Internet can be your friend..


BUT NOT EVERYTHING ON THE INTERNET IS CORRECT OR
TRUSTWORTHY!

Find credible sources/information


Published materials (books, magazines, newspaper, articles)
Author information and references listed? (where is the info coming
from?)
Check the website info at the very bottom of the website or in About Us
section
Read more than one source related to the topic and cross-check

Ways to Paraphrase

1) Change the words (use synonyms)


2) Change the content order in the sentence
(Try to keep the main focus though)
3) Take out unnecessary sections or add more info
(Dont make it too short or too long though!)

** DONT CHANGE THE MEANING OF THE SENTENCE!!


Paraphrasing Examples
For a long time, I wanted to travel to China to learn
Mandarin
I wanted to go to China to study/acquire/master Chinese for a
considerable amount of time.

The lecture was given by a teacher who teaches Computer


Engineering at a well-known university.
The talk was given by a professor in the Computer Engineering
department of a famous university.

The professor in the Computer Engineering department of a


famous university gave the talk.
The focus changes to professor
General Advice for Summarizing/Paraphrasing

1) Read and understand the whole idea


2) Be selective. Take notes of the main/key ideas and
words/phrases while reading
3) Say it in your own words (You are telling a person who
doesnt know about this)
4) Look away from the source and then say/write

** Thesaurus/Dictionary are your friend!!

** DONT CHANGE THE MEANING OF THE SENTENCE!!

Often summarizing + paraphrasing
Use the key words/phrases in the notes you took to
create your own sentences
Keep the main focus

Who is our audience?


Must be suitable for our audience
Do not make it too difficult
Collecting info + Writing the Article
1) Collect the info from different sources (you might need
to find additional sources)
2) Copy and paste information from different sources
that you want to use in one place. Then, put each
source information right under the copied sections
3) Take notes of key words/phrase/sentences you want
to use
4) Summarize and paraphrase to write your own article
5) Make sure you are answering the questions on the
questions list!!!
6) Be sure to organize the information in your writing!
