Digital Warhol

Objective: Arts integration with technology and formal qualities of art. Students will
recognize that frequently viewed images in repetition, altered in color, have an artistic
expression or style.
Materials: computer, https://pixlr.com/ photo editor, User Guide for Pixlr

Procedures:
Step 1: Go to www.macjackvisualarts.weebly.com
Click on the More tab on the menu bar. Scroll down to Resources for Student Work. Click on it.
Click on the Pixlr.com button.
Step2: Click on the Butterfly icon, this will take you to the photo editor.
Step 3: Open a new browser window. Search for images of your favorite product, celebrity or animal. Find
an image with very clear edges around the main object. Right click on your mouse and scroll down to save
picture as. Name it, Warhol pic, and save it to your student ID file.
Step 4: Go back to your browser window that is open to Pixlr. Click on open image from computer. This
will allow you to go to your ID folder and click on your saved image.
Click on open.
Step 5: Your image will now be open. Click on the menu bar, go to
adjustment. Scroll down to desaturate. Click on it. This will turn
your image black and white.
Step 6: Click on adjustment again and scroll down to posterize.
Click on it. A box will pop up that will allow you to change the level of
posterization. Change the level to 3. This should create 3 areas of
value within you picture, black, gray and light gray. Click ok.
Step 7: use the color picker and choose 1 color for your lightest
areas. Use the paint bucket to fill in each white area with this color.
You can go to View on the menu bar and zoom in to get a better look at your image to see the light or
white areas to fill. If more of the area fills with color that you dont want, click on edit on the menu and
scroll down to undo.
Choose another color for your medium gray area. Follow the steps. Then choose a darker color to fill in the
black areas.
Step 8: Go to the menu bar and click on image scroll down to size. Change the number in the first box
to 300. Write down the Width and height you have chosen for your image so you can make all 4 of your
images the same size. Then click on file then click save as. Name your image quadrant 1 and save it to
your student ID folder.
Step 9: repeat steps 4-9 three more times. Make sure you use different colors for each quadrant. Name
your second image quadrant 2, third image quadrant 3 and the 4 th image quadrant 4 and save to your
student ID folder.
Step 10: Open up Pixlr.com photo editor and click on create a new
image. When you choose your preset canvas size, make sure that you
double the width and height of your image. For example: if your image is
300 wide, it needs to be at least 600 wide; if your height is 450 then your
height has to be at least 900.
Go to the menu bar and click on layer. Scroll down to open image as a
layer. Click on the move tool on the menu bar. Move your image to the
quadrant that you named it. (Quadrant 1, top left, quadrant 2, top right,
etc.)

Step 11: Bring in Quadrant 2 image. Repeat the steps to move it into the
2nd quadrant.
Step 12: Repeat steps 10-12 until all 4 images are placed on your canvas.
Make sure images are centered and have either no border or an even
amount of white border around all 4 images. Save your image. Name it
Digital Warhol and your initials. Save it to your student ID folder.
Step 13: add your art work to the drop box on the U drive. Click on drop
box then scroll down to the MacJack folder. Place your file in this folder.
