A&M GPA: 4.0
A&M Hours: 12, Total Hours: 52
Current Major: Psychology, Desired Major: Accounting
Basis for Exception: Less than 30 A&M hours
As a sophomore at Texas A&M University, I satisfy a majority of the requirements
needed to be accepted as a change-of-major student. Once I complete the Spring 2017 semester, I
will have 60+ total hours and only 25 A&M hours. My previous academic achievements have
prevented my transference into the Mays Business School accounting program. If accepted, I
will continue to work diligently, ensuring that I am fulfilling my personal academic standards as
well as those set forth by this new degree plan. Attending Texas A&M University has been my
primary goal for as long as I can remember. Born a third-generation Aggie, I was brainwashed
into loving this university with every ounce of my being. I will continue to proudly represent this
university by being fearless on every front, if I am accepted into this program. Last year, I was
awarded an opportunity similar to this one, and I continue to demonstrate my immense gratitude
by being a learner in the classroom, a listener among students, and a leader on campus.
In the Spring of 2016, I risked it all and appealed my original Texas A&M admissions
decision. The universitys initial offer was a seat in their Program for System Admission or PSA.
Most people would have jumped at the opportunity, but I was disappointed. However, I did not
allow this decision to determine my future and instead acted. I hand-delivered a manila envelope
containing documents relating to my admission to President Youngs office and filed an official
appeal in the days following. On April 12, 2016, I was notified that my appeal had been granted,
and I was officially a loud and proud member of the Fightin Texas Aggie Class of 2020.
Immediately overcome with gratitude and joy, I quickly accepted my new admissions decision.
I had not only proven to my family, friends, and President Young that I was deserving of a spot,
but I had also taught myself a valuable lesson. Impossible is just a word that makes opportunities
worth fighting for. Through perseverance and passion, any dream can become a reality.
As a student at Texas A&M University, I work hard to set an example for other Aggies
and community members by living out Texas A&Ms core values, especially Selfless Service
and Leadership. During the Fall 2016 semester, I joined Project Sunshine, an organization that
provides free events to children in the community who are disabled, ill, or have special needs. I
along with the other members have spent the last year striving to accomplish the goal of our
organization Building friendships while bringing smiles to the childrens faces. I have
learned a lot about both myself and others through this organization. Compassion and
understanding are not hard traits to encompass. A simple smile, high-five, or hug has the ability
to bring immeasurable joy to a child and to create a beautiful relationship between two people.
Next year, I will hold an executive officer position and will be tasked with unifying all members
of Project Sunshine. This new role will allow me to assist in leading the organization and setting
forward goals, as I will be working closely with both the Director and Co-Director. My objective
is to ensure that all members feel welcomed and can grow to share a similar passion for the
organization as I do. Project Sunshine has ultimately shown me that compassion and love are not
merely emotions but rather actions that come from the heart.
In the future, I aspire to utilize what I have learned from Project Sunshine to serve my
community. Before I achieve this goal, however, I want to expand my knowledge in accounting
and become a CPA. Currently, both my mother and father are CPAs who have always wished
that one of their 3 daughters would follow in their footsteps. Being the youngest, I watched as
my sisters strayed away from business and instead studied engineering and medicine. This made
me reluctant to try accounting, as I wanted to create my own path like my siblings. I enrolled in
ACCT 209 this semester to expand my knowledge and open my mind to the many opportunities
an accounting degree could provide me. This experience was eye-opening, as I noticed that I
genuinely enjoy learning about different accounting methods and principles. I now aspire to
become a CPA so I may create a better understanding of the business world. Another factor that
influenced my desire to change majors has been assisting my parents in creating, owning, and
operating an Escape Room in Sugar Land, TX. Watching their business succeed has given me
valuable experience in marketing and management, which are keys to being an effective leader
in the business world. One day, I would like to start my own business or non-profit organization,
incorporating my experiences from Escape Again Rooms, Project Sunshine, and Texas A&M
University. Though I can do so without a business degree, I know that the Mays Business
School accounting program is the first step in providing the necessary education I need to be
successful. If granted this appeal, I will work tirelessly to justify my acceptance and remain a
prime example of what an Aggie is, both in the classroom and in my community.
