WHAT IS THE ETHICAL PROBLEM FOUND IN THE VIDEO?

The ethical problem that we can be found in the video which need to be considered is
the reptiles (crocodile) are being cruelly killed of demand for luxury fashion products. In a
horrifying undercover investigation has revealed that crocodiles are cut open alive for the skin
that can be used for $40,000 Birkin handbags and luxury $2,000 watch straps.

The crocodiles are being forced to live in dirty, dark pits before they are dragged out
by workers and placed on a table and killed. Their skins are made into the handbags and
watchstraps, which are known for having price tags in the thousands of dollars and are used
by western country celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham and Ashton
Kutcher.

At just three years old the crocodiles are 'harvested' before their skin is sent to Hermes
leather manufacturer. After they are shot in the head with a bolt gun, their necks are sawed
open, sometimes with a box cutter to divide the blood vessels.

Huge operation: the company Padenga operates one of the largest Nile crocodile farming
operations in the world in Kariba, Zimbabwe

Cruel: Animal charity PETA has exposed how the reptiles are put through unimaginable
suffering at a leather farm in Texas before they are brutally killed for fashion industry
giant Hermes

Torture: After they are shot in the head with a bolt gun their necks are sawed open,
sometimes with a box cutter, to sever the blood vessels

Popular brand: The Birkin handbags, made by Hermes from the skin of the crocodiles, are
a favorite for celebrities including Victoria Beckham
Horrifying: They are moving in ice bins alongside the carcass of the other dead crocodiles

Stacked up: Their skins are stored in a huge freezer before they are shipped off to leather
manufacturer across the United States or in France

Awful: Until the age of three, when they are harvested, they are kept in hurry conditions
with dirty water

Skin treatment: The tale of one of the dead crocodiles is surfaced of a blood-filled ice bin

Seller: Hermes is a fashion company based in Paris and is known for selling pricey luxury
goods

How the unethical action does relate to Milton Friedmans point of view?

1. The deviation from a profit-only focus does not mean that profit will fall-in-fact,
the profit might rise.
a. Directors cannot act in any way to increase profits and that corporations should
engage in socially responsible activities as it can be shown that they at least
have an indirect positive effect on organizational performance
2. Profit is now recognized as an incomplete measure of corporate performance,
and therefore an inaccurate measure for resource allocation.
a. Directors as agents of the business have to play within the rules of the game,
this still leaves room for unethical behavior
3. Friedman explicitly expected that performance would be within the law and
ethical custom
a. Companies to be truly ethical, they should engage in a reasonable level of
socially responsible activities as this maximizes the wealth of all stakeholders.

WHAT ARE THE MORAL VALUES RELATE TO THE VIDEO?

Bad Moral Values

1. Ignoring moral sensitivity towards animals

The action taken by the crocodile farm is an example of ignoring moral sensitivity
toward animals. Human beings interact with non-human animals in a variety of ways.
Some animals, like dogs, cats, and hamsters, live in our homes under our care. Others,
like mice, often live in our homes as unwelcome residents. Still others, like cows, pigs,
and chickens, are bred for human consumption of their flesh, milk, or eggs. Other
animals are being treated as an experiment by humans in laboratories, hunted by
humans for sport, or used for entertainment purposes in circuses, zoos, and films.
Some people believe that all of these interactions are morally problematic, while
others believe that all of them are morally permissible (meaning not wrong). In this
case, the crocodiles are being killed just to fulfill the selfish people wants for demand
of luxury products. Animals also have the equal rights same as human beings. As
human who are blessed with six sense need to be aware on the matter of animal moral
sensitivity. Public expectations for business behavior on moral sensitivity is important
because its promote business responsibility for the social good and public interest
without brings any harm to animals.

2. Employees safety

Good Moral Values

1. The maintain of hygienic standard
From the video, we also discovered some good moral value instead of not only
focusing on bad moral values. The good moral value that we can be taken as an
example is the maintenance of hygienic standard. The workers in the crocodile farm
were done the process of slaughter in a hygiene manner. As we has seen in the video,
when the slaughtering process, the blood is drained away into separate pit and not
allowed to drain into the waste water. Skinning treatment is carried out in a separate
room from the slaughtering place. The skin is frozen in a sufficient freezing capacity
to assure correct freezing.

POSSIBLE WAYS TO OVERCOME THE ETHICAL PROBLEM

1. Action that can be taken by crocodile farming industry

The following are methods that should be considered to apply to crocodilians in zoos
and farms.
Captive bolt pistol (penetrating or non-penetrating) : This is the preferred
method, alone or with a subsequent method to ensure death (e.g. pitching
or double pitching) if the brain is not immediately destroyed. Picture
below shows the correct location to place bolt to maximize brain destruction.

2. Action that can be taken by law

There are few laws to protect reptiles from abuse, and those that do exist are often not
enforced. For example, although animals such as anacondas and crocodiles are
covered by Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES)
regulations, it is estimated that for every animal who is legally killed for the exotic
skins trade, another will be illegally poached. Any illegally hunt, catch, kill or trade
in precious and rare wild animals which are banned under Government regulations
shall be subject to a maximum fine. The farm fails to relocate crocodiles from
crowded pens; the controller should revoke his entire keeping and operation license.

3. Action that can be taken by public

The trade in live animals represents depleted wild populations, damaged habitats and
the suffering of countless animals. Do not be tempted to contribute to demand by
purchasing a wild creature that is being sold. There are many alternatives to leather;
including cotton, linen, rubber, ramie, canvas, and synthetics these alternatives can be
found just about anywhere you might shop. But some places, such as discount shoe
and variety stores, offer larger selections. Offer an array of non-leather handbags,
wallets, and shoes. People may go for these alternatives in the market and before
buying items made out of exotic skins like these, please stop and think of the animals
they come from and their intense suffering. Dont support this cruelty with your
purchases.
