Summative Assessment:

Advocacy and Aid: Persistent 21st Century Social Justice Issue

By this point, you have learned to:

Differentiate between how Native people might have viewed Imperialism verses the European, American,
or Japanese perspective through the Avatar film watching and debrief, Quizlet virtual flashcard activity,
the diary entry from a native perspective, and the Investigative Journalism Broadcast assignments.
Identify the ways in which human rights were violated through Imperialism and how it persists to today
through the diary entry from a native perspective, the Scramble for Africa activity and guided notes,
and the Investigative Journalism Broadcast assignments.
Evaluate ways in which Globalization is necessary and helpful, and ways in which it may be harmful to
local economies and cultures primarily through the Globalization Webercise.

For the Investigative Journalism Broadcast your group had to choose a country or region do your broadcast on.
You delved into imperialist motives, causes, world politics, as well as local governments, economics, religions,
and culture. You critically analyzed both native and imperialist perspectives, and went even further to make
connections between imperialism in the 19th and early 20th centuries and globalism in the 21st century with your
webercise activity. Now that you have explored topics surrounding your country or regions socioeconomic status,
global interconnectedness, supply and demand, wealth, poverty and exploitation, you will conclude the New
Imperialism Unit with our outward-focused Advocacy and Aid: Persistent 21st Century Social Justice Issues
Project.

Advocacy and Aid: Persistent 21st Century Social Justice Issues

DAY ONE: Choose Your Topic and Project
1. Within your same groups of 2 or 3,
2. Using the same country or region you chose for your Investigative Journalism Broadcast assignments,
3. You will work together to choose (this will take some additional research and discussion) a persisting
social justice issue in your country/region of choice,
Social justice is based on concepts of human rights and equality; when we say, social justice issues,
we are saying that the basic human rights and dignity of some people, or a group of people, are being
infringed upon and/or abused.
It is best to choose something you can get passionate about, as this will become a persuasive
assignment.
4. Evaluate how this persisting social justice issue is either affected by you/us, affects you/us, or both
ie. Child labor in Thailand persists because there is a demand for cheap goods here in the United States.
I refuse to pay more than $10 for a shirt and only shop at stores that keeps costs low. My shirts are
made in Thailand.
5. And, finally, choose one of the following as your final project for our unit:
Create awareness documentary/interviews/video of the problem you have explored and upload it to
our class YouTube channel. Must include images.
Embark on letter-writing campaign to either our local Representative Royce who is the Chair of the
House Foreign Affairs Committee or to a major corporation calling them to policy changes. Must
include at least one image.
Create an online post on our class blog that consist of text, images, artwork, links, and video around
your issue.

DAY TWO: Begin to Craft/Plan/Outline Your Argument

1. Whichever project you choose, it should be persuasive. You are trying to create awareness for a cause,
ask for action from a politician for corporation executive, or engage the public to change their habits and
begin acting in a different way. None of this is an easy feat. You must be persuasive, use credible sources,
explain yourself creatively but also succinctly.
2. Begin organizing your points (use a traditional outline or Popplet/Padlet):
What is your social justice issue? And in which country?
What has caused itboth the supply and demand?
What is your argument (against something?)?
What are your solid facts, points, issues to back up your argument?
3. Begin brainstorming which methods of communication you think would be most effective to get your
point acrosswhether it be via documentary, letter writing, YouTube video, cartoon, etc.

DAY THREE: Putting the Pieces Together

1. Your group should be finished with your first draft today
If you are doing a video, the script should be complete, etc.
2. Make sure your images/videos/media are enhancing your piece not detracting from it

DAY FOUR: Assignment Completion

1. Make finishing touches on your assignment and:
Publish on YouTube
Send professional letter
Publish blog post
2. Copy and/or link must be submitted via Google Classroom

Think globally, critically, and civicallyand HAVE FUN!
