the structure.

The idea is to create a washing line with models and words and phrases to support them when they
go to write their own text. Shared writing can be done alongside this for further assistance.

The teacher has the chance to comment on their washing line assess the childrens work. What can
children can actually do? Aspects that they were having difficulty with also features to focus on in
the next unit.

I think I will adopt this into my lessens for the text types we are doing.

My Class
There are 22 students in my mentors year 4/5 split class.

What has been taught to date Term 1,2,3

Im told by my mentor teacher that the class has covered all but recall/ comprehension so we have
planned for me to do some procedural writing lessons, some read and respond on a book of my
choice.

Areas of weakness and strength in the class

My mentor showed me a sample of the strongest student in the classes work and that she is at more
like a year 7 level of writing. But she also explained that she is incredibly hard on herself and can get
caught up and anxious about her work. She also showed the worst level of writing in the class, she
explained he will sit for extended periods and not do any work. There was very little done and it was
very messy.
