Reflection on lesson:
A few strengths that I learned from this lesson were that making the examples from the lesson real life situations makes
the students more interested in the lesson. They were all able to relate to the examples that I had. It was good to have
my PowerPoint as a reference because it was much easier to go along with the lesson. I thought that the group work
was a good idea because the students were able to come together and collaborate. They were really able to work
together and to come up with ideas that were different. When it came to the worksheet it was much easier when I read
it out to them because they were able to understand what the problem was asking and since they were in first grade it
was a little harder for them.

A few weaknesses that I learned from this lesson were that it can be stressful to fit so much in what seems like so little
time. It felt like I had to rush to be done because I did not pace myself the best. I did not realize that the thirty-minute
social studies block went by so fast. Another weakness was that the students tried to get off topic when they were
working in small groups and ended up either talking about something else or just sitting there staring at each other.
They needed a push to be able to learn and really talk about what they were supposed to. There were two

2
troublemakers that tried to cause problems for me because they were disrupting the class and I had to stop my lesson
many times to make sure that they stopped interrupting me.

I leaned that teaching and student learning is that it is really a science. Each student learns differently and it is important
to make sure that each student understands what is happening. In the earlier grades I found that they have a shorter
attention span so they have to learn things in smaller portions. It is much easier for the students to understand when
they have real life examples that they may be able to relate to. Conflict is something that happens every day so I think it
is important that students are able to get real world examples so they know how they may have to face certain things.
Teaching and student learning are interdependent on each other and when one of those components are not working
they are not very compatible.

I would teach this lesson differently in the future is to make sure to pace myself and make sure that I am able to have
enough time for all of the lesson that has to be taught. The other thing I would also change is the way that I disciplined
certain children. I would make sure that I was able to discipline them once and make sure that they did not cause a
problem for the rest of the lesson. I would also keep a vigilant eye on the students when they are doing group work or
even give them conversation starters to get the conversation started and on topic.
