1 INTRODUCTION
Dear Student
Welcome to the module EUP1501: Ethical Information and Communication Technologies for
Development Solutions. In this module, we look at the study of how Information and
Communication Technologies (ICTs) can be used ethically to find solutions in development
areas. We believe that the knowledge, skills and values presented in this module will benefit
you as a student at UNISA, in your career and in your personal life it will enable you to
participate as a computer literate member of your community.
The following table provides you with a quick overview of the module, the different Learning
Units, what content will be discussed in each, and how the two e-textbooks will position the
tasks into different contexts - the one as a influencing member in our society where you will use
Information Communication Technologies in a variety of ethical ways in a developmental
manner to solve solutions, and the other, in a work-based scenario where you are required to
show computer competencies in a variety of situations (like using a word processor, a
presentation or a spreadsheet).

This is a Unisa signature module, which is important for your qualification, as it orientates you to
societal issues. It is set on NQF level 5 - the first higher education level in your degree, diploma
or certificate. This is a 12 credit module, which means that an average student will require about
120 hours to complete it. You will be exploring the discipline of Computer and Information
Sciences, and more specifically, the field of Data Entry and Microcomputer Applications. This
module is presented in English only as this is the predominant language in this field of study.
1.1 What is a Signature Module?

Signature Modules were specially developed at UNISA, are taught fully online and have the
support of Teaching Assistants to help the students in small groups. EUP1501 is the Signature
Module for the College of Science, Engineering and Technology and as such is meant to
represent a particular discipline and distinct character values that the College believes is
relevant and important for their graduating students to study. However, the fact that this module
forms part of 99 different qualifications, including many students from other colleges, was taken
into account in the selection and presentation of content and learning activities offered in this
module.

1.2 Why will I have a group and a Teaching Assistant?

EUP1501 is one of the largest modules being offered at UNISA: There were more than 14 500
students registered in each of the first and second semesters of 2014 for this module. We know

3
that especially when there are so many students, it might feel like you get lost in this crowd.
One of the advantages of the Signature Modules is that they are designed so that you work in
much smaller groups.
As students register for the Signature Modules, you will be divided into small groups of no more
than 30 students each, with a Teaching Assistant (TA) an electronic tutor allocated to
facilitate the group. This means that the Teaching Assistant will help to guide you through the
module, provide you with assistance on your assignments and also mark most of your
assignments.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
1. All study material will be available online and it is therefore an important and essential
requirement of this module that you have access on a regular basis throughout the semester
to a computer and the Internet.
2. You need to specifically join myUNISA if you havent done so already. Please consult the
myStudies@Unisa publication for more information on joining myUNISA, as well as the
activation of your myLife email account. Since a myLife email address is a required fiels
when enrolling students into myITLab, you cannot be enrolled into myITLab unless you have
an active myLife email account.
3. It is essential that you regularly check your myLife email account, as all official
correspondence regarding this module will be sent to your myLife email address and not
your private email address.
4. Since the semester mark, that consists of the mark for the 9 Assignments in this module,
contributes 80% of your final mark for the module, you will not be able to pass the module
unless you consistently submit the majority of these Assignments. You might also not be
able to submit the final portfolio unless your semester mark is satisfactory. The due dates
for Assignments are provided in section 8 of this Tutorial letter 101.
5. The portfolio has a subminimum of 50% - this means that to successfully complete this
module, you have to pass the portfolio. The due date for the portfolio is provided in section 8
of this Tutorial letter 101.

1.3 Don't know where to start?

Since this module is taught fully online, as soon as your registration for the module had been
finalised, you should have access to the website EUP1501-15-S1 on myUnisa. This website
(EUP1501-15-S1) is known as the master website for the module Ethical ICTs for Development
Solutions and is dedicated to supporting your learning.

Go to https://my.unisa.ac.za and login with your student number and password. Then you will
see EUP1501-15-S1in your row of modules, in the orange bar across the top of the webpage.

This master website will enable you to take full advantage of the following tools and features:
1. This site does NOT contain the usual Official Study Material feature. However, you should
find the PDF file for this tutorial 101 letter available in the Additional Resources tool. This
module does NOT have a study guide available. However, you should go to the Learning
Units by clicking on the tool in the left hand panel at the top of the website. This is where
your will be guided through studying for this module. Other documents provided for the
module could be available in the Additional Resources tool.

4
EUP1501/101

2. Since this module is taught fully online, there are no traditional paper Prescribed
Textbooks. For further information about this in particular and the module in general, see the
Module Overview in the Learning Units, as well as section 4 in this Tutorial letter 101.

3. This master website only contains the first batch of module materials and information
regarding the module. It does NOT contain the tools for the Schedule, Assignments,
Discussions and Blogs, as these are only available on your group site (EUP1501-15-S1-
xxxT).

Another tool that you will find on this master website:

Your Module Leader will use the Announcements tool to inform you about important
module-related issues. When she makes an Announcement, you will probably also
receive an email reminding you to check this website.

Other tools that you might find on the master and/or group websites:
The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and/or the Questions and Answers tools might
be made available.

The reason why the master website does not contain the tools for the Schedule, Assignments,
Discussions and Blogs, is that most assignments and your portfolio can only be completed
and/or submitted on your group site (EUP1501-15-S1-xxxT), as these need to be marked by
the Teaching Assistant allocated for that group of students.

These group sites should enable you to take full advantage of the following tools and features:
Go to the Discussions tool and you should find a Forum for each Learning Unit, as well
as a Topic for applicable Assignments within each of these. You could also communicate
with your Teaching Assistant here.
Go to the Schedule to check your official assignment due dates.

Other tools that you will find on these group websites:

You will need to submit Portfolio Sections A, B, C and D using the Assignments tool.
Your Teaching Assistant may use the Announcements tool to inform you about important
module-related issues. When (s)he makes an Announcement, you may also receive an
email reminding you to check the website.
You will complete Assignment 9 using the Blogs tool.

You are required to read and use the sources referred to on the master and group websites.
We recommend that you use the Internet in addition to do some background readings; for this,
the myUNISA master and group websites for this module are of fundamental value. All
students must therefore access both the master site EUP1501-15-S1, as well as their group
site EUP1501-15-S1-xxxT, on a regular basis - at least once a week.
Don't know where to start?

Go to Learning Units by clicking on the tool in the left hand panel at the top of each EUP1501-
15-S1 website. Start with the Module Overview and work through the different sections to
become familiar with what the module is about.

5
1.4 Physical Study Materials
The Department of Despatch at UNISA should supply you with the following physical study
materials:

For this module, you will only receive (this) Tutorial letter 101 in printed format. This Tutorial
letter 101 is also be available on myUNISA.

A so-called 'digiband' flash drive: These are computer flash drives that contain a simulation
'backup' of the myUNISA environment for the module, so that you don't have to be online all
the time to access your module materials. However, it should only be used when you cannot
work directly from myUNISA.

A CD/DVD pack, containing most of the module materials available online via myITLab.

A Microsoft Office 2013 CD.

These physical study materials are being mailed out to students as soon as possible.

The track and trace number for the package containing the physical study materials will be
available on the myUnisa website by following these links:
https://my.unisa.ac.za
My Admin
Parcel Tracking

If you did not receive the package containing the physical study materials, do NOT contact
your Teaching Assistant or the EUP1501 Module Team!

E-mail: despatch@unisa.ac.za

Subject: Student Number EUP1501 Physical study materials not received

If the package containing the physical study materials was not collected from the Post Office
and was returned to UNISA:

E-mail: despatch@unisa.ac.za

Subject: Student Number EUP1501 Physical study materials returned

UNISA will ONLY replace physical study materials if these were damaged or lost by the Post
Office

You have to submit an affidavit to confirm this along with your request for a re-issue.

UNISA will NOT replace physical study materials due to theft, water damage, fire,
displacement, loss or any circumstance outside the control of UNISA.

Please note that you are NOT dependent upon these physical study materials. Since all
study materials should be available online, either on your module websites on myUNISA
or on myITLab, DO NOT wait for these physical study materials to arrive before you start
working on the module.

6
EUP1501/101

These physical study materials will give you the chance to do some studying for this module
WITHOUT having to go onto the Internet. However, there are limits to what you can do with
these physical study materials:
Although you can read some instructions, you CANNOT complete any of the
assignments;
You CANNOT read the replies to the Discussions that your fellow students have
submitted;
You will NOT be able to read any additional announcements;
You will NOT be able to click on some of the links to other web sites; and
You will NOT see all of the changes that may need to be added to the content.

All students must therefore access both the master site EUP1501-15-S1, as well as their
group site EUP1501-15-S1-xxxT, on a regular basis - at least once a week - for the following:
Check for new Announcements: Your Module Leader will and your Teaching Assistant
may use the Announcements tool to inform you about important module-related issues.
When (s)he makes an Announcement, you may also receive an email reminding you to
check the website. You can also set up your myLife email account so that you receive the
Announcement as emails (on your cell phone).
Participate in Discussions: You should find a Forum for each Learning Unit, as well as a
Topic for applicable Assignments within each of these.
Work on online activities: In each Learning Unit, several activities are provided to guide
you through the learning material for the module. Don't skip these activities, as they could
help you to successfully complete the Assignments.
Submit your portfolio online: You will be required to submit sections A, B, C, and D of the
portfolio online, at the same time in one file. You MUST be online on myUNISA to submit
the portfolio for marking. You CANNOT send in any hand-written assignment and portfolio
for this module.

We are confident that this system could help you to succeed in this online module by giving you
extra ways to study the materials and practice with all of the activities and assignments. The
EUP1501 Module Team hopes that you will take full advantage of the facilities provided as part
of this module to make your studies more exciting. We trust that your 2015 studies will be
successful and that you will have lots of fun mastering the material in this module.

This is where we provide the details of assessment in this module.
The general purpose of assessment in this module is to determine whether your current level of
knowledge and performance (competence) accurately reflects the specific outcomes that the
module expects of you as a student.
Such assessment will:

enable you to compare your performance with the outcomes of the different learning units
and the module as a whole and

enhance your learning in order to meet these outcomes.

There are several reasons why assessment is conducted in this module:
1. To monitor your individual performance and check progress to provide you with student
support
2. To determine your learning needs by determining what you as a student might already know
and can do regarding the module requirements
3. To assess you as you complete this module at the end of the semester
Specific assessment contexts
The contexts within which your assessment will take place provides for the following aspects:

Your assessment will take place within an Open Distance Learning (ODL) context

The specific discipline involved is Computing

In terms of the learning programme in which the assessment takes place, the EUP1501
module currently forms part of around 99 different qualifications

In terms of the number of students involved in assessment, each assessment will be

conducted on an individual basis, but will in some instances occur within the context of a
small group of students, for instance when you take part in discussions with your fellow
students, reply to their answers and consider their replies to your answers

This module is offered at an undergraduate level

11
In most cases, the number of assessors involved in your assessment is one - you will be
assessed by the Teaching Assistant to whom you have been assigned.
