Different Forms Of

Learning Experience in Science

Experiential learning is a distinctive feature of the Science undergraduate curriculum
which aims to enhance the learning experience of science students. The Faculty of
Sciences Experiential Learning programme, a graduation requirement for the BSc
curriculum, provides opportunities for students to extend their learning experience
beyond the classroom. The experiential learning can be in the form of undergraduate
research, exchange studies, field trips, disciplinary internship, or service learning
internship. We believe such learning experience can benefit students by enhancing their
insights in the real-world workplace environment and capabilities to integrate theory and
practice, broadening their global outlook, and developing their social and cultural values.

This booklet describes the valuable experience of our Science students in various forms
of diverse learning activities in the past few years.

More about the Overseas Research Fellowship Scheme
(ORF), Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) Scheme and
the Undergraduate Research Colloquium
The Overseas Research Fellowship Scheme (ORF) and
the Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) Scheme have
been implemented since 2007 to provide undergraduate
students with research opportunities. For SRF, students
will do research in HKU. For ORF, students can go to
overseas institutes, with f inancial support for travel
and accommodation. A stipend is given to the students
participating in the two schemes. Students interested in the
schemes can approach their teachers for advice on available

Field studies form an important curriculum component in the Earth
Sciences, Ecology & Biodiversity, and Environmental Science
programmes. Engaging students in a local field trip or overseas field
camp provides them with hands-on learning experience which is not
possible in a classroom or a laboratory setting. Our students have

there are no prescribed methods or procedure for us to follow. We have

In our 20-day field camp in Cyprus, we first spent a few days going
around in the field, learning to recognize the different geological
units and the typical rocks. Cyprus is a remarkable place since it

oceanic crust is exposed on land. Therefore, we could actually see
the rocks that make up the ocean floor as well as the deeper parts
of the Earth. This is really an unusual opportunity for us since not
many geologists have actually seen a section of the earths oceanic
crust.

In Cyprus we visited a copper mine. These copper-rich deposits

formed near the ocean ridge where new crust was formed. The mine
was no longer in operation but we witnessed the environmental

As much as they admired the brilliance of this natural world,

Overseas learning experience is not limited to academic exchange or field studies only. Many
companies and organizations are willing to recruit university students to help out for a couple
of weeks or months. Last summer, Izaac Leung Ka Ho, Year 3 student majoring in Astronomy,
had gone to Beijing for a 6-week internship while I myself went to Brussels. These opportunities
allowed us to immerse ourselves in a different culture while gaining real work experience.

About the Job

Izaac: I applied the internship through an institute named Hong Kong United Youth Association
with the help of the Department of Physics. Together with 200 students from different
universities, we stayed in Beijing for 6 weeks and worked in one of the 12 different museums. I

of people can vary so much. God made us so different. Maybe he wants
us to learn how to cooperate, share and sacrify.
