Prepositions of direction

Prepositions of direction talk about movement toward something.

1. "Onto" is usually used to say that an object is placed on something else.

Martha stepped onto the platform.

2. "Into" is used to say that an object is placed from the outside to the inside of
another object.

Catherine put the camera back into the bag.

3. "Across" means to go from one side of something to the other side.

Jim walked across the hall to join the meeting.

4. "Around" is used to say that something is moving in the direction of a


circle.

I saw you running around the field this morning.

5. "Through" is used to mean that something went inside one end and out the
other end.

You need to pass through a long tunnel before reaching the park.

6. "Out of" means that something from the inside is going outside.
