STUDENTS-TEACHER INTERACTION

ESTIMATED TIME: 7 minutes

PROCEDURE:

The teacher tells her students that they are going to watch a video. She asks them to
watch it carefully and pay attention to the verbs that appear at the bottom of the page together
with the words of the people who are part of the video. While they are watching the video, the
students have to write down in their notebooks all the verbs that they notice on the screen.
Students have to work in groups of five or six, and at the end of the video the leader of each
group, who is chosen by its members, read loudly the verbs they have found. While they are
reading their answers, the teacher writes on the blackboard their answers. After the teacher writes
down on the blackboard the verbs from each group without repeating the same verb twice, she
asks them if they know at what time are used those verbs. The students answer teacher`s
question. Then, the teacher writes on the blackboard the title of the lesson Past Simple of
Irregular Verbs and tells her students that they will learn about the verbs that do not have a
regular form for the past simple tense.

ACTIVITY 4: DEVELOPMENT/INTRODUCING THE NEW LESSON

AIDS: blackboard, notebooks, flipchart sheet, cards

CLASS MANAGEMENT: WHOLE CLASS, PAIR WORK, TEACHER STUDENTS

INTERACTION, STUDENTS TEACHER INTERACTION, STUDENT-STUDENT
INTERAACTION

ESTIMATED TIME: 13 minutes

PROCEDURE:

The teacher reminds her students that when they learnt about the past simple of regular verbs,
she mentioned that there are two categories of verbs in the past simple: one category which is
called regular verbs and another one called irregular verbs. The teacher writes on the
blackboard some of the most important irregular verbs like: be, come, do, drink, eat, give, go,
have, know, lose, make, read, say, see, sleep, speak, take, write. Students write these verbs in
their notebooks. Their teacher also mentions that at the end of their book, there is a list of the
irregular verbs which should be learnt by heart by them. In order to the students learn more
irregular verbs, the teacher tells them that they are going to play a game. She asks each student to
choose a card. She tells them that each card has written on it an irregular verb. While some of
them choose the first form of one irregular verb, the others choose the second form of one
irregular verb. One by one, they have to read loudly the verb that is written on their card and the
other students be very attentive and recognize if they have the pair of that verb. When the two
forms of the verbs are matched, the students come in front of the class and stick them on the
flipchart that their teacher has prepared for this activity. This process repeats until all the verbs
are matched and stuck on the flipchart sheet.

ACTIVITY 5: DEVELOPMENT

AIM: To answer to some questions by using Past Simple Tense in order to create a funny
story.

AIDS: Handout 1

CLASS MANAGEMENT: GROUP WORK, TEACHER-STUDENTS INTERACTION,

STUDENTS TEACHER INTERACTION, STUDENT-STUDENT INTERACTION

ESTIMATED TIME: 15 minutes

PROCEDURE:

The teacher tells students that they are going to write a story about one stormy night by
imagining answers to some questions. Each group receives a copy of the worksheet (Handout 1)
and they are asked to write their name at the top and fold the paper as indicated. The students
should hand their paper to the person on their right. The student on the right answers the first
question (Who was the man?) by inventing details and writing the answer in the space provided.
The student then folds the paper and passes the paper to the person on the right who answers the
next question and so on. The teacher makes sure the students fold the paper correctly. They
shouldn't be able to see what was written before. This continues until all the questions have been
completed. The teacher encourages the students to be as imaginative or as amusing as they like.
When the last question has been answered, the teacher asks the leader of each group to correct
the mistakes, if there are, and then reads the story to the other groups. After all the stories are
read, they have to choose which story was the best. The teacher has prepared three diplomas for
the stories (one for the first prize, one for the second, and one for the third).

ACTIVITY 6: FEEDBACK

AIDS: flipchart sheet, cards, notebooks

AIM: To distinguish a regular verb from an irregular one.

CLASS MANAGEMENT: WHOLE CLASS, TEACHER STUDENTS INTERACTION,

STUDENTS-TEACHER INTERACTION

ESTIMATED TIME: 10 minutes

PROCEDURE:

The teacher prepares a flipchart sheet with two headings: one with Regular verbs and one with
Irregular verbs, and cards which contains either a regular verb, or an irregular one in the
infinitive. The students are asked to choose a card and place it under the correct heading. After
all the students place the card they have chosen, the teacher appreciates the students` activity and
asks them to write on a paper something that they liked or did not like during the class. The
teacher grades the students who were very good during the lesson. The teacher tells her students
what is their homework for the next time (exercise 1, page 109, from the Language Booster).
