Introduction

The fundamental function of a radio frequency identification system is to use wireless

communication to identify an object. RFID technologys primary advantage is that it does not
require a line of site to detect an object, and can therefore simultaneously identify multiple
objects within an area. A typical RFID system consists of a reader, antenna, tag, and computer or
server. RFID smart classroom information display system focuses mainly on individual student
identification, timetable, lecture plans, announcements, entry through password confirmation and
the system was manufactured so that students are identified through direct matching of student id
information in UID tag with that in the student information database. In the mean time when
universities have been driving the informatization for university task computerization, they are
currently showing various implementations of digital campus which includes on-line academic
affairs administration system, electronic library and also expanding their informatization areas.

QR or Quick Response Codes are a type of two-dimensional barcode that can be read using
smartphones and dedicated QR reading devices, that link directly to text, emails, websites, phone
numbers and more. QR codes are huge in Japan and across the East, and are slowly beginning to
become commonplace in the West. The scope of use for QR codes really is huge, particularly for
the marketing and advertising of products, brands, services. Apart from these, QR codes can be
used on a daily basis for educational purposes to make the daily activities of the students more
efficient and easier.
RFID as tracking system:

RFID system helps track the movement of students in universities & verifies if students are
getting off at the right bus stop. It also helps automate attendance. RFID has brought about great
advancement to the security industry and offers an effective method to enhance safety of
premises. Most offices have been using RFID technology for a while.

Movement of students inside the university can be tracked if RFID readers are installed in
labs, halls, classrooms etc.

RFID student tracking system in buses helps university track whether a student is getting
off at the right stop.

RFID cards can also be given to guests entering the university to keep track of their
movements while they are on campus.

RFID in Automated library management system:

RFID allows identification of tagged books, using radio frequency. RFID based Library
Management System (LMS) will help us to increase the flow of transaction for our
library. This can be used to automate library management system.

Bar codes, magnetic cards are the good options for identification but not the best. RFID tag does
not have to be visible in order to let them read, it can be read once the tag is in range of reader
irrespective being visible or in line of sight. Another advantage of using RFID in library is, it
stores more than one variable; i.e. it stores stack number, accession number, book number, author
information etc, whereas barcode is limited to just one identification number.

The proposed system will perform following tasks easily; using RFID technology, -

Accessing number of books at a time.

Searching a particular book to check its presence in the library, through database
applications.
Locating the physical location of the book.
Accounting/Stock verification of the materials.
While using RFID based LMS librarian can process issuing, re-issuing, and returning formalities
really fast, all on few clicks, RFID based LMS also provides monitoring and searching system.
The monitoring system will continuously monitor the library gates and will act as a chambermaid,
so that the books taken out without completing formalities can be traced out easily and will alarm
the librarian. The searching module provides the fast searching of books using RFID handheld
reader (moveable). The physical location of the books in racks can be easily traced using this
module.
RFID in Asset management:
By replacing outdated and outmoded manual systems and by establishing a centralized and
automated asset management system using RFID, BUP can have instant access to their inventory
details and the location and status of each asset. And they can even deploy fixed readers and alarm
systems to track specific assets and automatically generate alerts if they are removed from their
assigned location or if someone attempts to take them off campus.

RFID technology not only streamlines asset scanning but also eliminates the possibility of human
error. Each asset is detected and identified automatically, and it is matched up with the correct
information in your database using its unique ID. This allows BUP to maintain a completely
accurate inventory of all tagged assets and properly account for current assets and future needs.
And, with RFID, your staff can quickly locate and identify any asset virtually anywhere on our
campus. Thus, by applying wireless networking and mobile technologies, BUP can not only
greatly reduce or even eliminate costs from asset loss or theft, but they can achieve further cost
savings by automating their asset management, reducing staff labor, and creating administrative
efficiencies. Thus, RFID can help manage university assets and achieve huge savings.
RFID in Power conservation:

When an authenticated person enters the room, his ID is matched against its profile and the preset
electrical appliances turn on and vice - versa happens when the person leaves the room. To track
the entry and exit in a room, each entry of a person in room is marked and its exit is properly
managed in depending on tags and motion sensors to control the automation of electrical
equipments. Room Automation and Power Conservation will automatically enable power
conservation which is a big advantage for cost-saving and also for reducing Global Warming
effects indirectly.

An active RFID-based stand-alone solution for ensuring sensitive and controlled areas, where
access is strictly limited, can be secured against unauthorized entry.

RFID based attendance system:

An RFID based attendance system works by having everyone who needs to be counted at a
location, such as employees at a job, to scan a tag that is on their person. This tag will be read by
the RFID scanner and the time at which it was read recorded and saved to a cloud.

This is helpful because it allows the tag to be scanned with minimal effort from the
person who needs to clock in or out or simply be counted as present.
An RFID based attendance system is able to reduce time theft by having the tags be
automatically read when a person walks into a building.
A person who is attempting to buddy-punch, or clock in for a friend, will have a much
more difficult time doing so.
RFID based attendance system scans automatically and is therefore running all the time.
How QR Codes can benefit the students:

QR codes are very popular tool for inventory management. We can implement this use in our
library for library inventory management. The BUP library is not that spacious and the staff
working for it tend to have a hard time managing students when there is a rush. Also, whenever a
particular book from a specific author is desired, it takes a lot of time to find it. QR codes can tell
the students if the book has been borrowed, if there is any more available, or other books are
available from different author. This will increase the efficiency of borrowing and librarians will
have updated records. This is how QR codes can help in Library Inventory Management.

Teachers and students mostly communicate through e-mail. The e-mail can contain a QR code
that leads students to another web page where they can find related materials. Or to a website
that is specifically made for them, so that students can get their course materials from there as
well as get updated about their in-course marks. Moreover, BUP authority can invite students
over email for any event or seminars where they can scan the QR code to join or to register.
Another way events and seminars can be connected with QR codes is using them in posters. BUP
has notice boards attached in places where students get to know about business competitions or
seminars. These posters can come with QR codes for them to know more about it or register.
This can help in sharing of information through QR codes.

QR codes can be used keep track of the payments. For example, BUP students need to pay
semester bills and students staying in dorm need to pay dorm rent on a monthly basis. QR codes
assigned to students can record information about these bills being paid or not, if they have any
due. This can also be a useful way to organize meal plans. With the increase in number of
students, the payment system in the cafeteria takes a lot of time. Instead of long queues, QR
codes can help in a more efficient management of payments.

QR codes can be used to make class activities interesting. The mainstream lectures become
boring at some point and hence for a change, QR codes can be included in class activities. For
example, a QR code can be provided by the teacher where he would have made random groups
made and by scanning the code they would get their assigned activity. Then they would start the
activity and answers would be written down. This can make the class a little more interesting.
BUP has a very tight security and often students suffer getting their car inside the cantonment
gate. QR codes can be used in this case. If the cars have a QR code, then they would be able to
get into the cantonment gate easily and there would be less hassle. This way, security can be
maintained.

BUP is recently being affiliated with websites that do not give access to regular users. These
websites are crucial for any kind of research and BUP authority can use QR codes to give access
to its students. In this way, students can be motivated to learn and further enhance their
knowledge about a particular topic.

BUP has recently introduced mandatory language courses. Since its still very new to the
curriculum, it could use some adjustments. The instructors can use QR codes containing links to
multimedia resources such as audio materials or video clips to help students get a better
understanding of the language. Thus, lessons can me made more interactive.

In paper-based tasks, QR codes can help students in self-assessment. For example, a QR code on
the worksheet can direct the learner to a web page showing the right answers and the learners can
check up on how much they have learned. This is how QR codes can help students in self-
assessment.

Students of BUP are often loaded with assignments, reports and term-papers. To give these tasks
some depth, students can use QR codes in their traditionally-done paperwork to add links to the
references they have used in completing their study. Moreover, the works of the students can be
shared in different online platforms through QR codes.

QR codes can be used to provide instructions to the students. Different course teachers have
different requirements for the assignments they assign to the students. Instructions and sample
papers can be attached to the assignment topic for students to better understand what the teacher
asks for. This is how QR codes can help in giving out instructions to students.
Conclusion:

Technology is taking hold of every sector of the human life and is bringing major changes in it.
Education is no exception, in fact, some of the greatest changes have been witnessed in this
sector. BUP is a comparatively new University in Bangladesh, but is giving its best effort to
provide its students with the best facilities available. Through this paper, we have discussed
some of the benefits the uses of QR codes and RFID can bring to the students of this University.
