Modernists therefore participate in a general questioning of all the values held dear by the
Victorian period: religion, progress, bourgeois domesticity, capitalism, utilitarianism,
decorum, empire, industry etc
Many modernists also tend to take the Romantic exploration of the irrational, the primitive,
and the unconscious to darker extremes.

or the creations of the surrealists and Dadaists)
Postmodernity and Postmodernism:
In many ways, postmodern artists and theorists continue the sorts of experimentation that
we can also find in modernist works, including the use of self-consciousness, parody, irony,
fragmentation, generic mixing, ambiguity, simultaneity, and the breakdown between high
and low forms of expression.
Some of the things that distinguish postmodern aesthetic work from modernist work are as
follows:
7) late capitalism. There is also a general sense that the world has been so taken
over by the values of capitalist acqusition that alternatives no longer exist. One symptom of
this fear is the predominance of paranoia narratives in pop culture (Bladerunner, X-Files, the
Matrix, Minority Report). This fear is, of course, aided by advancements in technology,
especially surveillance technology, which creates the sense that we are always being
watched.
9) secondary orality. Whereas literacy rates had been rising steadily from the
introduction of print through the modern period, postmodern society has seen a drastic
reversal in this trend as more and more people are now functionally illiterate, relying
instead on an influx of oral media sources: tv, film, radio, etc.
1. Characterize the society we encounter. What is the picture the film projects of conditions in
LA in 2019? Give examples. How is the society dystopian?
2. Characterize Blade Runner Deckard. What type of character is he? Does he go through a
development in the course of the film? Is Deckard a human or is he himself a replicant?
What does this mean in the film?
3. What impression do we form of Tyrell and the Tyrell Corporation? How are they presented
in the film? What effect do they have on the society in the film?
4. The theme of androids vs. humans. What impression do we form of the replicants in the
film? Photos seem to be particularly significant to them, why? What is the film saying about
the human postmodern condition?
5. Rachel represents a new type of replicant. What distinguishes her from the other replicants
and what are the concerns that she has to deal with? What is her symbolic significance in
the film?
6. The replicant Roy is particularly interesting. Notice his poetic language and pick out some
central quotes. What does that show us about him? Why do you think he saves Deckard in
the end? What do you make of the scene where he puts a nail through his hand and the
scene (and the dialogue) where he confronts Tyrell. What is the symbolic significance of
Roy?
7. What other signs and symbols does the director make use of to discuss the postmodern
condition?
8. How does the film treat themes of cconsumerism, waste and recycling? How is the
wearable art' of late capitalism a sign of postmodernism?
10. Give example of the unreal being made real from the film.
11. Give some examples of bricolage and intertextuality from the film?
12. Think about the soundtrack. What is characteristic of it and how does it underscore the
general atmosphere of the film?
