Critical Task Milestone Two: Numbers and Operations

Lesson Plan Descriptors
Component
Context Student will be able to represent addition and subtraction with
objects, fingers, or drawings. Students will be able to act out or
express verbally the addition or subtraction equation.
This will be the beginning of the lesson.
Students will solve word problems using objects fingers or
drawings to give the sum or difference of the problems.
Title and Grade Numbers and Operations
Kindergarten
Length 30-45 minutes daily
Relevant Standards K.3 Number and operations. The student applies mathematical
process standards to develop an understanding of addition and
subtraction situations in order to solve problems.
K.3A. model the action of joining to represent addition and the
action of separating to represent subtraction
(Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Kindergarten, 2016,
p. 9)
Learner Outcomes Students will be to demonstrate addition and subtraction in
multiple ways.
Students will be able to add and subtract physical items through
different activities, through group discussions, as well as
observation.
Assessment Student will work on Apple Addition worksheet. (Summative
Assessment)
Students will work on Subtraction worksheet. (Summative
Assessment)
Students will create and illustrate their own equations and
exchange with classmates. (partner) Formative assessment

Anticipatory Set Create a KWL chart in whole group about what students already
know about Addition and Subtraction. Discuss what they would
like to learn.
Read Adding and Subtracting at the Lake by Amy Rauen.
Discuss what they have learned from reading the story.
Teacher will say I have three cars. How many do I have if I take
one away?
Students will watch subtraction lesson video from YouTube.
Procedures Have students work on Moose Math on their tablets/ computers.
Have students write the equations they used on the app into their
math journals
During whole group have students share the different addition
and subtraction problems they came across on the Moose Math
App.
How many ways is there to make ten using your new addition
skills?
What happens when you subtract one number from itself?
Example 5-5=0
Can you use addition and subtraction in your everyday life?
Closure Exit Ticket: Students will create their own addition and
subtraction problem and illustrate how they solved it.
Modifications and/or Teacher will monitor students during class discussion and group
Accommodations work.
Have students working on the worksheet to verbalize and show
me with their hands to show how they solve the equation.
Give students math manipulatives to help solve worksheets as
well as on the Moose Math Application.
