Course Description
Foothill Colleges Summer Bridge English Program provides instruction in and review of
reading comprehension, writing, and study skills to help you be more successful in re-taking the
English placement test (if you choose) and/or in completing your college-level English courses.
This program also aims to improve your ability to meet the demands of ALL subject matter
courses head-on, especially those with challenging texts and high-stakes writing assignments,
such as timed in-class exams. During this program you will develop techniques for critically
analyzing college-level texts; practice sentence-combining, grammar, and mechanics; and reflect
on your own reading and writing process, in order to make improvements. Additionally, through
collaboration with your instructor, counselor, embedded tutor, and fellow students, you will build
confidence and gain the tools to succeed in college.

Course Objectives
By the end of the quarter, you should be able to:
A. Navigate the college campus, access resources, and gain an awareness of college pathways.
B. Improve proficiency in critical reading.
C. Improve proficiency in academic writing.
E. Develop strategies for tackling high-stakes assignments and tests in English and across the
curriculum.
F. Gain meta-cognitive awareness of personal attitudes and behaviors necessary for college
success.

Required Textbook*
Graff, Gerald, Cathy Birkenstein, and Russel Durst. They Say / I Say: The Moves That Matter
in Academic Writing: With Readings. 3rd ed.
*This text will be lent to you for the duration of the course. You must return the text at the end of
the quarter. Please do not write directly in the text; you will be provided with Post-It Notes.

Online Resources
The class website on Canvas includes downloadable materials, including readings,
videos, links, and sentence skills worksheets: https://foothillcollege.instructure.com.
Purdue Owl Online Writing Lab. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/
Foothill College, Green Sheet, NCLA 406A-50, Summer 2017 Prof. Herman / 2

Required Materials
Because you will be receiving many handouts and submitting many short writings each week, it
is important that you are prepared each day and remain organized for the entire class. In order to
do this I suggest the following:
*1-inch, 3-ring binder with dividers *college rule, 81/2 x11 loose-leaf binder paper
*stapler *dark-ink pens & pencils *appointment calendar *reliable internet *linked email
in MyPortal & Etudes *travel drive/cloud storage *Foothill College printing account

Participation
Participation includes attendance, partaking in class activities, and completion of assignments.
During discussions and group sessions, make sure you are contributing and helping others to
contribute. Group work is a huge part of all college classes, so youll be given many group
assignments to improve this important skill. The final Capstone Project requires you to work
with a group of your peers. You will be given time in class to prepare, but it is important that you
share the responsibility and attend class on those days, just as you will be doing in the fall!

Attendance
This is a positive-attendance course. By attending a minimum of 12 sessions,
participating in the final Capstone Project presentations, and completing an Ed
Plan for Foothill College, you will be eligible to receive free books for your fall
quarter English classes and to retake the English placement test (which is optional).
Though retaking the placement test is not required, and there is no guarantee of a
higher test score after completing this course, if you attend class regularly and complete
the coursework, you will be more prepared for the test and future English courses.
Please arrive on-time and be prepared to engage in the activities, so you can learn the
materials and skills covered each day.
If you will be absent, please email me before the missed session.
If you miss a class, you can still make up the activities and build your skills by checking
the course website for information and working with the embedded tutor or instructor in
the TLC.

An Open Classroom
During Summer Bridge, you will be immersing yourself in a college environment, which often
means discussing challenging and perhaps personal topics. And it is up to us to create a
classroom environment with mutual respect and curiosity that invites an open exchange of ideas.
Academic communication requires that all of us listen carefully to each other (whether we agree
or not) and that we state our positions with clarity and our disagreements with tact.

Teaching and Learning Center/ Embedded Tutors

Participating in the classroom is just one step of the learning process. Much of the skill-building
you do will happen with additional practice outside of the class. And the TLC is the perfect place
for this deeper learning to happen. The TLC provides free reading and writing support to
Foothill College students for all academic classes. Students who need help can come to the TLC
to meet with a Faculty Tutor or your Embedded Peer Tutor for 20-minute one-to-one
sessions. Our embedded tutor, Chau, will also be with us during regular class sessions to assist
with activities (MW 3:30-4:50; TTH 1:30-2:30), and will therefore have a clear understanding of
Foothill College, Green Sheet, NCLA 406A-50, Summer 2017 Prof. Herman / 3

the skills on which you are working. She will also hold reading, writing, and skill-building
workshops regularly, either before or after class, for students who want a review.
M 5-6pm in the TLC
TTH 12-1pm in the TLC
The TLC is located in Bldg. 3600. The TLC is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to
7:00 pm. For more information, visit http://www.foothill.edu/tlc/index.php.
