CE 537, Spring 2006 Exam 2

Prestressed Beam Design

A spreadsheet may be used to perform some or all calculations. Spreadsheets should be e-mailed to me at
the time the test is due. Calculations performed entirely by the spreadsheet (no typical hand-calculations
to document the procedure) should be clearly labeled and easy to follow.

1. Design a "field-topped" pre-tensioned double-T beam for a multi-story parking deck. As part of your
design,
a) Select the lightest double-T section (of normal weight concrete) from the PCI Design Manual
with a total depth (including topping) no more than 26 in. (10DT24+2, 10 strands)
b) Check the stresses at transfer and under service load conditions at 0.4 L and at the end of the
beam. Assume that prestress losses = 31.2k so that Pe = 262k. Calculate the section properties by
hand (or spreadsheet) for both the girder (A, I, yb, yt, Sb, St) and the composite section (Acomp,
Icomp, ycomp_b, ycomp_t, ycomp_slab, Scomp_b, Scomp_t, Scomp_slab) and compare with the values from the PCI
Manual (write them next to your values). (fci = 0.80 fc)
c) Check the flexural strength and the strain in the prestressing at 0.4 L. Add mild steel if
necessary to provide required flexural strength and keep the strain in the prestressing tendons
below 0.045 (2 #8 bars)
d) Check deflections at midspan (assume non-structural elements are not likely damaged by large
deflections). Check your calculations for Ieff against: x = 2.67in, Icr = 6080 in3, Ieff = 20,000 in4.

normal weight concrete span = 54 ft

f'c of beam = 5 ksi superimposed dead load = 15 psf
f'c of 2-inch topping = 3 ksi live load = 40 psf

2. Design a two-span post-tensioned beam for a multi-story office building. As part of your design,
a) Check the service load stresses at the exterior end, at midspan and at the interior end. Start with a
prestressing force of 300k and modify in 10k increments until all service load stresses are met.
b) Check the flexural strength at each location listed above. Add #8 bars (to make it easier to
correct) as needed to provide required flexural strength and keep the strain in the prestressing
tendons below 0.045. Extend at least of the bottom rebar at midspan the full length of the
beam.

normal weight concrete span = 60 ft Beams:

f'c of beam = 5 ksi frame spacing = 30 ft h = 30"
f'c of columns = 6 ksi story ht = 13' t_slab = 6"
b_w = 28"
live load = 60 psf
Columns:
28" x 28"

The distance above the bottom of the beam of the tendon CGS = 25, 2.5 and 27.5 at exterior
support, midspan and interior support, respectively. Assume the inflection points of the tendon
profile are at 10% of the span length from column centerline.

Top rebar is 2.5 below top of slab; bottom rebar is 2.5 above bottom of beam
