1. Describe "a living organism". / What would be its difference from a non-living thing?
a. Living things are made up of cells; exhibit characteristics of life, like growth, movement,
reproduction, response to stimuli; they evolve, and require energy for daily activities. The living
things around us are human beings, animals, plants and micro-organisms.
Non-livings things do not involve any characteristics of life. They do not grow, respire, need
energy, move, reproduce, and evolve.
The difference between Living things and Non-living things are; living things can move, but
non-living things cant, energy is required by living things, while non-livings do not require
energy. Living things are capable of growth, reproduction and death. Non-living things are non-
motile, but living things can move around. Living things respire; non-living things do not respire.
Living things adapt to the surroundings and respond to stimulus.
2. Discuss the importance of photosynthesis.
a. As we all know, all organisms need energy to grow and reproduce. Many organisms
(including all plants) use cellular respiration to produce ATP, which is used for cellular
energy. The respiration uses carbohydrates like glucose as a substrate. Whereas humans eat
food to provide the fuel for respiration, plants make their own through what we call
photosynthesis. Without photosynthesis, plants would not have carbohydrates for
respiration.
In addition, the carbohydrates produced in photosynthesis are also used to build plant cell
structures just like the cell wall.
3. Discuss the importance of respiration.
a. Respiration is a process common to all living things. Respiration is important because it
provides the energy for living organisms to perform and to do all the other functions to
maintain life. Most single-celled organisms, such as bacteria, do not require much energy
unlike human beings and plants.
