29, to celebrate Rashtriya Ekta
Diwas and pay tribute to one of its
greatest sons and the leader of Indias
freedom struggle against British
colonial rule Sardar Patel.
Since 2014, the Government
of India has declared to celebrate
the birthday of Sardar Patel on
October 31 as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas
or National Unity Day, to foster
and reinforce the governments
dedication to preserve and strengthen
the unity of the Indian nation.
Vallabh Bhai Patel, fondly called
Sardar Patel by the people of India
for his dynamic leadership and
commitment to the cause of Indias
independence from the British
rule during the first half of the 20th
century is considered one of the
founding fathers of the Republic of
India.
It was his exemplary role as the
first Home Minister and Deputy
Prime Minister of independent India
in uniting 550 odd small princely
states into the newly constituted
Republic of India that his birth
anniversary is being celebrated as
National Unity Day.
The Government of India had
been taking the lead in organising

Dev on Saturday, November
4, lets revisit the history remind

generation about our proud history

Guru Nanak Dev, the first Sikh
Guru, was born on April 15, 1469
in a village called Talwandi Sabo,
now known as Nankana Sahib near
Lahore in Pakistan.
His fathers name was Kalyan
Chand Das Bedi, popularly known as
Mehta Kalu and mothers name was
Mata Tripta. His sister Bebe Nanaki
was five years older than him.
At the age of seven Guru Nanak
Dev was enrolled in a village
school. It is said that from an early
age, his views were very different,
his outlook towards life were much
larger and broader than many others.
His sister Bebe Nanaki got married
in 1479 to Jairam and moved to
Sultanpur. Since he was very close to
his sister, he also shifted to Sultanpur
with her and took up a job as an
accountant under Daulat Khan Lodi
who was also the employer of Jairam.
The job as an accountant failed
to interest him, and soon he gave
up his accounting career and started
preaching. He soon earned the

T he Jain community in Auckland

is all set to get its first temple in
Auckland soon.
The first step toward this cherished
goal was taken on Saturday, October
21, when Bhumi Poojan was done by
a group of enthusiastic members of the
Jain community in Auckland.
About hundred members of the Jain
community gathered on Saturday,
October 21, over the long weekend
for Snatra Maha Pooja and exhibiting
a resolve to bring a temple for
the community.
The pooja was held at Portage Road,
New Lynn, Auckland, where Jain
devotees had been traditionally gathering
since 2009 to offer prayers and perform
other Jain rituals.
The pooja was followed by
cultural events involving youths of
Jain community singing songs and
performing dance, whereas the women
made traditional rangoli and ghaunli
(rice and grains designs) with 108 diyaas.
Earlier, the Jain community had also
celebrated the Paryushan Parva the
most important annual holy event for
Jains and usually celebrated in August or
September at the same venue.
Around Paryushan Parva, Jains
further increase their level of spiritual
intensity often fasting and meditating for
a period of eight to ten days.
The festival ends with the celebration

It is a long-awaited and much-
cherished dream of the Jain community
and the wider Hindu community,

religions, with Jainism emanating from
the folds of Hinduism and inheriting most

Sikhism and Hinduism).

New Zealand is coming together across
different sects as in India to build a Jain
Derasar-temple in Auckland that should

sue countries for what they consider
unfair, unjust or discriminatory under
TPPA provisions.
If an investor from one country (the home
state) invests in another country (the
host state), both of which have agreed
to ISDS, and the host state violates the
rights granted to the investor under the
treaty, then that investor may bring the
matter before an arbitral tribunal.

study will kick in next year and should plan
accordingly.

organisations should continue to make
arrangements for study and enrolments for next
year as they normally would. This includes
starting, or continuing, any applications for
study and/or for student loans or allowances.

T he sixth Labour government, as a part

of its oft-repeated intentions of bringing
more compassion and empathy in governance,
would be extending empathy to criminals and
offenders of the worst crimes, by repealing
the controversial three strikes law by early
next year.
The three strikes law doesnt work, and
will be dismantled next year, Justice Minister
Andrew Little told New Zealand Herald on
Wednesday, November 1.
Its been eight years since this got onto the
statute books and its not making a blind bit
of difference. Its time to find something new,
something different, Mr Little further added.
There has been a lot of controversy around
this law with opinions divided on both
sides around its efficacy in making a dent in
crime statistics.
Opponents of this controversial law often
claim that it is contributing to the fast growth
of the prison population, whereas those who
support its claim that a repeal of this act would
place interests of criminals ahead of those of
victims of crime.
The three strikes law officially known as The
Sentencing and Parole Reform Act 2010 creates
a three-stage system of increasing consequences
for repeat serious violent offenders.
There are 40 qualifying offences comprising
all major violent and sexual offences with a
maximum penalty of seven years or greater
imprisonment, including murder, attempted
murder, manslaughter, wounding with intent to
cause grievous bodily harm, sexual violation,
abduction, kidnapping, and aggravated robbery.
A first warning is issued when an offender
aged 18 or over at the time of a qualifying
offence, and who does not have any previous

Sagar Narayan granted NZ temporary stay

given the green light for temporary stay
in New Zealand.
Mr Narayan who resides in Kelston,
Auckland was supposed to be deported on
Fiday, October 27.
However his case would go through a full
review by the new Minister of Immigration Iain
Lees-Galloway.
Mr Lee-Galloway in hisTwitterpage stated
that: Sagar Narayan will not be deported
tomorrow. Case file being prepared for review
of the original decision.
Comments followed on his Tweet for hopes
of great news and kindness in action.
An Alison Green replied on Mr Lee-

The review is understood to be a chance for
families and friends of the Narayan family to
fight for Mr Narayans stay.
Mr Narayan is intellectually disabled and
required help with basic tasks, including getting
dressed and eating meals.
He moved to New Zealand in 2009 after his
grandparents passed away.
His family is understood to have been granted
permanent residence in 2008.

a contract soon for overhaul
of three Mi-26 helicopters, the

Government to designate 'khichdi'
T
he government has decided to designate the humble "khichdi" as
the national dish to popularise it in global markets for commercial
promotion. During the World Food India conference, well-known
chef Sanjeev Kapoor will attempt to create a world record by preparing
'Brand India Khichdi' using 800 kg of grains in a giant kadhai (wok).
The conference will be held here from November 3-5.
The home-cooked staple food symbolises India's great culture of unity
in diversity, said Minister for Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur
Badal during a curtain raiser event for the conference.
"Khichdi is considered nutritious, healthiest food in India and it is is eaten
by poor and rich alike, irrespective of their class. It symbolises India's great
culture of unity in diversity. So it has been selected as the brand of Indian
food," Badal said. Over 50 persons will be involved in the preparation of
khichdi during the global conference, which will be slow-cooked by steam.
The Brand India Khichdi will be prepared using ingredients like rice,
moong beans, amaranth, jowar, bajra, barley and Indian spices.
It will be distributed to visitors including ambassadors and delegates
from over 60 countries. The government has plans to popularise khichdi
and its recipe in restaurant and kitchens throughout the world by Indian
Foreign Missions.

Speaking at the All India Gaming Summit here, Law Commission
Chairman Balbir Singh Chauhan said the issue of gambling and betting had
to be addressed by experts of the industry and that the Law Commission
would welcome their opinions and incorporate them in its report.
As per the industry reports, regularizing and legalizing the sector will
bring in revenue and employment. But responsibility of ensuring welfare
and safeguarding the interests of the vulnerable sections of society should
be kept in mind while regularizing betting and gaming, a statement quoted
Chauhan. The summit organised by All India Gaming Federation addressed
topics such as ills of the present system, issues and challenges and self
regulation in skill gaming.

Tulsi said if betting was legalized and regulated, it would provide direct
employment to 5,70,000 people and indirect employment to millions.

its manifesto for the November 9 assembly election, promising
interest-free loans to farmers, laptops for students, jobs for youth
and special grade pay-scale for all employees.
Releasing the manifesto, Congress leader and Health Minister Kaul
Singh said all marginal and small farmers in the state would be extended an
interest-free loan of Rs one lakh without following strict conditions.
For the fruits growers, 90 per cent subsidy would be provided on anti-
hail nets. For the youth of the hill state, there will be creation of 1.50 lakh
government jobs in its five-year term.
He said if the party returned to power, all categories of employees would
be granted a special grade pay-scale.
Wages of the labourers employed under the central government-
funded Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act
(MGNREGA), the party said, would be hiked to Rs 350 per day from the
existing Rs 150.
"We will ask the central government to increase the MGNREGA wages
from Rs 150 to Rs 350. If it does not agree, we will provide the hiked wages
from our own resources," said Kaul Singh.
He was accompanied by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and party in-
charge and former union minister Sushilkumar Shinde at the manifesto
launch ceremony here.

city issued an advisory, asking Indian
students not to panic and to contact
the mission in case of such incidents.
The report of the attacks came
as Italian Prime Minister Paolo
Gentiloni was in India on a two-
day visit, and held talks with
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on
boosting ties that have seen a marked
downswing over recent years.
The Indian Consulate in Milan had

reports of attacks and cautioned
students to stay away from any area

"The Consulate has received
reports of unfortunate incident of

Milan. All Indian students are urged

"In the meanwhile, students are

A luscious, creamy pudding made with lentils
I t would be fair to say that split yellow gram (moong dal), is the most
unique of all the lentils used in Indian cuisine. Thanks to its versatility
(it can defy the sweet-savory spectrum), moong dal can spark innovation
in the kitchen. Usually made into savoury dals or combined with rice to
make Khichdi, here it becomes a buttery, sweet concoction known as
Moong Dal Halwa.

baked foods are known to have
around 200 mg sodium
Soups
Most canned or restaurant soups
have around 1,000 to 1,500 mg of
sodium per bowl.
Burgers and hot dogs
Even the vegetarian versions of
these foods are loaded with salt. The
patties alone have around 500 mg
of salt.
Hot chocolate and pancakes
If you are not have the homemade
versions of hot chocolate drinks and
